Jimmy Buffett Concert August 29th, 2009 Alpine Valley, Wi Summerzcool Tour
It was a frigid evening at Alpine Valley that night. I’m referring to the temperature of course! As I walked through the parking lot, I saw the typical things that happen at the intersection of Sodom and Gomorra. Check out the pictures at www.shakerofsalt.blogspot.com After the parking lot tour, found my seat which was in the third row, but off to the far side of stage left. I was close but so far away. For some reason, the security staff would catch any beach balls that landed on or near the stage and poke a hole to deflate them and ensure it could not be reused. I have no idea why this was being done, but the staff seemed to take pleasure in destroying these innocent balls. After about 30 minutes of this activity, someone in a position of authority talked to each of the staff members individually and the destruction of the beach balls ceased. The concert opened with Louie Louie and Hot, Hot, Hot which really wound up the crowd. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOwp5DhMIr8
From my seat, I could see John Lovell pretty clear but Jimmy was far away. The worst part was that Tina was on stage right and out of my view. I did see her clearly on the projection screen that was off to my right. And yes………..Tina looked great!!!!! 1
Lage Nom Ai This is a great song to open with. The band was ready to do another great show even though the weather was cold and rainy. John Lovell’s trumpet sounded great.
2
Coconut Telegraph It was great that Jimmy brought this one to Alpine Valley. I have never seen this song performed live at Alpine. Jimmy made numerous references to Wisconsin throughout the song.
3
Summerzcool Jimmy brought out Glenn Worf as the special guest bass player. Glenn played bass on many tracks from the Take the Weather with You album and, Wisconsin native. This is a great song. Peter Mayer’s guitar work was excellent.
4
It’s 5 O’Clock Somewhere Mac was doing the introduction to this song and Jimmy had one of the beach balls in his hand and showed it to Mac. I don’t know what was written on the ball, but Mac actually stopped in the middle of the introduction to read it. He laughed and then continued the intro. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOwp5DhMIr8
5
Manana Jimmy made a reference to Star Trek right before this song started. I haven’t heard Jimmy make a Star Trek reference since the San Diego concert on Sept 4th 1975 at the Back Door. (except during Boat Drinks) Great song. Great performance.
6
Conky Tonkin’ Nadirah’s vocals on this song were fantastic. It was great duet with Jimmy.
7
Changes in Latitude Good performance, great video of the parties in the parking lot on the screen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUEQtYCOZME
8
Volcano Who is Ilo Ferreira? And why is he touring with Jimmy? Is this the best the Caribbean has to offer? Bring back the Juke Joint Duo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UoA0oDYu728 http://mog.com/jameson/blog/1335144 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BX2QoL43lLU
9
Cheeseburger in Paradise Peter really shined on this one. His guitar performance was outstanding. I was surprised that this song was in the first half of the show.
10
Come Monday Beach band configuration. Jimmy really sounded good on this one. Again surprised this song is in the first half of the show.
11
Son of a Son of a Sailor An outstanding live performance. Nadirah once again belted out some great vocals. The video shown was Jimmy back in the old days on one of his boats. At the end, there was some footage of Ted Kennedy on his boat. At the end of this song Jimmy mentioned that this song was for Teddy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=207PqB-Y80Q
12
Brown Eyed Girl Once again the Alpine Valley crowd displayed their love of Jimmy’s version of this song. Even though it was 55 degrees and raining, the crowd rocked along with the band. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhRDjiA5zA8
13
One Particular Harbor Once again the band and Jimmy performed an outstanding live version of this song.
14
A Lot to Drink About I was surprised that there were a lot of people singing along and actually knew the Lyrics for a new song that only has been released on iTunes and Margaritvaille.com. It’s a shame that Why Don’t We Get Drunk was mixed in with this song. It’s time to retire this one from the set list. Intermission: One Love Video with Jimmy and a bunch of other artists I’ve never seen before One Love Jimmy and some of the band came out to do an acoustical version of this song. Good performance. Jimmy on the ukulele. Robert G’s pans really stood out.
NOTE: Jimmy & the band came out for the second half wearing jackets. 15
My Head Hurts, My Feet Stink & I Don’t Love Jesus I never liked this song. I still don’t.
16
Frank and Lola It’s great that Jimmy brought this one back. A great performance by John Lovell on the trumpet.
17
Grapefruit Jucyfruit Great live performance of this song. The band was really in sync for this one.
18
I Feel Like Goin’ Surfin’ in a Hurricane Jimmy mentions Sheboygan, Wi in the song and there is a reference to Sheboygan in the video. Jimmy does visit Sheboygan every time he performs at Alpine. I think that it would have been a nice touch to have the members of the band The Ventures as special guest guitarists on this song. http://www.theventures.com/index.php?pg=rock_n_roll_hall_of_fame_induction http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBk_6qrDTmk
19
Let Me Love You (Ilo Ferreira) Total waste of time
20
Gypsies in the Palace One of the best live performances of this song I have seen to date. John Lovell (aka Johnny Martini) was doing a dance during this song. Johnny can move!!!
21
Last Mango in Paris Once again, one of the best live performances I have heard and seen to date. Mike’s performance was outstanding. Nice picture of Jimmy and Captain Tony on the screen at the end of the song.
22
Southern Cross Jimmy mentions that he hears a fog horn. What he was hearing was some guy blowing into a queen conch shell every 5 minutes. It was funny the first two times. After that, it became very annoying. This person with the shell was standing about 20 feet from me. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conch This song is another Alpine Valley favorite. The crowd rocked during this one.
23
A Pirate Looks At 40 Jimmy performs this one solo. Very nice performance. Just Jimmy and his guitar. I always enjoy Jimmy doing an acoustical of his songs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ndmYI-ExC2c
24
Margaritaville Jimmy makes a reference to Minnesota during the song which drew a number of boos from the crowd. I believe this is because of Brett Farve signing with the Vikings earlier in the week. Other than that, the crowd was in sync with the banc for the Nationa Anthem of Margaritaville. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDNuhSdP9QA Ilo and Glenn Worf were on stage for this one. Jimmy mentioned that this song will have two bass players.
25
Fins Good performance. The band and crowd were rocking during this song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V6MZDYo4yR0
First Encore 26
We Are the People Our Parents Warned Us About Another great live performance. Again the band and crowd were rocking with this one.
27
Yellow Submarine Although I love the Beatles, I do not care for any other bands doing their songs. John Lovell was again dancing during this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wppXmmNd3I&feature=related
28
Growing Older But Not Up Jimmy really shined on this one. A great song with just Jimmy and his guitar. I always look forward to this part of the concert where Jimmy does an acoustical version of one of his songs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_BfYxRb_Hs

Low Point
The guy in the crowd blowing the conch shell for 45 minutes The lady seated behind me screaming during the first half of the concert. The guy next to the screaming lady in the seat behind me, trying to talk to his friend Scott on the cell phone.
