Lesson Plan Earth’s Natural Resources Topic: Conserving Earth’s Natural Resources Materials: - Book: Why Should I Save Energy? by Jen Green and Mike Gordon or video reading of book https://vimeo.com/163341590 - Questions from www.globaleducation.edu.au/ - Writing easel with chart paper for discussions - Markers for writing on easel - Students need paper and pencil Open: Teacher will begin by asking students what a natural resource is to gain background knowledge. Then she will ask what are ways you use natural resources and energy? After discussing and recording notes on teacher chart paper, teacher will tell students we will read aloud Why Should I Save Energy by Jen Green and Mike Gordon to gain understanding of ways they can conserve those precious natural resources. Body: After reading the story, teacher will have questions posted on the projector for students to discuss and record in partners. Questions: On the line: •

Who in the family wasted energy? How?



Which things run on fuel?



What did the family decide to do to save energy? Between the lines:



What do you think about having no power at school?



Why did the boy say that energy is precious?



What interests you about energy, and about saving energy? Beyond the lines:



What effect does saving energy have on the world’s fuel supplies?



Discuss renewable and non-renewable fuel supplies. Make and illustrate a list for each category.



Why is it important for us all to think about saving energy?



What can we do in our classroom to save energy?

Close: After students have had 10-15 minutes to discuss these questions and record their answers on paper, teacher will ask students to tell one big idea from each group of questions they discussed as a partnership and teacher will record this on chart paper. After each pair has shared with the class, teacher will wrap up the lesson by highlighting important ways we can save energy and promote healthy habits to help our Earth continue to blossom for future generations. Assessment: Partner questions.
