ISSUE No. 1

connect KENTON CONNECTS WITH RESIDENTS KNA INTERIM chair—Vick y Kirk

It is my pleasure to bring you the first Kenton Connect newsletter! This is just the beginning of our effort to communicate with residents on important issues facing our community. I’d like to personally thank the 32 Kenton Walkers who volunteered to deliver this issue to your door step— our first ever canvassing system in Kenton! Four months ago I became the Kenton Neighborhood Association (KNA) Interim Chair. Within this time I have created a monthly resident email and increased the subscriber list from 50 to 300 residents, created the Kenton Connect quarterly newsletter, produced a marketing campaign to support the restaurants on Denver Avenue and most importantly created the Kenton Walkers delivery group—which will hopefully be my most important legacy as chair. I encourage you to peruse our summer events column, let your voice be heard at the new library site meeting May 29th, and most importantly attend the Annual KNA General Meeting and Open House on June 11th! And please, take time to read the “Kenton Menu” delivered with your newsletter and support our amazing new restaurants on Denver! See you soon.

LAST CHANCE TO WEIGH IN ON THE NEW LIBRARY SITE —MAY 29TH— CHOSEN SITE WILL BE UNVEILED AT THE KNA JUNE 11TH MEETING by BRENDA RAY SCOTT Help Kenton write a new chapter in its book! On Thursday, May 29th at 7:00 pm join Commissioner Jeff Cogen, Director of Libraries Molly Raphael, and the real estate manager Mike Sublett at the Masonic Temple (8130 N. Denver Avenue in downtown Kenton) as they request public feedback on the two finalist sites for the new North Portland library. The search for a library site in Kenton has been narrowed from three locations to two—the site at 2133 N. Argyle and the site at 8226 N. Denver. Because both sites offer benefits, Commissioner Cogen would like the community to weigh in one more time. Please join us to hear the presentation and share your opinions at this final stage. The winner will be announced at the Kenton Neighborhood Association (KNA) General Meeting, Thurs., June 11th also at the Masonic Temple!

SEEKING KENTON WALKERS Join our walking volunteers! Help us deliver newsletters and get some exercise too! Each volunteer delivers to their small section of Kenton. It takes only 1.5 hours, four times per year. We need alternates: email [email protected], or call Vicky at 503.539.2199.

GET YOUR DENVER AVENUE CARTS STREETSCAPE A ROLLIN’ UPDATE

Recently, the Portland City Council, PDC and the Urban Forestry Commission adopted the recommendations of the Downtown Kenton Denver Streetscape Plan. Construction of the improvements is slated to begin in 2009. The Plan outlines improvements along North Denver Avenue, from Interstate Avenue south to Watts Street, including widened sidewalks, street trees, lighting, benches, storm water planters and public art.

These improvements will help to revitalize the historic Kenton business district— fondly known as Downtown Kenton. Now that a preferred design concept has been selected, the team is currently refining the details of the schematic design through the design and engineering phase. With the help of the Regional Arts & Culture Council, artist and public art consultant Valerie Otani was brought onto the design team and to make recommendations for themes, scale of public art, and potential location of art installations. Because downtown Kenton is surrounded by family housing and parks, a key conceptual element is that the art be interactive and engaging, creating a family-friendly tone. To learn more about the design and construction process, visit with a PDC representative at the Kenton Neighborhood Association Meeting and Open House on June 11th. See event details in calendar at left.

by BRENDA RAY SCOTT Portland’s new residential recycling system gets its carts a rollin’—recycling carts that is. Now being introduced, these new blue recycling roll carts and green yard debris carts will be delivered by haulers in the Kenton neighborhood June and July.

The new four-bin system separates garbage, yard debris, glass and other recyclables.

Here’s how it works: Customers keep one of their yellow recycling bins to use for glass recycling. Slap a label on that says glass. The second yellow bin you may keep for your own use. The really groovy news is that you will put all the other recyclables into the new roll cart, except glass and motor oil. Better yet, you can put plastic tubs such as yogurt and margarine containers, small plastic buckets and plastic nursery pots into the new cart. No need to roll out the cart every collection day if it’s not full. Don’t forget, glass goes in a separate yellow bin. Sorry, plastic bags are not accepted at all in curbside recycling! You can still recycle plastic bags at neighborhood collection points, such as a grocery stores or recycling centers.

Some of you may have learned about the recent increase in burglaries in North Portland and may have concerns about public safety. In reviewing Kenton’s crime statistics for April 2008 in comparison to last year, April 2007, most of the statistics are fairly consistent with a few exceptions illustrated in the chart below. APRIL

Change

Although there have been increases in some areas, there have also been decreases in others. Neighbors and businesses play a crucial role in keeping their neighborhoods safe by contacting police or crime prevention with neighborhood concerns, getting to know one another through block watches and business watches and continuing to contact police if there is suspicious activity in their neighborhood. If you are interested in more information on block watches, home and vehicle security or other crime prevention information, please feel free to contact me at 503-823-4098, or [email protected].
