To be able to take advantage of this amazing opportunity Project Trust has given me, I need to raise £4,660 by the end of August. I plan to raise the money in a number of ways, including through Charitable Trusts, a raffle, and a sponsored event, but each depends on the generosity of individuals, companies and organisations.

Any assistance you may be able to give to me in raising the £4,660, whether it be in the form of money, advice or donations for a raffle, would be greatly appreciated. Please get in contact with me using the details below, and make any cheques payable to ‘Project Trust’.

THAILAND With Project Trust

About Me

Thailand

My name is Billy Harrington-Roberts and I am currently a sixth-form student at Graveney, my local secondary school in the inner London Borough of Wandsworth. I am studying English Literature, Maths, Biology, and Politics at A-Level and plan to go on to study International Relations at Leeds University. In the future I hope to work for an International Organisation or NGO. Before then however, I am eagerly anticipating my gap year abroad. During this time I hope to be living and volunteering in Thailand for the full 12 months, primarily teaching English to children on a placement with the charity ‘Project Trust’.

By living and working in Thailand for a whole year I hope to immerse myself in a completely new culture and by doing so gain a rewarding and invaluable experience and understanding. I also hope to give something back to the country and have a positive impact on the local community. Although the exact location of my project will not be finalised until the beginning of May, l am most likely to be situated in central Thailand, in a small city or town such as Nakhon Sawan or Kamphaeng Phet. There I will primarily teach English to Secondary School pupils but will also seize the opportunity to volunteer my time to many other causes, such as helping out at an elephant orphanage or teaching Buddhist monks.

Project Trust Project Trust is an educational charity (No. SCO25668) who has been sending young volunteers between the ages of 17 and 19 abroad for over 40 years. In 2009 they plan to send around 200 volunteers to 21 countries world-wide. I attended a 5-day selection course in February on the Hebridean Isle of Coll where Project Trust is based, and was subsequently selected for my placement. I will be returning to Coll in July for training. Although the primary aims of Project Trust are to benefit and educate the volunteers they send, all placements have a positive effect on the local community abroad. Project Trust also ensures that no jobs away from local people.
