Lake Chelan Visitor Guide 2009

Welcome

Welcome to Lake Chelan The Lake Chelan Valley is an oasis under the hot North Central Washington sun

According to a poll called “Great Escapes” by the Seattle-based television show, Northwest Back Roads, Lake Chelan is one of the best destinations in Washington. Chelan tied with Lake Washington as the voters’ favorite lake destination. It was considered the No. 1 place to water ski. Chelan was named the second best place to bring an RV and a boat, and the third best place to go camping. But don’t limit your list to these. Lake Chelan and the surrounding lakes and rivers are top-notch fishing holes. People also come here to sail, mountain bike and fly hang gliders. Because Lake Chelan is a true, four-season destination, winter visitors can go snowmobiling and downhill or cross country skiing just a few miles from town. One reason Lake Chelan draws visitors from the big population centers is its natural beauty and wildlife. Don’t be surprised if you come across a coyote, deer, bighorn sheep, mountain goat or even a moose. Bird lovers will find bald eagles, ravens, grouse, owls, hawks, osprey and countless other species. Lake Chelan is the largest natural lake in Washington and is the third deepest and one of the most pristine lakes in the United States. Please remember that Chelan is beautiful only because it is sparkling clean. Please leave this wonderful natural setting as you found it. Haul out garbage, dump sewage at the available pump-out stations and remove all weeds from your boat before entering or leaving Lake Chelan. And most importantly, enjoy your time here.

Greetings from the Mayor Welcome! On behalf of the City of Chelan and all its residents and businesses, I hope you will enjoy everything our community has to offer as much as we have. Generations of visitors have come to Chelan for our sunny skies, sandy beaches and the blue waters of Lake Chelan, but they soon discover it’s a year-round destination, offering a variety of activities from a cruise on the Lady of the Lake, a wine tasting tour or an afternoon at one of our many festivals, music concerts, classic car shows and other fun events. Whether you come for a weekend, a few weeks or a lifetime, I’m confident you’ll feel the same way longtime residents do about this special place we call home. Explore our community and experience our friendly, smalltown charm, diverse restaurants, growing wine industry and abundant outdoor activities. Should you choose to make Lake Chelan your home, or if you would like to find out more about relocating, stop by City Hall, located at 135 E. Johnson Ave. Helpful staff members are available to answer your questions and help make your vacation or relocation here a dream come true. The friendly staff at the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Information Center are also available to assist you with information to make your Lake Chelan experience sensational. You can reach them by calling 682-3503, or stop by their office at 102 E. Johnson Ave. in Chelan. Relax and enjoy … we’re happy you’re here! Bob Goedde, Mayor

Things to do Scenic Drives

quaint shops, good restaurants and bars, not to mention a swimming hole and beautiful scenery. In the mountains behind Manson, a 70-mile track will lead four-wheel-drive vehicles up Grade Creek Road toward the South Navarre and onto Cooper Mountain. The ride bumps through a number of drainages and sporadically opens onto breathtaking views of Lake Chelan and the Chelan/Sawtooth Mountains. Maps and information on these routes are available at the Chelan Ranger Station Office at 428 W. Woodin Ave., next to the Caravel Resort.

Murals

The Lake Chelan Valley has much to offer in the way of driving adventures. Both shores have distinctive sights and attractions to appeal to every level of tourist, from the dirt-road adventurer, to the small-town explorer. A drive along the south shore will lead you to Fields Point, a small park with picnic tables, a swimming hole and an informational kiosk with a 3-D relief map of the Lake Chelan basin. Continuing on, the pavement ends at 25-Mile Creek, but a primitive road heads over the mountains and into the Entiat Valley. Or you could go straight up to the great scenic views on Slide Ridge and Stormy Mountain. In 2004, wildfires burned nearly 50,000 acres along this route, and visitors who make this drive can get a closeup look at the burn zone. The dirt road that winds up Chelan Butte makes for a shorter trip. The Butte rises above downtown Chelan to an elevation of 3,800 feet, and offers unbeatable views of Chelan and the lake, the Columbia River and the flatlands to the east. The north shore offers a relaxed, welltraveled path to Manson, full of apple orchards and new agri-tourism businesses, including an ever-growing number of wineries. Downtown Manson is full of 10

Chelan is a 106-year-old town in the heart of the North Cascades. It is known as a center for tourism and agriculture. But for the discriminating mural connoisseur, Chelan is also a tremendous outdoor museum. Throughout the City of Chelan, the region’s culture, history and industry are explored and expressed through murals. Since 1994, local artist Ron Blackaby and others have painted scenes depicting everything from a local grower grappling with a stockpile of gigantic apples, to homage to Chief Peter Wapato. The murals can be found on downtown businesses, banks and churches. There are 14 in all, and each one includes an apple - sometimes well hidden. To see every mural in one day makes for an excellent walking tour of Chelan. The apple label mural on the west wall of the Visitor Center is the first stop on the tour. The Chamber maintains the murals through its Community Enrichment Fund, and some of the artwork was restored four years ago. Three or four new murals may be added in the near future. Maps and background information for the murals can be found at the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center.

Chelan Valley Players

Since forming in 1985, Chelan Valley Players has brought top-notch dramatic

productions to Chelan. This year will be no different. The show this summer will be “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change.” The musical revue opens July 24 and runs to Aug. 14. The late fall show will be “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.” Show dates are pending, but will begin in late September. The children’s theater workshop is an annual summer event. As many as 75 children learn how to put on a show. Look for more information at www.chelanvalleyplayers.com.

Riverwalk Pavilion

Sit on the grassy slope and take in a show at the pavilion at Riverwalk Park, just off downtown Chelan’s main street. The location offers an excellent view of the Chelan River and Chelan Butte beyond. The Riverwalk Pavilion is a hub of activity every summer. Festivals, fairs, concerts and plays all make use of the stage. Look for the Rotary Salmon BBQ on Aug. 15 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. The spectrum of cultural activities is truly broad. Bach Fest will take its traditional place on the stage the second week of July. Check the fall schedule at www.chelanpud.org under “Parks” and “Special Events.”

Things to do Antiques, Art, Collectibles

The Lake Chelan Valley offers a respite from water-related activities with a healthy antique, fine art and collectible scene. Three antique shops make up something of a mini-tour for antique lovers. Pick up the “Treasures of Chelan” antique map at the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center. Other shops have antiques tucked away here and there among collectibles and gift items. Along with treasures out of North Central Washington’s farmhouses and small-town residences, you may discover choice pieces from the East Coast or Europe. Fine art can be viewed in several art galleries in the valley. Discover oils, acrylics, watercolors and pastels of the beautiful scenery and life in and around Lake Chelan. Also find original, fine jewelry pieces, photographs, prints, sculp-

tures, hand-carved walking sticks and stained glass originals. If collecting is your passion, you are in luck at Lake Chelan. The variety is boundless - flags, copperware, glassware, marionettes, souvenir spoons and mugs, china dolls, doorknockers, Christmas items, basketry and candlesticks. You will also find everything imaginable for the serving and enjoyment of local wines and fruit, household items decorated with apples, rocks and minerals, prints of old historic events, art deco vinegar and oil bottles, quilts, items for nature lovers - the list goes on. Whatever it is, you can probably find what you’re looking for in the Lake Chelan Valley.

Lake Chelan was carved out by glaciers more than 10,000 years ago. Native Americans populated the lake’s shores for centuries, before white settlers arrived in the 1800s. The city of Chelan was founded in 1902. The museum holds Native American artifacts from around the region. Other exhibits tell the story of early white settlers, miners and hydroplane racers. There is a tribute to the local apple industry and the lost art of old-fashioned apple labels. Apple labels, historic photos and numerous publications are available for purchase.

Museums

Next to the clock in downtown Chelan, take a step back in time. On the corner of Woodin and Emerson, visitors to the valley can find the Lake Chelan Historical Society’s Museum.

Pamphlets are also available for selfguided historical walking tours. As an example of early 20th century architecture, check out Hotel Chelan, currently home of the Campbell’s Restaurant and Pub. Built in 1901, it is one of the oldest buildings in Chelan. Another example of early American architecture is St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, built in 1898 by volunteers. Its steeple and belfry were added in 1900. The Ruby Theatre, just down the street, was built in 1914. It is thought to be the oldest continuously running movie theater in Washington State. During the summer the museum will be open Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Hours will vary in the fall and winter. The museum will also be open by appointment during that time. For more information or to make appointments call 682-5644. In Manson, a new reading corner opened in May 2004. Ray Bumgarner collected artifacts, pictures and writings about the area during his 88-year lifetime in the hopes that one day they would be put in Manson’s own museum. When he died, he left more than $300,000 to the Parks Department to make this dream a reality. Bumgarner’s collection has found a home in a building the Parks Department bought in his name at 312 S. Quetiloquasoon, behind the Manson School District Office. It is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information call 687-9635.

Lake Chelan Rodeo

If you haven’t experienced the thrill of watching a bull rider attempt to ride a rip-snortin’, nasty 2,000 pound bull that wants nothing more than to spin the rider on its horns, you’ll get your chance if you visit Chelan in late July. Rodeo is the only major competitive sport that originated from an actual working lifestyle. The two-day Lake Chelan Rodeo, part of the Pro-West Rodeo Association circuit, runs July 24 and 25. It includes all of the standard rodeo events - calf roping, saddle and bareback bronc riding, team roping, steer wrestling, barrel racing and of course, bull riding. This year’s rodeo begins Friday evening at 8 p.m. with the grand entry. The Chelan Rodeo Queen and visiting rodeo royalty will welcome the crowd before the events kick off. Youngsters have an opportunity to get into the ring and take part in the excitement during the annual chicken race Friday night. Children win cash prizes by chasing down one of the wild chickens released during the event. Kids 12 and younger are welcome to participate. The rodeo’s “slack” will be Saturday. “Slack” is made up of rodeo events with too many cowboys signed up to run during the main competition. On Saturday morning, July 25, the Chelan Rustlers Club offers a real cow-

boy breakfast at the rodeo grounds from 6 to 10 a.m. Saturday night a new batch of professional cowboys and cowgirls will try to beat Friday night’s participants for a share of the prize money. The Lake Chelan Rodeo offers plenty of excitement for rodeo fans from the opening ceremonies to the final snortin’, twistin’, buckin’ bull ride. For more information, call 682-9027.

Bird Watching

The best places for birding in the Lake Chelan Valley can be found with the help of Audubon Washington’s colorful “Great Washington State Birding Trail” map, available at the Visitor Center in Chelan. Lake Chelan State Park on the south shore is busy in the summer but is a recommended birding spot in the fall and spring. Find thrushes, nuthatches and sparrows, as well as waterfowl. Chelan Riverwalk Park, right in town, is home to a number of species, including swallows that nest under the bridges. Wapato Lake Park near Manson is good for beginning birders. Thirty-five species of water birds have been spotted there, along with sandpipers, great blue herons and quail. Viewing is best in the spring and fall. For a unique birding experience, make the trek uplake to Stehekin. The bird watching is good spring, summer or fall. Look for hummingbirds, tanagers,

The hatchery staff takes the time to show visitors around and answer questions Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Group tours are also available by appointment. For more information, call the hatchery at 682-5514. The Lake Chelan Sportsman’s Association is spearheading an effort to redesign Beebe Creek, just across U.S. Highway 97A, to create better spawning conditions. The area is also being developed for wildlife viewing and education.

Chelan Fish Hatchery

The Chelan Fish Hatchery, located on the Columbia River north of Chelan Falls, raises rainbow and cutthroat trout for stocking purposes in Chelan, Kittitas, Douglas and Okanogan counties. Lake Chelan alone receives 100,000 cutthroat trout from the local hatchery. The hatchery raises other trout species, which are

Douglas County’s Wells Dam, 15 minutes north of Chelan on Highway 97, provides hydroelectric power to Douglas County residents. Like much of the region running on hydro power, residents enjoy electricity so inexpensive that it costs less than the average national wholesale price. Wells Dam has a major fish hatchery operated by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. Approximately 3 million juvenile salmon and steelhead raised at the facility every year are re-

Rocky Reach

Rocky Reach Dam, 30 miles south of Chelan, draws in tens of thousands of visitors each year. The hydroelectric project is one of three dams that supply power to the Lake Chelan area and the rest of Chelan County. It also provides an education to visitors, who can tour free-of-charge, the powerhouse, the museum, the art displays and the fishviewing windows. Catch an informational video in the theater or snap a postcard-quality photo from the balcony, which offers a view of the dam, Lake Entiat and the Columbia River. Breakfast, lunch and snacks are available at Alexandria’s Café. Catch the exhibit on the utility’s other major dam, Rock Island. Visitors can also enjoy a scavenger hunt, a display of Gyotaku fish printing, and - a crowd favorite - fish viewing at the adult fish ladder and the juvenile fish bypass. Stretch your legs and walk the 30 acres of award-winning lawns and gardens. A playground will keep the youngest family members happy. The Visitor Center is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through Thanksgiving. If you want a guided tour of Rocky Reach, call 661-4960. To reserve a park shelter, call 663-7522 or check out www.chelanpud.org. 13

Uplake Chelan

For a truly special experience, get away from the beaten paths at the lower end of the lake and visit Holden Village or Stehekin, located in the spectacular North Cascades National Park. Both serve as starting points or restful retreats for hikers and backpackers, outdoor vacation destinations with access to boating and fishing in the sunny blue waters of Lake Chelan. In their own ways, both provide spiritual relief from the busy “real world.” Learn more about our two uplake villages below.

Stehekin

Stehekin is a small community at the northwest end of Lake Chelan, nestled in a valley in the North Cascade mountains. Its slow pace and old-fashioned lifestyle is due to its remote location – no roads go to Stehekin, so one must either take the Lady of the Lake, (509) 682-4584, or one of her sister boats, or fly uplake on a Chelan Airways float plane (509) 682-5555. The boat ride to Stehekin and back can be very enjoyable. Many people use binoculars to scan the hillsides for bears, goats and interesting rock formations. The shoreline is dotted with cabins. The area abounds with recreational opportunities. About three and a half miles from the boat landing are 312-foot Rainbow Falls and historic Buckner Orchard. Get to these popular sites by walking, biking or taking a bus. Tickets for a day tour are available on-board the

Lady Express. Stehekin is a remote area for people, but not for animals. Wildlife is all around, so fishing and bird watching are popular. Boating, camping, river rafting and horseback riding are some of the other activities possible in Stehekin. The Stehekin Valley is well known for the number of hiking trails of all levels of difficulty along the lake and throughout the valley. The public lands in the valley are administered by the National Park Service and lie within the boundaries of the North Cascades National Park Complex. The NPS maintains the Golden West Visitor Center with maps, trail guides and shuttle bus information. Inside the visitor center is an art gallery with changing displays. Through a lease agreement with the park service, accommodations are available at Stehekin Landing Resort, formerly known as Stehekin Lodge. For more information about the Stehekin Landing Resort or

Holden Village

Holden Village is a year-round ecumenical Christian center for renewal. It is located in the mountains 12 miles inland from the ferry landing at Lucerne on Lake Chelan. Holden welcomes everyone. The 2009 summer program runs from April 1 through mid-September. Sessions

include Bible study, theology, ethics, the environment, literature and family issues. Children’s programs are also offered. Even though Holden is situated in a remote area, getting there is as easy as taking a Lake Chelan Boat Company vessel from Chelan or Fields Point. Visitors will be met at Lucerne. Reservations to stay at the village are required. During the summer season, the Holden Village bus picks up guests arriving by boat at Lucerne daily from May 1 through Oct. 31. Telephone service is not available in Holden Village, so individuals interested in visiting should write to Holden Village, HC00 - Stop 2, Chelan, WA 98816. Registration forms, as well as information about rates and other aspects of Holden Village, are also available on its Web site, www.holdenvillage.org. Those just wishing to pass through are welcome, but should write to request a space on the bus from Lucerne.

Recreation

Chelan has everything for the visitor in search of summer fun, from boating and waterskiing to swimming, sailing, fishing or sunbathing on the sandy beaches of Lake Chelan. Hiking opportunities range from the family-friendly to the truly adventurous. Chelan also offers some of the best conditions for hang gliding and paragliding from atop the world-famous Chelan Butte – now that’s adventure! For the more relaxed crowd, take a historical walking tour of downtown Chelan, check out the many murals and get a glimpse of the turn-of-the-century West. Plan to take in a classic car show, sailing regatta, hydroplane races or attend a concert in Riverwalk Park. Whatever recreational activities you enjoy, Chelan has it all.

Swimming

Lake Chelan is 50.5 miles of some of the nation’s cleanest water. A number of major beaches in both Chelan and Manson are favorite swimming holes for locals and visitors alike, but any area free of boats and other water traffic is good for swimming in the lake’s breathtaking blue to turquoise water. The Lake Chelan State Park is an excellent place to swim, camp, hike and boat. Just below the Best Western Lakeside Lodge on the south shore, Lakeside Park offers shaded, grassy spaces and easy access to the water.

shore Drive. Beautifully landscaped, this secluded park slopes down to the inviting water and includes park benches and barbecues available for public use. Remember to play it safe. Accidents occur on the lake every year because people aren’t aware of their surroundings or do not know how to swim. Don’t dive into the lake if you don’t know how deep the water is. Don’t boat without a flotation device, and don’t go into deep water unless you’re an accomplished swimmer.

Boating

Right in town, along State Route 150 (Manson Road), Don Morse Memorial Park is a popular destination for swimmers and sunbathers. Don Morse Park also provides several amenities for those who seek a quick break from the water – a putting green, a go-cart racetrack, basketball courts, a sand volleyball pit, tennis courts, and a skate park. Don Morse Park is adjacent to the Lakeshore RV Park, so it’s convenient for the camping and RV crowd. Seven miles up Lake Chelan’s north shore, Manson is the last town in the Valley accessible by car. In downtown Manson, near the boat moorage, Manson Bay Park is less populated than the swimming areas in Chelan. Manson Bay features an enclosed swimming area with a dock and two lifeguards. Follow signs farther up the back roads of Manson, and you will be led to one of the Lake Chelan Valley’s best kept secrets – Willow Point Park, just off Lake-

More than 60 percent of Lake Chelan’s shoreline can be reached only by boat as it extends into the North Cascades National Park or wilderness areas. So it’s no surprise that many launch docks, boat rentals and tours are available to anyone who has an urge to explore on the wild side. Take part in paragliding, or rent a personal or family-sized boat for the day. Kayaking and canoing are options for those wishing to take their time and enjoy the more peaceful, secluded areas of the lake.

the lake. Boat washing must be done on shore to assure that no chemical cleaners enter the lake. Exhaust systems must meet legal requirements and be in good working order. To find out how to dispose of used oil and other chemicals, call 682-4663.

River Rafting

Those who seek their thrills on the water may find Lake Chelan’s pace a little slow. In that case, a trip to the head of the lake is in order. That is where you’ll find the remote village of Stehekin and the white waters of the Stehekin River. Rafters will use Bullion Launch to enter the river. The course runs downstream from there, 10 miles to the river’s end. The American Canoe Association rates this stretch of rapids as Class 2, but the outfitters who lead the tours call it a 2-plus. The Stehekin is faster than most Class 2 rivers and has a number of hazardous log jams. The second half of the ride is considerably smoother, but boaters still need to

look out for woody debris. To confirm your whitewater plans, contact the Stehekin Valley Ranch at 682-4677.

Canoeing and Kayaking

Lake Chelan offers the canoeist or kayaker an opportunity to escape the

Pump Out Stations

Lakeshore Marina, Old Mill Park, Manson Bay Marina, Fields Point Landing, Stehekin. Boats can be fueled up at several locations around Lake Chelan. Remember to be careful and not overfill or spill gas or oil into the water while fueling. Rules of the water – To keep the lake clean, it is important to dispose of milfoil, a weed that interferes with swimming, boating and fishing. Milfoil is carried on the propellers or other parts of boats being transported from one body of water to another. The weed looks feathery, with at least a dozen pairs of leaflets. Make sure you remove and properly dispose of all plant material from your boat and trailer before they hit the water. Carry a bag to collect your trash, and dispose of it when you return to shore. This applies to sewage as well – bring a port-a-potty or make sure your holding tank is well sealed. Sewage should leave your boat only at a pump-out station. Bilge water is not to be pumped into 17

pressures of modern-day life for a few hours or even a few days. In the early morning and late afternoon, when the lake is calm and the majority of the watercraft is off the lake, a paddle around the lower basin is a unique and calming experience. For a more adventurous paddler, heading uplake in a canoe or kayak is the experience of a lifetime. The busy boat traffic gives way to quiet wild beauty still largely unknown to most visitors. There are a number of campgrounds accessible by water for camping along the way. Be sure to get through the narrows before the winds kick up in the afternoon and makes maneuvering difficult. The Columbia River offers another paddling opportunity between the Wells Dam and Rocky Reach Dam. Beavers, eagles, ducks, geese and other fowl have made this area their home. There are many boat launching places in this area, making it ideal for long or short paddling trips.

Personal Watercraft

With such an expansive surface, Lake Chelan is in no danger of running out of room for boaters. All the same, there are those who prefer the motorboats 18

smaller, more maneuverable cousin, the personal watercraft. You need not even own a PWC, as several rental agencies offer them here. As for every other vehicle on the water, certain regulations govern the operation of personal watercraft. Most importantly, a Coast Guard-approved life jacket must be worn during operation. Drivers must be at least 16 years of age, and minors must ride with an adult. You must be 18 to rent a personal watercraft. Water-skiing and other towing is prohibited from PWCs. The only exception is when the craft’s manufacturer has rated it for three passengers and an observer is on board to keep an eye on the person being towed.

Fishing

Fishing Lake Chelan can mean an allday excursion with one of the Valley’s fishing guides, or dropping a line off the dock between Campbell’s Resort and the old bridge. The biggest catches are the plentiful lake trout and the prized Chinook salmon. Stocking programs release about 200,000 cutthroat trout in Lake Chelan. There is no limit on lake trout, or Mackinaw, which are in season every day of the year. The state’s largest-ever lake trout was pulled out of Lake Chelan, weighing in at 35 pounds, 7 ounces. Due to dwindling numbers, Chinook fishing is limited to the month of May.

There’s an effort underway to increase Chinook in Lake Chelan, but wildlife officials say not to expect to see results for another three to four years The Kokanee, which are landlocked sockeye salmon, congregate in the waters near Lakeside Park in April and May and make their way to Mill Bay near Manson by late June, before heading farther uplake. They are also in season year-round. The prize fishing in Roses and Wapato Lakes near Manson may be more of a secret. Each of those lakes gets about 150 jumbo rainbow trout every spring. You’ll also catch catfish, crappie, bass, brown trout and bluegill on Roses. Other fish found in Wapato Lake are bluegill, perch, crappie and largemouth bass. The Columbia River and its tributaries north of Lake Chelan offer steelhead and Chinook salmon fishing in season. Detailed regulations are found in the Fish and Wildlife Department’s fishing rules pamphlet, which is available online at wdfw.wa.gov. Fishing licenses and information are available at Kelly’s Ace Hardware in Chelan. In Stehekin, McGregor Mountain Outdoor Supply sells two-day fishing passes. Fishing tackle can be purchased at Pat and Mike’s uplake from Chelan on Highway 97A. Those staying on the south shore will find this stop convenient. A great kids’ fishing event happens every Mother’s Day – it’s the ClarkKearney Memorial Kids Fishing Derby at the Lake Chelan Golf Course. The pond is stocked with trout, and every child between the ages of one and 14 who reels in a fish gets a prize. This year, the derby is Sunday, May 11, in the afternoon. The derby is sponsored by the Lake Chelan Sportsman’s Association.

a stretch of the community’s Lakeside Trail or exploring the many loop trails at Echo Ridge, visitors will find many op-

portunities to stretch their legs and take in a breath of truly fresh air. The afternoon temperatures can get fairly high, so we recommend morning or evening walks. At Echo Ridge you can watch the sun set on the Cascade Mountains. The back roads offer great views, little traffic and plenty of solitude. Depending on the season, walkers can take in the sweet smell of fruit blossoms in the spring, soak up the summer warmth or marvel at the one-of-a-kind smell of apples ripening on the trees in early fall. Some favorite walking routes are the old Gorge Road, the face of Chelan Butte and the many U.S. Forest Service roads and trails around the lake. Check with the Chelan Ranger District or the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce for maps. There are more options uplake, at North Cascades National Park. From Stehekin, walk through the dense forest surrounding Agnes Creek Trail. Hike as high as 5,700 feet from the Company Creek Trail, or catch your breath by taking in the awe-inspiring beauty of the waterfalls in the Horseshoe Basin on the popular Cascade Pass Trail. If a shorter, in-town stroll is more your speed, the Lake Chelan Historical Society provides a brochure to guide you on a historical walking tour of downtown Chelan. Find out what that apartment building or that realty office originally housed. You’ll be in for some surprises! Visit the Chamber’s Visitor Center in Chelan and pick up the historical walking tour brochure. Also, check www. cometothelake.com for safety tips.

Mountain Biking

In the summer, mountain bikers take over the same trails populated by crosscountry skiers in the winter. Most offroad bicycle enthusiasts find themselves at Echo Ridge Nordic Ski Area after the snow melts. Echo Ridge offers more than 17 miles of trail, including some single-track runs. It is a great place for the family to ride, but even the most advanced mountain biker can find a loop to challenge his or her aerobic fitness. For more details on Echo Ridge, pick up a mountain bike trail map at the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce. Outside of Echo Ridge, the Valley offers plenty of exciting mountain bike rid-

On the north shore of Lake Chelan, the Summit Trail that leads in to the Chelan/Sawtooth Wilderness is also “epic.” Biking is a great way to witness nature in action. Be cautious of rattlesnakes and mountain lions in the lower basins. The Lake Chelan Valley also has a bicycle club, Chelan Valley Cyclists. News and rides are posted on its Web site, www.bikelakechelan.com. If you enjoy bike touring, the Dam2Dam bike ride held the last Saturday of September might be what you’re looking for. It is scheduled for Sept. 26 this year, starting from the Lincoln Rock State Park and taking cyclists on 25-, 50- or 100-mile routes along the scenic Columbia River. More details at mikeutley.org. continue growing in 2009. Wine tasting is just one dimension of the agri-tourism experience here. Families can find U-pick berry farms, fruit stands, cider works and other diverse shopping experiences. Twelve years ago who could imagine that Washington would become the next

in the

breathtaking wine-touring country to rival Napa Valley? With serene vineyards stretching over rolling hills, it’s no wonder the area is one of the fastest-growing wine regions in the world. The wine industry in the entire state is roaring. Six years ago, the state had about 125 of them. Today, Hank Manriquez, executive director for the Cascade Foothills Farmland Association,

V ineyard O pen M ay

said that number now surpasses 500, with half a billion dollars in sales. In Chelan County and the Upper Valley, the growth has been proportionally identical. From the handful of wineries 10 years ago, now more than 40 wineries, tasting rooms and vineyards dot the county’s landscape. Most wineries are located in loose clusters in Lake Chelan, Leavenworth and Wenatchee, in a region famous for

Agri-tourism four beautiful seasons of recreation. Our wine region specializes in handmade boutique wines. Most wineries are family operations, making 500 to 800 cases a year. The largest wineries make nearly 5,000 cases a year, including Lake Chelan Winery and St. Laurent in Wenatchee. The county turns out nearly 60,000 cases a year altogether, Manriquez said. The area shares the same latitude as premier wine regions such as northern France. The grapes thrive here under the 17 hours of sun per day, two more hours than California’s prime growing region. Washington state is the second largest wine producer in the nation. The area’s fall freezes allow winemakers to produce a sweet, rich ice wine that few regions can accommodate. What makes Chelan County wines unique when compared to French, Chilean, California wines and wines from Walla Walla is the industry’s newness when compared to its competitors, Manriquez said.

“It’s in development stages,” he said. “And people are always looking for something new.” Valley winemakers experiment with both white and red varieties with equal curiosity and passion. It’s too early to say which kinds of wines will establish a reputation in our region. Each variety continues to garner awards and high marks at international wine competitions. Don’t miss the wine stomping during the summer crush period or the wineand-chocolate winter tastings. Wine tastings are scheduled year ‘round and many wineries are open seven days a week. The most popular times to tour the vineyards are in early summer when the buds begin to break and in late summer when the grapes are at their fullest. You don’t have to leave the kids at home to enjoy area wineries. A complete list of wineries and tasting rooms in Chelan, Douglas and Grant Counties can be found at visitwashingtonwineries.com or visitwashingtonfarms. com.

Day-Use Parks

There are plenty of campgrounds and parks for visitors to enjoy. Summer in the Lake Chelan Valley is wonderful! The lake and the surrounding mountains, hills and orchards provide the beauty, and the parks provide the places to stay and play. The Lake Chelan park system provides day-use parks as well as campgrounds for overnight stays.

Don Morse Memorial Park is where the City of Chelan meets the lake. It opens at 10 a.m. and closes at 10 p.m., Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. surrounding region. Fields Point is a departure point for people traveling uplake aboard one of the ferries. The landing is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, from Memorial Day through Labor Day. As part of the license issued to the Chelan PUD for the Chelan Dam, habitat restoration work must be done along the river adjacent to the powerhouse. The work will help create a better area for fish spawning in the future. For more information on either of the Chelan Falls parks, call (509) 661-4551 or visit the PUD Web site, www.chelanpud.org.

Lake Chelan Visitor Guide 2009

History Lake Chelan Valley

Exploring fur traders were the first white men to see the Lake Chelan Valley in 1814, and the settling of the Lake Chelan Valley began about 1880. The first homesteaders were the Wapato Indian family from Entiat. 1886: The area was opened by the U.S. government to white settlement. The first white settlers were Ignatius Navarre, his wife and baby girl. 1888: The first sawmill, store and bunkhouse were built. 1889: The first steamer on Lake Chelan - “The Belle of Chelan.” 1890s: Miners came into the valley. 1892: The railroad from the south reached Wenatchee. 1900: The first Lady of the Lake passenger boat began service. It operated until 1915. 1927: A dam was built and the lake was raised 28 feet to provide hydroelectric power.

Chelan

1879: Camp Chelan was established by the U.S. Army to control reported Indian unrest. It was abandoned in 1880 because of difficulties in maintaining the remote camp. 1889: The town of Chelan was laid out by a surveyor for the federal government. Streets were wide to allow for wagons to turn around. 1889: The First Congregational Church of Chelan, later the Little Stone Church, was organized in Lakeside, then a separate city, where Lakeside Park is now. This was the first of many churches to spring up around the lake. 1889 or ‘92: The first school was started. 1890: The first two-frame houses were built. The population was about 200. 1890: A U.S. Post Office was established. 1891: The first newspaper was the Chelan Leader. It moved from Chelan Falls in 1892, a year after its establishment. 1901: Campbell’s Hotel opened. 1907: Chelan High School’s first senior

class graduated. 1945: The first floatplane flight to Stehekin by Chelan Airways.

Manson

1879: The U.S. government set up the Moses Reservations, but in 1881 and 1884 the government made new arrangements for settling Indians. One was the Indian Homestead Act, allowing Indians to file for homesteads in the same manner as white people. Indians from the Entiat area filed for 640-acre allotments in and around Wapato Point, from present-day Green’s Landing to Mill Bay. The area, Wapato Point, was named for the head of the family, Wapato John. 1880: The first apple orchard in the area was planted by Wapato John; irrigation began with efforts to bring water in flumes from Mitchell, Safety Harbor, Poison and Grade Creeks to Antilon and Temple Lakes. 1890: Martin Venneberg settled on Joe Creek, above the Indian allotments. 1911: Peter Wapato and his wife Madeline deeded 346.14 acres to Wapato Irrigation Co., incorporated in 1906, which then developed the town. 1911: Chelan Leader newspaper announced the birth of the new town of Manson on June 22. Manson was named for Manson Backus, one of the initial investors in the town’s development. 1912: The first school was built, and a U.S. Post Office was established. 1921: The town’s first apple blossom festival was held. The first queen was named in 1928. The Manson Apple Blossom Festival still thrives today. 1923: By this time, Manson had added electric lights, a public library and two stores. 1923: The first class graduated from Manson High School.

Chelan Falls

1891: The town was founded and platted. 1891: The Chelan Falls Leader newspaper began. It moved to Chelan in 1892. 1891: A U.S. Post Office was established. 1891: The road between Chelan Falls and Chelan was finished. 1892: The first school opened.

Entiat

1800s: The Entiat Valley was first settled by the Columbia River Chinook Indian Tribe. It was originally named ‘Enteatqua’ which means rapid water. 1896: Chief Silico Saska sold the town site of Entiat to settlers in the area. 1906: The first high school, Union High School was built. 1913: A fire destroyed the old town of Entiat except for six buildings. The town was rebuilt and moved closer to the railroad tracks, which were built in 1914. 1944: The town officially adopted their corporate seal.
