Lower blood glucose by stimulating glucose uptake in skeletal muscle and fat, inhibiting hepatic glucose production. Indicated in tx of diabetes mellitus.
Hypoglycemia, allergy or hypersensitivity. Use cautiously during stress and infection.

Interactions with other patient drugs, OTC or herbal medicines (ask patient specifically) Thyroid preperations
Lab value alterations caused by medicine May cause decreased serum inorganic phosphate, magnesium, and potassium levels.
Be sure to teach the patient the following about this medication Instruct pt and family on administration technique. Explain that this controls hyperglycemia, but does not cure diabetes. Instruct pt in proper testing of blood sugar and ketones. Emphasise the importance of diet and regular exercise. Instruct pt on signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia. Diabetics should carry a source of sugar incase this happens.

Assessment Why would you hold or not give this med? If signs of severe hypoglycemia exist. If the pt is experiencing severe hyperglycemia, it may be necessary to administer a shorter acting insulin.
