LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE: Using ICT in Teaching and Learning SUBJECT AREA: APPLIED SCIENCE LESSON TITLE: Deepening understanding of the various functions of the organelles in cell. TYPES:

GRADE LEVEL: SEC 1 Express

TIME ALLOTTED: 1 hour in lesson Task at home: 30 minutes

(UBD) + (NE) + (ICT)

LESSON DESCRIPTION: (Write a concise description of what occurs in this lesson.) Journaling is a popular educational tool to encourage student self reflection as they engage in the learning process. It has been shown through many research studies that journaling encourages deeper reflection and more formal thought in the learning process, promoting self directed learning as the student seeks and construct the information gained from the internet and integrate the information into his/her own learning map. In this lesson, students were first briefed on the basic workings of the cell, captitalising on the knowledge they had already gained from their primary school. The lesson also promotes the use of a variety of collaborative learning techniques to allow peer teaching and learning and articulation amongst the students. LESSON FLOW Each work bench actually houses 4 students with a laptop computer shared between a pair. The students are told that they should select 2 organelles that should be different from the ones the opposite pair were doing. Students are experiencing some form of collaboration in the quest of knowledge. They were then encouraged to work in pairs using the THINK-PAIR-SHARE method on 2 organelles from a list of 8 given for 5 minutes. They are encouraged to go into the following website to gain more information on those organelles chosen, filling up the worksheet as they do. Some of these sites have already been housed in our school self constructed LMS- Xmoogle.

The time given is used using the digital timer displayed on projector which ensures the students are on task .

After 5 minutes, the pair is encourage to share and talk to the opposite pair. Hence, each pair of students gained the knowledge from 4 students.

Instruction is then passed down to allow one representative of the group of 4 to “fly” off to another bench. Hence there is one member of each group that went off to another group. This member is to deliver information of the 4 organelles to another group and at the same time, gained any new knowledge of new organelles or extra information added to his current knowledge. 5 minutes is allowed for this event.

The fluttering robin then flew back to the original group and then start to share with his/her former group members. The next task requests the members to search for information about Singapore and the various ministries and agencies as they need to draw parallels with the function of the organelles in the cell. Singapore is described as a microcosm and several sub-questions are placed in this journal entry.

Screen shot of journal question posed:

No help was given to the students on where they can get the information as we need to promote 21st century skills which is to inculcate good search and filtering techniques in our students. It is quite heartening to find many of our students can look for relevant information from the Singapore govt website and able to click into the sublinks to extract more information on various ministries. However, they will encouraged not to first click onto each individual ministry website but through the name, what functions they think these ministries are doing and which organelles is suited for their function. One member of the pair who has already logged in will be the representative to pen down some thoughts as they search, extract and make sense of the information from the internet. At the end of the lesson, the student is given 5 days to finish off the assignment by logging onto the Xmoogle LMS and finish up their personal journal entry. This activity promotes a greater understanding of Singapore (NE Education) and deepens the learning of the functions of the organelles. This journaling activity allows the students to reflect on their own knowledge and experiment with new ideas in a safe haven as these journals are kept private by the LMS and not seen by anyone else except for the teacher and the respective student. The teacher can browse through the entries and offer certain prompts for improvement that allows the students to further refine their own entry. At the end, the teacher can open up all the journal entries which can then be seen by all students.

LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE: Using ICT in Teaching and Learning CLASSROOM LAYOUT AND GROUPING OF STUDENTS: (Where will the learning take place? How will the room be organized with the computers? How will the students be grouped (class group, individuals, pairs, small groups, etc…) Science Lab

INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES: (Identification of the specific learning outcomes expected to happen based on Competency Standards.)

Creativity and Innovation Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology. Students: a. Apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes. Communication and Collaboration Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others. Students: a. Interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing a variety of digital environments and media. Research and Information Fluency Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information. Students: b. Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media. c. Evaluate and select information sources and digital tools based on the appropriateness to specific tasks.

MATERIALS, RESOURCES AND TECHNOLOGY: 1. Materials and Resources for this Lesson: Xmoogle with embedded websites 2. Technology Components for this Lesson a. Computer with internet access

LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE: Using ICT in Teaching and Learning MATERIALS, RESOURCES AND TECHNOLOGY: 3. Web Site for this Lesson – Using School Xmoogle system – Lesson Flow and Journal Entry Resources link – University of Utah – Genetics Learning Hub 4. Computer Software for this Lesson

STUDENT’S PRESENT LEVEL OF PERFORMANCE AND KNOWLEDGE: ( Do the students have the adequate knowledge to complete the lesson successfully? What pre-requisite skills must the students have to complete the lesson content? Include technology skills.) Able to do Google search, able to operate the browser. SUPPLEMENTAL ACTIVITIES: 1. Additional activities to expand the lesson 2. Remediation activities for the student needing more instruction and practices 3. Assignment Students are to consider and try to draw an analogy to the governance of Singapore if Singapore is a cell and if cancer is to strike a cell. What ill consequences will that be?

ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION: How will you measure the student’s success? Formally or informally? Formal evaluation of student work requires that a grade is taken while informal might be monitoring of work, or class discussion. This section should contain a description of the assessment process, the criteria for achievement, and performance levels. The criteria should directly align to objectives and instruction. Describe your plan for providing feedback to your students. • • •

Number of connections to the Singapore ministries and agencies – The proper acronyms given to each that was mentioned. Able to explain the rationale behind and draw parallel to each of the organelle.
