Activity II CHANGE OF MATTER AIM Learning some material changes. BASIC TEORY Chemistry is the study of matter and the changes it undergoes. Matter is anything that has mass, which means that if you can weight it. There are three familiar states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas. APPARATUS • Reaction tube • Tube holder • Chemical glass • Nipper Cork • Spiritus lamp • Candles • Three feet
Refined water Gauze Salt Iodine (I2) Magnesium (Mg) ribbon Chloride acid liquid (HCL) Marble rock (also known as Pualam)
PROCEDURE 1. Put some pieces of candle into the reaction tube, and then put in the water heater. Watch the material change! After the material has been changed, lift the reaction tube and plug it into the cold water, watch the material changes! (change 1) 2. Add a spoon of salt into a glass of water, stir it. What happened with the salt? Then heat the liquid on the three feet and the spirit lamp until the liquid condensed! What do you get and feel? Is there any new material after the salt incessant? (change 2) 3. Add a small piece of Iodine condensation into a dry reaction tube, close the tube with the nipper, then heat it by the spirit lamp, watch the material changes! Cool the tube and watch what happened! (change 3) 4. Take 3cm of Magnesium ribbon, clean it with the sand paper, nip by the nipper, and heat the tip of the ribbon with the fire. Watch and note the changes! (change 4) 5. Add 5mL of HCL liquid into the reaction tube, and also add the marble stone into the tube. Watch and note the changes! (change 5) QUESTION 1. What happened after the candle heated and cooled? → When the candle heated, the candle was melted into liquid. And when the candle cooled again, the candle became solid.
2. Is there any candle characteristic left after the candle heated and then cooled? Explain about it! → Sure!!! When the candle heated, it stills a candle although that was a liquid. And when the candle cooled, it stills a candle. 3. What happened after the salt dissolved into the water and heated? → The salt was crystallizing. 4. Is there any salt characteristic left after the salt dissolved and then heated? Explain about it! → Yes. When the salt heated, it reverts to a salt before dissolve or heated.
5. What happened after the Iodine heated and cooled? → When the Iodine heated, the Iodine became gas with purple color. And when the Iodine cooled, it was turn into solid again.
6. Are there any characteristic differences between normal and heated Iodine? Explain about it! → No they aren’t. Because these characteristics still Iodine’s characteristic. So, just the existence (wujud) those change. 7. Write characteristic differences between normal and burnt Mg ribbon! → Before the Mg ribbon was burned, the color was grey. And when the Mg ribbon has burned, its color was become white and its form changed become ash.
8. Is there any new substance appears after HCL liquid and marble stone mixed? Explain about it! → Yes. When the marble stone was put into the HCL liquid there was appear some bubble, so HCL liquid was more turbid and the marble stone was begin scraped. Then there was appear some sediment remnant marble stone in the bottom of the reaction tube.
9. Between those changes, which one includes physics’ change and which one includes chemical changes? → Change 1, 2, and 3 are physics change. → Change 4 and 5 are chemist change.
10. Write conclusion from the experiment! → Physics’ change doesn’t make the new material (thing). And chemist’ change make the new material (thing) where have new characteristic. 11. Write each 5 example of physics’ change and chemical changes we meet in daily activities! → Physics change: broke, heated, cooled, cut, and the lamp was flame by electricity. → Chemical change: burned, stalled, rusted, explosion, and fried.
