Methane Carbon also forms number of organic compounds. Organic compounds are the compounds of carbon and hydrogen . The first and the simplest hydrocarbon is methane . Methane is the chief constituent of natural gas.
The molecular formula of Methane ►
The molecular formula of methane is CH4. In a molecule of Methane four hydrogen atoms are attached to the carbon atom.
►
PREPARATION OF METHANE Methane is Methane is prepared in laboratory by heating anhydrous sodium acetate (CH3COONa) with soda lime (a mixture of sodium hydroxide and calcium oxide).
Properties of methane Physical Properties ► Chemical Properties ►
Physical Properties Methane is colourless gas. ► It is non- piosoness. ► It is lighter than air. ► It is insoluble in water. ► Compressed natural gas (CNG) which contains chiefly methane, can be stored in cylinder for transportation and distribution. ►

(carbon black) ► Methane decomposes on heating in adsence of oxygen at about 10000C In this process carbon (carbon black) and hydrogen are produced. ►
Uses of Methane Methane is used as a clean fuel for heating at home as well as in industries. ► It is used extensively for running automobiles especially buses, cars and autorickshaws. ► CNG(Compressed Natural Gas)filled cylinders are fitted in automobiles. ► It is used in making carbon Black. ► Large number of organic compounds are prepared from CH4 ►
