PART OF FLOWER Objectives 1. Identify and explain the parts of a flower and their role in the life cycle of flowering plants, including pollination, seed dispersal and germination. 2. Explore more about function of flowers and their live cycle. 3. Describe each part of flowers. 4. Read and understand every each sentences. Teaching activities Introduction Recap on the following knowledge: that plants need light, warmth and water to grow well; that plants need healthy leaves, roots and stems in order to grow well; that a number of plants need to be used in investigations to provide reliable evidence. Tell the children they are going to label and dissect a flower in an online activity. Activity Explain that reproduction is a process that all living things do. Reproduction of flowering plants is made possible through the processes of pollination, seed production, seed dispersal and germination. If possible, present this in the context of a story of the life of a flower. On an interactive whiteboard, open the Life cycles online activity. Briefly talk through the key points and functions of the Petal, Sepal, Nectary, Style, Stigma, Ovary, Ovule, Anther, Filament, Receptacle. Show to the whole class how to drag labels to the right parts of the plant. Click on the Dissect button to show how to pull away each section of the plant. Explain that rather than destroying a living thing, this online resource is ideal for dissection as no real plant is harmed. Divide the class into groups with a computer for each group. Allow each group to work through the Label and Dissect screens, taking it in turns within the group to control the mouse. Walk around the groups, talking through problems and encouraging those who have finished early to click on the magnifying glasses to find out more information about each part. Plenary On the interactive whiteboard, complete the Label and Dissect screens of the online activity as a whole class. Ask the children to identify and explain the functions of each part. Can they retell that part of the story? Extension Hand out copies of the Life cycles worksheet. Ask children to match each part of the plant with the job it does. Homework Look for different flowers on their journey to and from school. On close inspection, which reproductive parts of a flower can they see? Report back to the class.
