welcome from the superintendent Dear Residents of the Affton School District: Welcome to the 2009-10 school year. We hope this directory contains information that you find useful as you learn about the district. The Affton School District has long had a reputation, in Missouri, as an outstanding institution providing a great education to its children, in a community that supports its school very well. The Affton School District has continued this legacy by performing very well academically over the last few years. The district was recently Accredited with Distinction for the 2008-09 based on student performance for the 200708 school year. We have been awarded Distinction six out of the last eight years and this is due to our great teaching staff and our students.

The first high school classes in Affton were offered in 1930, and were housed in the basement of the former McKenzie School, that now serves as the Administrative Offices of the district at 8701 Mackenzie Road. The first section of the original Affton Senior High School building, which was later named W.F. Gaunt High School, was constructed in 1936 at 8520 Mackenzie Road, and the first class to graduate from the new high school was in 1937. The current high school building was built in 1955. A classroom and cafeteria addition was added in 1958. Ninth grade students temporarily moved to

McKenzie School in the fall of 1958, back to the senior high in April 1959, and into a new ninth grade center at Gaunt School, after an addition was finished in 1961. The terra cotta cougar and bronze school seal, both located in the high school lobby, were donated by the classes of 1961 and 1962, respectively. An addition was completed in 1963, and in 1965 a bond issue was passed to provide the high school with an auditorium, pool, library and more classrooms. The “pod” area of the high school was added in 1969. Ninth grade students moved back to the high school after Gaunt was closed in 1978.

Prior to the start of the 2002-03 school year, new science labs were added to science classrooms. In addition, business computer labs, FACS classrooms, science classrooms, and administrative offices were upgraded. This work was made possible by the passing of Proposition A in 2000. A new student commons addition was built on to the existing cafeterias and opened for the 2003-04 school year. The commons addition was made possible by the generous donation made by Affton High School alums Bill (Class of 63’) and Nancy (Class of 65’) Thompson. Also, a new athletic complex with a new football field, bleachers, all-weather track, and lights was opened at the start of the 2003-04 school year.

Eighth grade students wishing to receive a diploma went to the County Court House in Clayton to take four days of exams. The first eighth grade class to graduate from Affton took place in 1922. In 1942, a junior high school was organized for grades seven and eight, and classes were held with the senior high school students at the original school (Gaunt School). When the new high school was completed, Gaunt was used for grades seven and eight only.
Land at 7550 Mackenzie Road was purchased in 1957 for a new junior high school, and in 1959 a bond issue was passed to build Mackenzie Junior High School. Sixth grade students attended the elementary schools until being moved to Heege School, built in 1931 at the corner of Mackenzie and Heege Roads, but after the building was closed in 1976 the students went to Mesnier Intermediate School, before joining MacKenzie Junior High School. The school became known as Mackenzie Middle School in the fall of 1987, and was later renamed for Merrill J. Rogers, assistant principal

In 1995, an addition consisting of four classrooms and a state-of-the-art library was built to the front of the building, the cafeteria was expanded, and an elevator was added. During the 2006-07 school year, the building was air conditioned, and five new classrooms were added. The modular classrooms, added to ease overcrowding were removed and an outdoor physical education area was built in that area. Improvements were also made to the athletic fields.

School History: Gotsch School was opened to elementary students in the fall of 1968 after a 1966 bond issue allowed for its construction. Through the years, Affton students in third, fourth and fifth grades have attended McKenzie School, Heege School, Reavis School (of which Mr. Richard Gotsch was principal), and Mesnier School. During a reorganization of schools in
1975, Gotsch became the Gotsch Early Childhood Center and housed the Early Childhood Education and kindergarten programs. In the fall of 1984, fourth and fifth grade students began attending Gotsch School, with kindergartners going to Mesnier and preschool children going to the Affton-Lindbergh ECE Program. Affton’s third grade classes also now attend
Gotsch. The school building was unique when it was built because it consists of three sections each with four standard classrooms and a resource center, plus a 47- by 8-foot ceramic tile mural, featuring elementary children’s drawings, covering an entire wall in the cafeteria.

School History: Charles J. Mesnier Elementary School opened in the fall of 1958 with 22 classrooms. Charles Mesnier was superintendent of the Affton School District for 37 years before retiring in 1970. Each classroom at the new school had its own sink and work area, thermostat and skylights. There were special rooms for reme-
dial reading and speech therapy and an allpurpose room for use as an auditorium or gymnasium. A kindergarten classroom was added in 1962. Mesnier School served elementary students of all ages until the district’s reorganization into “grade centers” in 1975 called for Mesnier to house fourth and fifth grades. Reavis School, which served first through
third grades, was then closed in 1982 and those students transferred to Mesnier. In the fall of 1984, Mesnier became a primary school, serving students in kindergarten through third grade. In the Fall of 2008, all third grades transferred to Gotsch; Mesnier serves K-2 only.

ECE PROGRAMS AT MESNIER AND GOTSCH Before- and after-school childcare takes place at Mesnier and Gotsch. The tuition-based program is offered from 6:30 a.m. to the start of school, and after school until 6 p.m. Parents choose to have children attend from two to five days per week, before
school, after school or both. Children can choose from a variety of indoor and outdoor activities. Call each building for rates and more information.
PARENTS AS TEACHERS (PAT) A parent is a child’s first and most important teacher. The home is a child’s first schoolhouse. Children will learn more during the early years than at any other time. How children grow and learn during these years – beginning at birth – will affect their later knowledge. Parents As Teachers (PAT) is a voluntary family education and support program that provides practical, effective help for families with children prenatal to pre-kindergarten at no cost to families who reside in the Affton School District.
Parents As Teachers offers: •Information and guidance, before the baby is born, to help prepare for the important job of parenthood. •Personal visits by certified child development specialists until kindergarten age. •Group meetings with other parents to gain insights, share experiences, and discuss topics of interest. •Information on what to look for and expect as a child grows and develops. •Periodic checkups of the child’s development and health, hearing and vision.

“Distinction in performance” The Affton School District has earned the state’s “Distinction in Performance” award for their academic achievement and progress six of the last eight years including the 2008-09 school year. The award is presented annually by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. The Distinction in Performance award is based on the 14 academic performance standards that are used in the accreditation of K-12 school districts. To qualify for the award, K-12 districts had to
meet 13 out of 14 performance standards, including all of the MAP-based measures. The criteria were modified in 2006 to reflect changes in the state’s MAP testing program. A standard also was added to provide a measure of “adequate yearly progress,” which is one of the requirements of the federal No Child Left Behind act. The Distinction in Performance award provides an annual confirmation and recognition of a district’s consistent performance.

AFFTON DISTRICT CELEBRATING 150 YEARS A Pictorial History From its start in a one-room, native-stone schoolhouse, the Affton School District has grown into one of the most successful districts in the state, recognized for Distinction in Performance three consecutive years. To mark its 150th anniversary of education and service, the district published a pictorial history which traces the district’s proud history from the mid 1800s to the present. Only 1000 copies of these commemorative, collector books were printed. The 144-page book tells the story of Affton School District and the community which supports it through pictures. Many of the photos and memorabilia were donated to the district from private collections and have never been viewed by the public. The price of the book is $31.95. Please include $5.00 for shipping and handling if not picked up locally.

Beats us. The fact is, two-thirds of all U.S. college students change their major before they graduate. That’s why it makes sense to start your college career at St. Louis Community College. At STLCC, you can try out a variety of classes within our general education program. When you’re ready to move on and earn that four-year degree in… whatever…you can easily transfer your credits. And, you will have paid nearly 70% less for those credits compared to a public four-year university.

Kids, Sports and Contact Lenses Question:
Carrie Gaines, O.D.
My nine-year-old plays sports year round. Wearing glasses is really inconvenient. They slip, get smudged and sometimes get knocked off. At what age can a child wear contact lenses or are there other options?
Answer:
Board Certified Optometrist
Richard Wieder, M.D.
Board Certified Ophthalmologist

For kids, ages 8 and up. involved in competitive sports, dance or theater, soft daily disposable lenses are a great solution when glasses get in the way. There is no need to clean and disinfect the contact lenses since they are worn for one day and discarded. Because the contact lenses are always new, they are very comfortable. Not only are daily disposable contact lenses easy to use, they are regarded as the safest type of contact lens available. There is no cost for contact lens solutions, so they are very affordable. Daily disposable contact lenses are a good alternative to glasses, when needed. They can increase a child’s confidence, leading to better performance on the field or on the stage. If your child is not ready for contact lenses, another popular option is prescription sports goggles. Summer is a great time to begin contact lens wear before practice begins and school resumes. We specialize in fitting children, tweens and teens for contact lenses. Call us today for a consultation.
