JOHN SILVER’S RELATIVE?

By Sheena Archer

Read mor e of th is story in my edito rial on page 6 In 2007 I r esearched the fa mi ly of John Si lver, whose grave i s i n St. Leonard’ s C hurc hyar d, fi ndi ng, not su rp ri si ngly, that he was a resid en t of Sherfi eld w ith a wi fe and fami ly, rather than a fi ctional pirate!. I publi shed the results i n the Lo ddon Valley Li nk i n Octo ber of that year. In Marc h thi s year, 2009, Basi ngstoke G azette repor ter Richard Garfi eld, repeated the s to ry i n the Gazette of Monday 30 th Marc h 2009, after whi ch I recei ved an i nteres ti ng emai l fro m a rea der of the G azette, w ho may w ell be a descendan t of th e real Jo hn Si lv er. He included another i nter es ting sto ry w hi ch I wi ll k eep fo r ano ther day!

Kay Pearman, w ho s ti ll r esi des in the new bungalow w hich replace d the “Sunnysi de” thatched co ttage, tells me tha t Barry S ilver w as a cousi n of he r hus band, w hose Mo ther, th e Gran dmothe r to whom Barry refers, liv ed at “Sunnysi de ”, on the Vi llage Gr een at Sherfi eld.

. NWR met recently to play the game ‘ Chronology’. T he object of th e game is to collec t ten car ds, eac h depic ti ng an ev en t i n his tory, i n the ri gh t c hronologi cal ord er. We div ided in to tw o teams to make i t mor e fun. To s tar t wi th, it is fairly easy to do, but as you collect more cards i t beco mes muc h har de r to slo t the m in to the right order. I t i s qui te co mmon to find that events happened much sooner than you w ould ex pect. For example, John Gabel i ntro duce d the first jukebox i n 1906 and the fi rs t traffic li ghts i n Bri tain were i nstalled a t Piccadilly Ci rcus i n 1926. O the r topics tax ed ou r hi s to ri cal knowledg e, for exa mple, the year the fi rs t per manent Englis h settlemen t i n North America, Ja me stow n, was foun de d (1607). Anothe r was w hen the Engli sh acquired New York and N ew Jersey by treaty fro m th e Du tch (1667). O n th e o ther han d, we clearly reme mber ed the year of the G reat Trai n Ro bb ery (1963), the year cons truction of the Mi llenni um Dome star ted (1997) and when gy mna st O lga Korbut w on th ree Olympi c medal s (1972). It may sound a bi t dull, bu t even the sceptics thoroug hly enjoyed i t and were keen to have another roun d! Our nex t meeting w ill be a music ev ening w hen we each sel ec t some pi eces of music which means some thi ng to u s or re mi nds us of an event. We also plan to do a ramble along theBasings toke Canal – in keepi ng wi th our theme this year of the In du stri al Revolution!
