AP Biology Prelab: Cell Respiration

Name

Read over Laboratory 5: Cell Respiration carefully and answer the following: 1. What two processes does the term respiration refer to AND what is their connection? 2. Write the balanced chemical equation for the complete oxidation of glucose. 3. What three measurements could be taken to monitor the rate of respiration? 4. Which will be measured in this experiment? 5. What two independent variables will be tested in terms of their effects on respiration rates? 6. Read over the 5 implications of the ideal gas law and AFTER reading through the rest of the lab, come back and aive the number of the one that best describes the situation in our setup. 7. How will our setup remove the carbon dioxide gas as it is formed? What will be produced? 8. Sketch a respirometer (device for measuring respiration in a small organism) and describe its what features must it have and why? essential characteristics

9. Why do we need a (control) vial with glass beads only? 10. 25 germinating seeds are swollen and take up much more room than 25 dry seeds. How do we make up for the volume difference? Why is this necessary? 11. Why do we submerge the respirometers in water? (two reasons) 12. Why is it important to wait seven minutes before lowering respirometers? 13. Why is it important to wait three more minutes before taking readings? 14. Why is it important to make sure that all pipets are in good reading position from the start? 15. How often will readings be taken, and for how long all together? 16. Predict how the amount of oxygen consumed will change with time. 17. How do you think the respiration rate will be affected by the difference in temperature? Why?

18. How do you think the respiration rate will be affected by germinating vs. dry seeds? Why?
