Grammatica Being formal In Dutch, there are two ways to say ‘you’: a formal way (u) and an informal way (je/jij). You can compare this to the use of ‘du’ and ‘Sie’ in German and ‘tu’ and ‘vous’ in French. Use ‘u’ to address - unknown people that are older than ± 18 years; - people with a ‘higher social status’ (teacher,Mevrouw doctor, judge etc);helpt: Jansen - older family members like grandparents (depends onthat family); Be aware the rules for Use ‘je’ (unstressed) and ‘jij’ (stressed) to address using ‘u’ in Flanders are - friends, family, colleagues; different. In Flanders, ‘u’ is - children; used more often than in the - people from the former group that gave you permission to say ‘je/jij’ Netherlands. Rule of thumb: if you address people with their first name, you can say ‘je/jij’. But… if you are not sure: use ‘u’. This way you will not offend people unnecessarily.
Grammatica Wie? You can ask a question using the word wie? Wie bent u? Wie ben jij?
Who are you? (formal) Who are you? (informal)
Wie is dit? Wie is dat?
Who is this? Who is that?
Grammatica Ook The word ‘ook’ means ‘too’ or ‘also’. Unlike English, ‘ook’ is usually not placed at the beginning or at the end of a sentence (except for very short sentences). Ik leer Nederlands. Ik leer ook Nederlands.
I learn Dutch. I learn Dutch too.
Ik ben lerares. Ik ben ook lerares.
I am a teacher. I am a teacher too.
