Miss Lyons Eng 7 Lesson 6 Call of the Wild Objectives. In this lesson 1. Students will practice their spelling and vocabulary skills 2. Students will learn a new study technique in preparation for their upcoming vocabulary test 3. Students will read/listen to chapter 5 of Call of the Wild 4. Students will apply their characterization homework assignment to a new character trait map and expand upon their work Understandings. At the end of this lesson students will be able to 1. Apply their new vocabulary to comprehend the story 2. Describe the plot of chapter 5 3. Study more efficiently for their vocabulary test 4. Analyze Buck’s character using specific evidence from the novella Assessment. Student achievement and understanding will be checked 1. Spelling test 2. Class discussion Instructional Approach. 1. Warm-up Put character trait map on overhead, ask students to use their characterization worksheet to brainstorm as a class three major character traits for Buck and to fill in these traits on their own copies of the chart Students will use these charts later to do a character analysis 10 minutes

2. Spelling test 10 minutes 3. Read/listen to chapter 5 20-25 minutes 4. Demonstrate new study technique for vocabulary test (folded paper) and create study guide Remainder of class HW: finish reading chapter 5, study for vocabulary test

Standard 4: Vocabulary and Concept Development Students will understand and acquire new vocabulary and use it correctly in reading and writing. • Determine the meanings of unfamiliar words using context clues (for example, contrast or cause and effect stated in the text). • Determine pronunciations, meanings, alternate word choices, parts of speech, or etymologies of words using dictionaries and thesauruses. Standard 12: Fiction Students will identify, analyze, and apply knowledge of the structure and elements of fiction and provide evidence from the text to support their understanding. • Analyze the connections among setting, characterization, conflict, plot, and/or theme. • Analyze characters’ personality traits, motivations, and interactions with others and give supporting evidence from their words, actions, or thoughts. • Analyze the ways characters change or interact with others over time and give supporting evidence from the text.
