LESSON PREPARATION
2-5-2 Basics Curriculum Objective(s) addressed during this lesson: 11-09 Main Objectives: Understand and Apply the Virtue of Cooperation 11-09-wk. 2: Look for ways to help someone be successful. Lesson Objectives: Long Range: After four Sundays, given examples from Scripture and a specific memory verse, student will comprehend that when you cooperate (work together with others) you can do more than you can do alone. Student will put in action what he has learned by participating in on-site Kidney Walk in support of Creekside Friend, Peyton. At end of Kidney Walk, student will explain in his own words why he participated in the walk. Lesson two objectives: Given teacher directives to complete a task that cannot be done without assistance, student will conclude that certain jobs can only be done when people work together. Given pertinent data of date, names, and time, student will utilize the Big Huge Labs billboard maker (www.bighugelabs.com) to create a billboard advertisement of the upcoming on-site church kidney walk to help their classmate, Peyton succeed in her fundraising efforts. Advertisement will have no spelling, date, or time errors after student editing check and teacher conference. Assessment Plan: Student responses to discussion questions Teacher conference with student Accurate completion of billboard Materials: Computer with Internet Access, Parachute laid out in large group teaching area, Balls, Bible, a Staff, a Sword, printed nametags of Bible characters (Moses, Joshua, Aaron, Hur), 5 student volunteers Inclusion Techniques for Students with Special Needs: Position students strategically Adult/teen helpers positioned near student(s) Individualized assistance as needed Enrichment Techniques: Student can explore the Deeper Quest Discussion Topics and respond in their Deeper Quest Journal Lesson Differentiation: The practice/assignment portion of the lesson will be done in a small group format with two leaders for each group of children to ensure all students will have a turn, discuss, and/or participate. LESSON PRESENTATION Introduction/Motivational Activities/Anticipatory Set: Have one student come up to parachute. Place plastic balls in center. Tell student to hold edge of parachute and make the balls in the middle bounce up and down. When student is not successful, employ the rest of the group to circle around parachute and hold edge cooperating to make the balls bounce up and down. Discuss that many times we need help to succeed at getting a job done. Detailed Teaching Sequence: PRESENT THE BIBLE LESSON (2-5-2 BASICS LARGE GROUP EXPERIENCE 11-08-09) SAY: “You guys cooperating to get the balls bouncing reminds me of a story found in the book of Exodus. (Turn to Exodus 17.) Is Exodus in the Old or New Testament? (Get responses.) That’s right; the Old Testament. It’s actually the second book in the Bible. In Exodus, chapter 17 we meet a really rough, tough, mean, and fierce group of people called the Amalekites [uh MAL uh kights]. The Amalekites were nomads; which means they didn’t really have a home but traveled around the countryside and took over whatever area they were in at the time. They didn’t like people getting near them and if someone did, they were very war-like toward them. The Amalekites attacked the Israelites several times. We’re going to hear about their very first attack on the Israelites. We’re all going to have to cooperate to tell this story and I’m going to need everyone’s help! Choose an older boy to play the Rock. Choose other older kids to play Moses, Joshua, Aaron, and Hur. (Choose a ‘her’ for ‘Hur.’ You can enjoy the humor even if they don’t.) Place ‘Nametags’ around their necks. Give Joshua a sword and Moses a staff. Divide the room in half: one half is Amalekite and the other is Israelite. Teach Amalekites to do a ‘war cry’ and beat their chests when winning. Israelites should stomp and yell, ‘Go, team!’ when winning.
2
(Use Moses to practice. Guide Moses to grasp the staff in both hands and hold it parallel to the floor.) “Let’s practice with our teams. Amalekites, when Moses’ staff is down, you’re winning; what do you do? (Kids respond with Amalekite war cry.) Very good! Israelites, when Moses’ staff is up, you’re winning; what do you do? (Israelites stomp and cheer.) Great! I think we’re all ready to tell our story. AMALEKITES VS ISRAELITES LEADER: “The Israelites were traveling throughout the land, just as God commanded them to do after they fled from Egypt. Unfortunately, they were too close to the nomadic Amalekites and the Amalekites attacked the Israelites. So Moses ordered Joshua to choose some men to fight the Amalekites. And that’s what Joshua did. Place Joshua with sword in front of Israelites. “Joshua chose his soldiers carefully and gathered them together because the next day, they would battle the Amalekite army. Are you ready to lead your army, Joshua? Prompt Joshua to raise his sword overhead in solidarity with his army. Prompt the Israelites to stomp and cheer. “Okay, so Joshua and the Israelite army are ready to do their part. Place Moses, Aaron, and Hur in center of stage. As Moses holds up or lowers staff, get reaction from Israelites or Amalekites, depending. Moses will need to listen to Leader and respond accordingly. GOD’S STAFF LEADER: “The next day, Moses, Aaron, and Hur [HER] went to the top of a hill and watched the battle. Moses did his part to help Joshua and the Israelites. As long as Moses held up God’s staff (prompt Moses to hold the staff overhead), the Israelites were winning. (Israelites stomp and cheer.) But when Moses lowered God’s staff (prompt Moses), the Amalekites were winning. (Amalekites do war cry.) Moses would hold up the staff (prompt Moses) for a long time (Israelites stomp and cheer) but then he would get tired and he would have to lower the staff. (Amalekites: war cry) AARON AND HUR HELP LEADER: “Aaron and Hur noticed that Moses was getting very tired. So they got a big rock for Moses to sit on. Prompt Aaron and Hur to move Rock behind Moses and seat Moses on it. Rock can be on hands and knees with Moses sitting on his back. LEADER: “Moses rested on that rock, raising the staff (Israelites respond) but then lowering the staff (Amalekites respond) because his arms would still get very, very tired. Again, Aaron and Hur wanted to help Moses so they got on either side of Moses and held up his arms so that he could successfully hold up the staff. (Aaron and Hur hold up Moses’ arms. Israelites respond.) Since Moses had the rock to sit on, Aaron and Hur to hold up his arms, and God’s power through the staff, can you guess who won the battle that day? (Get responses.) That’s right—Joshua and the Israelites! (Prompt Israelites to stomp and cheer.) This is what happens when you [Impress] look for ways to help somebody succeed. Say that with me.” KIDS and LEADER: [Impress] “Look for ways to help somebody succeed.” LEADER: “Let’s give our actors a hand. You guys did a great job helping me successfully tell our story today. You can return to your seats. Closure: LEADER: “Think about this for a minute: Moses looked for a way to help the Israelites succeed so he put a great leader—Joshua—in charge as the leader of the army. Joshua wanted the Israelites to succeed, too, so he chose his soldiers carefully and he led them with all his skill. Moses kept on doing his part by obeying God and holding up God’s staff to help the Israelites succeed. Then, when Moses got tired, Aaron and Hur helped Moses succeed by getting him a rock to sit on and holding up his arms. And of course, the Israelite army kept on doing its part, too. “Now it’s your turn to help someone in the same way Aaron and Hur helped Moses. We have a Creekside friend who really needs us to work together and help her succeed. You guys know Peyton, but you might not know that Peyton is sick. Her kidneys don’t work right, and she doesn’t feel good much of the time. Peyton really wants to help other people who have kidney disease by walking in the kidney walk. When people walk in the kidney walk, they give money to join in the walk. That money is used to help doctors learn how to fix kidneys that don’t work right. The same day Peyton goes the Kidney Walk in Pittsburgh, we will have a Kidney Walk here at our church. We want lots of people to come to the kidney walk at our church so during small group time, we are going to work on creating an advertisement on the computer so lots of people will come and work together to help Peyton. We are going to help Peyton be successful just like Aaron and Hur helped Moses.” Join your small group leader and when it is time to go to computer, I will teach you how to make the advertisements.
