Leadership Project Proposal - Samantha Abouav Project Purpose To advocate for music education. To celebrate the music program that is growing at Reed Elementary. Project Objective I hope to achieve a larger community support for the music program. The objective is for other teachers, parents, families, and admin to understand more fully the benefits of music education at the elementary level, to appreciate the curriculum that supports these benefits, and to grow a deeper support for the music program at Reed Elementary. Project Impact All students at Reed Elementary will take part in the project. Families and other staff at Reed Elementary will see the project in action, which will hopefully get them involved. Project Description March is the national Music In Our Schools Month. During music classes starting in the last week of February, all students at Reed Elementary will learn the song Music Alone Shall Live. This song will then be performed by 5th grade students at every Flag Salute (Monday mornings) during the month of March, and students will perform it as a canon during the final Flag Salute. A calendar will be posted outside of the Music Room. For each day of the month of March a different fact about the benefits of music education will be posted. These facts will be discussed with grades 3-5 during regular music classes. Select 5th grade students will read a few facts at each Flag Salute in March. During the first week in April, a homework assignment will be sent home to help initiate conversations with families about music education. Project Implementation February Gain admin support, get approval for the parts that will be in the Flag Salutes Create the calendar, research benefits and make a 31-day list of facts Teach students the song Music Alone Shall Live Create new music newsletter that provides info about MIOSM March -
