If you plan to shop remotely this year, follow these safety tips from the Federal Trade Commission. • Know what you’re getting. Is it a real Chanel handbag? • Look for signs a site is safe. Look for a closed padlock on the browser’s status bar – before you enter your personal & financial information. When asked to provide payment information, the beginning of the website’s URL address should change from http to shttp or https, indicating that the purchase is encrypted or secured. • Secure your computer. At a minimum, your computer should have anti-virus and antispyware software and a firewall. • Use credit cards. Credit cards are generally a safer option because they allow buyers to seek a credit from the issuer if the product isn’t delivered or isn’t what was ordered.

Credit Score Myths According to Experian, one of the three major credit reporting agencies, a few myths prevail in regards to credit scores. Myth #1 Checking my own credit report will lower my score Personal inquiries, also known as “soft inquiries” or “below the line inquiries,” are not visible to lenders and therefore are not part of your credit score calculation. So checking your own credit report or score does NOT negatively impact your score. Myth #2 Applying for new credit will lower my score This depends on the type of credit you’re applying for. If you apply for several credit cards within a short period of time, the number of inquiries will go up, which could drop your score. But if you’re applying for a mortgage or auto loan, multiple inquiries from these lenders are generally treated as a “single inquiry” and will have little impact on your credit score. Buying a Home The type of loan you choose will affect how much you have to put down, pay monthly and for how long. Don’t forget to add the closing costs to the grand total. Adjustable-rate loans usually offer a lower initial interest rate. The interest rate fluctuates over the life of the loan. When interest rates rise, generally so do your loan payments; and when interest rates fall, your monthly payments may be lowered. Conventional loans are mortgage loans other than those insured or guaranteed by a government agency such as the FHA, the VA or the Rural Development Services. Fixed-rate loans generally have repayment terms of 15, 20 or 30 years. Host a Pumpkin Carving Party Entertain the children and get your front porch ready for trick-or-treating with a pumpkin-carving party! Try these secrets to boast the best Jack-O-Lantern on the block. • Select a large, light orange pumpkin. The bigger the pumpkin, the easier it is to carve. Similarly, lighter colored pumpkins tend to be softer. • Cut a lid around the top of the pumpkin at a 45-degree angle; if you cut the lid vertically, it can fall through. • Save the seeds for a healthy, tasty snack! • Scrape the back wall of the pumpkin extra well, because that’s where the light will reflect when you light up the gourd. • If you want the Jack-OLantern to last, soak it in bleach water, dry it thoroughly, and coat the entire pumpkin (inside and out) with vegetable oil or petroleum jelly to prevent it from shriveling. • Trace the pattern you want directly on the pumpkin before you start carving. • Consider using a touch-light instead of a candle to reduce the fire-hazard risk. Turnips are an excellent source of vitamin C. Choose ones with smooth white and purple skin. They should be small to medium in size, about 2 to 3 inches in diameter, and should feel heavy. You can boil and mash them with butter and cream like potatoes or roast with sea salt. Swiss Chard is a good source of vitamins A and C and iron. Look for crisp, tender leaves that are not overgrown and are brightly colored. Sauté in olive oil and sea salt until wilted.
