Every piece of every genre of literature follows or possesses certain literary elements so that, even when they go across genres, the meaning and lesson will not be lost. At this juncture we will get to know these literary elements and which of them are unique with one another, that is to say between a short story and a play.

Okay. Thank you! Just for clarification, Washington Irving was not born on 1738 but rather on April 3rd, 1783. According to the accounts about his biography, he died at the age of 76 due to heart failure.

You’re right when you say that he is the pioneer of short story. In fact, he is credited with perfecting the American short story and for writing for entertainment as opposed to enlightening. He was also known as the “American man of Letters”.

He was intended for legal profession, but his studies were interrupted by illness necessitating a voyage to Europe. He then, decided to quit law and began to write for a living. Two of his famous short stories are “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and the story that we will be discussing, “Rip Van Winkle”

Lastly, Irving used to rove through the Hudson Valley to gather Dutch legends. One of which is “Rip Van Winkle”.

As, Irving anchored his piece to the Dutch legends. I will be handling each of you a “Human Bingo” which is consists of experiences of people that can be considered a legend or a myth to reveal what you know about it. Do you know how to play a BINGO?

Before, America was colonized by the British monarchy. So, they cannot really act independently they’re under the British. So just like the people at the Inn, America acted passively and didn’t take action in improving their self. Now, if you were in the shoes of the townsfolk at the inn would you choose to act like them? If not, what would you do then? Or maybe let’s but it this way. If you have a problem at school would you let it be or take action?

The inn actually represented the time before the revolution. During that period the American people were quite passive and unmoving just like the people at the inn. But after Rip woke up the Inn was changed into the Union hotel. What time period do you think did Rip woke up to, was it before or during the American revolution?

Hmm. not quite the answer.

Yes, you are right the time period when rip woke up to was after the revolution. As compared to the inn the union hotel was a place of productivity. If you are to read the original text or story of the Rip Van Winkle the Union hotel is more elaborately described there. So the time Rip woke up that was the period when America was now slowly starting to build their government. This was the time of the Birth of the American republic. The time when America started to emerge from their rubbles and the remnants of their war with the British Monarchy.

Ma’am, if I were them I think that I would have acted the same because I think that it is too risky to take action. You don’t really have a clue of what’ll happen.

To accomplish this, I want you to interview someone who knows any legends. It can be your lolo/s or lola/s because stories like these were really quite famous during their time. You can also interview your parents or maybe aunts. Afterwards, I want you to make a myth of your own based from your interview and choose any of the following to serve as your final output. 1. Podcast/ Radio drama 2. Video of you telling a story
