welcome from the superintendent

district phone numbers

Dear Lindbergh School District Residents: The support of our community is one of the most important factors when it comes to making sure that quality education is maintained for all students. As we enter our 60th year of serving the community, I am proud to say we have ample evidence once again to demonstrate a high level of achievement in all of our schools: • Crestwood and Truman elementary schools were awarded the coveted Gold Star Schools recognition by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, for outstanding student achievement. • All of our schools, from elementary to high school, scored in the top 10 rankings for the highest test scores in the state. • Long Elementary was recognized as a State School of Character and then won this title on the national level. • Lindbergh School District was last year’s National District of Character, representing the entire country. At Lindbergh Schools, we look at the total child. Great test scores are important, but so are fine arts, athletics, involvement and character. Our programs address all these areas of development and more, to ensure that students have a well-rounded education. We’re also putting on our construction hats as we continue to grow. Over the next three years, we will continue rebuilding the dated facilities in our district, thanks to patron support for the Prop R 2006 and 2008 bond issues. We pledge to you, our neighbors, to stretch our dollars to provide a school district that has not only high achievement, but also modern, state-of-the-art facilities. Lindbergh Schools has been delivering outstanding education to students since 1949, and even in times of recession and change, you can rely on us to always strive to meet our mission. Former students are now parents of new students, and the cycle continues. We are the partnership that makes our community unique and one that is a magnet to many seeking a quality lifestyle. Thank you for your support – we look forward to the new school year.

2009-10 Lindbergh School District Directory

LINDBERGH HISTORY Lindbergh School District encompasses approximately 28 square miles in the southwestern portion of St. Louis County, Missouri, and serves a community of approximately 46,000 residents. Lindbergh is a well-established residential, suburban community with a diverse economic base made up of large retailers, shopping centers, restaurants and service providers.

The district currently has one early childhood center, five elementary schools, one middle school and one high school that serve approximately 5,600 students, a number that has remained stable for several years. More than 400 dedicated teachers, 75 percent of whom have advanced degrees, are employed throughout the District and an additional 300 administrators, support, mainte-

nance and security personnel complete the staff. At Lindbergh, the focus on excellence in education extends beyond academics, to embrace social and moral development in athletics, extra-curricular activities and nationally recognized character education programs.

LINDBERGH’S OASIS TUTORS Lindbergh School District’s OASIS program will enter its 20th year in 2010. The OASIS tutoring program pairs older adults with individual students (K-4) at one of Lindbergh’s five

elementary schools. The tutors meet one-on-one with their student for one hour a week during school. Tutors help students advance reading and writing skills.

Tutors don’t have to have a background in teaching, just a love for children. To learn more, contact Laura Iannazzo, at 314-729-2400, ext. 3689.

SENIOR ASSOCIATES LUNCHEONS Senior citizens in the Lindbergh School District are invited to participate in the “Senior Associates Luncheon” program, held on the first Wednesday of the month, October through May. Residents of the district, age 60 and older, are eligible to attend. Senior Associates Luncheons

include a delicious meal, musical performances by Lindbergh students, guest speakers, attendance prizes and more! Each program begins at 9:30 a.m. and ends by 11 a.m. The cost is $4.50. Luncheons are held in the cafeteria at Truman Elementary School.

Seniors may also sign up for a Senior Associates Gold Card for free admission to school sponsored events including concerts, plays, dress rehearsals and athletic events. For more information, call 314-729-2400, ext. 8775.

Beats us. The fact is, two-thirds of all U.S. college students change their major before they graduate. That’s why it makes sense to start your college career at St. Louis Community College. At STLCC, you can try out a variety of classes within our general education program. When you’re ready to move on and earn that four-year degree in… whatever…you can easily transfer your credits. And, you will have paid nearly 70% less for those credits compared to a public four-year university.

Find yourself at STLCC-Meramec.

Kids, Sports and Contact Lenses Question:

Carrie Gaines, O.D.

My nine-year-old plays sports year round. Wearing glasses is really inconvenient. They slip, get smudged and sometimes get knocked off. At what age can a child wear contact lenses or are there other options?

Answer:

Board Certified Optometrist

Richard Wieder, M.D.

Board Certified Ophthalmologist

For kids, ages 8 and up. involved in competitive sports, dance or theater, soft daily disposable lenses are a great solution when glasses get in the way. There is no need to clean and disinfect the contact lenses since they are worn for one day and discarded. Because the contact lenses are always new, they are very comfortable. Not only are daily disposable contact lenses easy to use, they are regarded as the safest type of contact lens available. There is no cost for contact lens solutions, so they are very affordable. Daily disposable contact lenses are a good alternative to glasses, when needed. They can increase a child’s confidence, leading to better performance on the field or on the stage. If your child is not ready for contact lenses, another popular option is prescription sports goggles. Summer is a great time to begin contact lens wear before practice begins and school resumes. We specialize in fitting children, tweens and teens for contact lenses. Call us today for a consultation.
