MODE Thank you for visiting MODE. As you may know, the fashion industry is always changing. It is important for the retail and fashion industry to be continuously changing in order to keep up with consumer demands. This museum is focused on the most influential designers of the 21st century, and how they have changed the face of fashion as well as the retail industry. Christopher Bailey, the current Burberry creative QuickTimeª and a decompressor director, has been on the fashion forefront for years needed to see this picture. now. Discovered by Donna Karan while he was still a student at the Royal College of Art in London, Bailey has learned the art of fashion from distinguished designers such as Tom Ford at Gucci. Bailey joined Burberry in May 2001, and has since transformed the 150 year old company into a luxury goods brand. The Burberry plaid that has become so iconic appeals to both old and new generations. With the ability to transform an ordinary raincoat into a sought after fashion item, Bailey has made it clear to the industry that he is here to stay. His laid-back demeanor and natural creative instinct has made him one of the 21st century’s designers of excellence.

Manolo Blahnik History: Anyone who has ever seen an episode of the highly popular television series, Sex and the City, has heard of the shoe designer Manolo Blahnik. In one classic scene Carrie Bradshaw is faced with a mugger in which she says, “Please sir, you can take my Fendi baguette, you can take my ring and my watch, but don’t take my Manolo Blahniks”. This set the tone for the designers impact on 21st century fashion. Born in 1942 in the Canary Islands, this Spanish fashion designer has become one of the most recognized luxury shoe designers in the industry. Blahnik is one of the only shoe designers who personally hand finishes his Beechwood heels. With such a significant attention to detail, it is no wonder that he has become not only a household name, but also a go to designer of the stars. Domenico Dolce & Stefano Gabbana (Dolce and Gabbana) History:

Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana began working together in 1982. In 1985 they got their big break when Milano Collezioni invited them to partake in a “new talent” fashion show. One year later in 1986, they launched their first women’s ready to wear line that was an instant success among fashionistas. Dolce and Gabbana have recently even opened up a restaurant called Gold on 7

Via Poerio in Milan. The entire interior of this restaurant is gold colored which emphasizes the designer’s luxury style. Their provocative advertising campaigns and love of risk taking has given them alluring, edgy collections that will continue to impact the 21st fashion industry.

History:

Kawakubo is a Japanese designer who founded the company Commes Des Garcons, meaning ‘like some boys’, in 3. While Rei did not attend fashion ool or have any special training, she did y art at Keio University in Tokyo. After ool she went on to open boutiques in o and Paris. When she finally began presenting her lines and designs in s, they were a hit. Rei’s style reflected a stylish, unfinished, asymmetrical look opened new doors into how fashion d be perceived. Karl Lagerfeld (Chanel) History:

Karl Lagerfeld was born in Germany in 1938. He has held numerous notable positions in the fashion industry, but he is most recognized for his role as the head Chanel designer. Lagerfeld also began his own collections around the time he joined Chanel in 1983. The press photos for his own collections were often shot by himself being that he is an avid photographer and has an instinctive creative edge. Karl has the ability to create updated versions of the classic Chanel pieces that Coco Chanel would be proud of. Lagerfeld embodies the elegance he creates in his designs. Ralph Lauren History: Ralph Lauren grew up in the Bronx in New York. He began his career as a salesperson selling clothing for Brooks Brothers. Isaac Mizrahi attended the Parsons School of Design where he was able to land his first industry job at Perry Ellis. It wasn’t until 1987 that Mizrahi started his own women’s ready to wear clothing line. From then on, Mizrahi went on to be successful in many areas in the fashion industry including being one of the first designers to create a line especially for an off-price retailer, Target. His line at Target brings affordable luxury to every woman. He believes everyone should be able to experience what he loves, which is fashion at every cost level. This has made him a pioneer in the luxury fashion industry and has made him a distinguished designer of the 21st century. Stefano Pilati (Yves Saint Laurent) History: The death of Yves Saint Laurent sent shock waves through the fashion community in June, 2008. With his passing however, the established brand he created was put into the hands of Stefano Pilati who has shown he is able to take on the brand and bring it into the future. Pilati began his career as creative director at Yves Saint Laurent in 2004. His clothes embody the style exhibited by the late Yves Saint Laurent, yet he is able to modernize the look to be continuously moving forward into the future. Pilati said in an interview with V Magazine, “Beauty and elegance can be very positive forces if you embrace them in the right way. Fashion makes me feel alive and linked to the moment, because it is always evolving”. He is always moving forward and this is why is a designer who has achieved excellence in the 21st century. General Information Location: This museum is located in New York City, which is one of the fashion capitals. It is located on 7th Avenue, which is also called Fashion Avenue. This location has special meaning in that it was the birthplace of American fashion and design. From the 1920’s, designers flocked to New York City to establish careers in the fashion industry. There would be maximum exposure at this location because New York City has an extensive amount of foot traffic and would be located in an area that contains mass amounts of people in the retail and fashion industry.
