The Book of 2 Timothy: Farewell Letter of Apostle Paul

Emperor Nero

Nero watches Rome burn

Painter’s Idea of the Apostle Paul

 it

is believed that Paul was imprisoned because he was blamed by Nero (who burned Rome) as being the mastermind of the burning of Rome, as he was the perceived leader of the Christians in Rome  (Halley’s Bible Handbook)

Chapter 1 : Greetings and Exhortations to Timothy Timothy: Paul’s disciple; a young pastor Chapter 2:Advice to Timothy Chapter 3: Terrible Times of Apostasy; The Word of God as Antidote Chapter 4: Paul’s Last Words

Lessons from 2 Timothy Fan into flame the gift of God/ the anointing/ the abilities God has given you, for God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but of power, love and selfdiscipline Chap 1. v. 6-7 Life application: Just as we fan charcoal until it develops a flame, let us fan into flame the anointings/abilities/gifts God gave us 1.

Lessons from 2 Timothy 2. Do not be ashamed to testify about the Lord -Paul was asking Timothy to not be ashamed of the Lord or his chains Chap 1: v8-10 -He was in chains because of the gospel of Jesus; the gospel is :Jesus died for our sins and rose again to be victorious over sin and death Life application: there is nothing shameful about the gospel; it is the power and salvation of God (Romans 1:16); “shame” comes from our fear of rejection by men, when we value men’s opinions of us more than we value Christ

Lessons from 2 Timothy 3. Know Whom you have believed -KNOW CHRIST! v.12 I am suffering … Yet I am not ashamed, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day. -If you don’t truly know the Lord Jesus who died, how will you be able to bear suffering for Him? -do you know Christ TRULY and DEEPLY? -are you a “fan” or a disciple? -do you love Christ or do you just “serve in the church” without loving Him?

Paul KNEW the Lord ; the Lord stood at Paul’s side and gave him strength  2 Tim 4:17-18  But the Lord stood at my side and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. And I was delivered from the lion's mouth.  The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom.

Lessons from 2 Timothy 4. Continue in what you have heard, keep them as sound/correct/true teaching. Guard the teaching that was planted/ deposited in you. Then entrust it to reliable men. Chap 1 V. 13 and 14: What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus. Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you-- guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us. Chap 2 V. 2 And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others. Chap 3 v.14 continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it. -

Lessons from 2 Timothy 4. God appoints us into His service -it’s not because we are “smart” or “great” or because of anything we have done Chap 1 Verse 9: God has saved us and called us to a holy life-- not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. Chap 1 Verse 11: And of this gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher. -Paul was appointed ; Chap1 v 12: and that is why I am suffering as I am -he was the known leader of all the Gentile churches, that’s why he was imprisoned

Lessons from 2 Timothy God qualifies the called; He doesn’t necessarily call the “qualified”; God’s “foolishness” is wiser than man’s wisdom 1 Cor 1:25-29 For the foolishness of God is wiser than man's wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man's strength. Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things-- and the things that are not-- to nullify the things that are,so that no one may boast before him.

Lessons from 2 Timothy 5. Be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus -God’s grace is sufficient for you; His power is made perfect in our weakness (2 Cor. 12:9) -grace: God’s unmerited, undeserved favor and help

Lessons from 2 Timothy 6. Remember Christ Jesus! -we may be engrossed in the “ministry”; in “serving”; in doctrine; in works; in opposing wickedness that we forget the Lord Himself It’s all about JESUS! 2 Tim 2:8 Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David.

Lessons from 2 Timothy The Church of Ephesus in the book of Revelation had forgotten Jesus! Rev 2:2-7 I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked men, that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false. You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary. Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken your first love. Remember the height from which you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place. But you have this in your favor: You hate the practices of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

Lessons from 2 Timothy “Christianity is not a system of morals; it is the worship of a Person.” -William E.H. Lecky, historian

Lessons from 2 Timothy 7. The Word of God is breathed by God and is to be foundation of your life and source of stability 2 Tim 3:16-17 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Lessons from 2 Timothy Deuteronomy 8:3 Man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD. Your life depends on God’s word.

Lessons from 2 Timothy The word of God is not chained even though Paul was in chains God’s word is not chained. Chapter 2:9 You can chain the messenger but not the message of the word of God. God’s word is powerful by itself. Ps 33:6: By the word of the LORD were the heavens made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth. Ps 33:9 For He spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm. Gen 1:3 And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light.

Lessons from 2 Timothy Jeremiah 23:29 "Is not my word like fire," declares the LORD, "and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces? God’s word is like fire, that burns away impurities God’s word is a hammer, that breaks false ideologies, theories and world-views Let God’s word burn in you and break into pieces what is not from God.

Lessons from 2 Timothy 8. Correctly handle/study the word of truth. Preach the Word! Speak the word faithfully. Don’t get into foolish arguments about useless words and details. (ex. did Jesus wear shoes or not; may kaliskis ba ang Diyos) Avoid godless chatter.=profane and vain babblings (kabastusan; sacrilegious; God-hating and God-mocking)

Lessons from 2 Timothy The word of God is the only weapon against apostasy or the stronghold of false teaching 2 Tim 4:2-4  Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage-- with great patience and careful instruction.  For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.  They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.

Lessons from 2 Timothy 2 Tim 2:14-18 Keep reminding them of these things. Warn them before God against quarreling about words; it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen. Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly. Their teaching will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, who have wandered away from the truth. They say that the resurrection has already taken place, and they destroy the faith of some.

False teaching=spreads like gangrene: Gangrene= the death of body tissue that spreads through the limb. Cessation of blood flow facilitates invasion of the muscles by the bacteria and multiplication of the bacteria because disease-fighting cells cannot reach the area. Jeremiah 23:28 let the one who has My word speak it faithfully… declares the LORD.

Lessons from 2 Timothy 9.Fight the good fight! Finish the race! Keep the faith! Paul’s Last Words: He was nearing execution at the time he wrote 2 Timothy 2 Tim 4:5-8 Keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry. For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time has come for my departure. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day-- and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.

2 Timothy 4:5-8 (The Message Bible)  But you--keep your eye on what you're doing; accept the hard times along with the good; keep the Message alive; do a thorough job as God's servant.  You take over. I'm about to die, my life an offering on God's altar.  This is the only race worth running. I've run hard right to the finish, believed all the way.  All that's left now is the shouting--God's applause! Depend on it, he's an honest judge. He'll do right not only by me, but by everyone eager for his coming.

Lessons from 2 Timothy    

 

RUN HARD TO THE FINISH. BELIEVE ALL THE WAY. REMEMBER JESUS ALWAYS. STUDY HIS WORD LIKE YOUR LIFE DEPENDED ON IT, BECAUSE IT DOES. TEACH THE WORD FAITHFULLY AND CORRECTLY, BECAUSE THE FAITH OF OTHERS MAY BE AFFECTED. LOVE THE LORD ABOVE ALL. LOVE THE LORD NO MATTER WHAT.
