Kay's Simple Colorplay Shawl Finished Size: 34” length x 70” width

MATERIALS Dk or worsted weight wool yarn, approximately 850 yards Circular knitting needle, size 10 (6.00 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge Markers Gauge: In garter stitch (knit every row), 14 sts and 28 rows = 4” Note: Shawl is worked from the back of neck to the point.

BODY Cast on 5 sts loosely. Row 1: Knit across. Note: Increases are made by knitting into the front and back of the stitch indicated. Row 2 (Right side): Increase 4 times, K1: 9 sts. Note: Mark Row 2 as right side. Row 3: Knit across. Helpful Hint: I always place a safety pin marker on the edge of my right side row. When I see the safety pin, I know that this is the row that has all the increases. As I work my rows, I move it up. Row 4: Increase, K2, increase, place marker, increase, K2, increase, K1: 13 sts. Row 5: Knit across. Row 6: Increase, knit across to within one stitch of center marker, increase, SM (slip marker), increase, knit across to last 2 sts, increase, K1: 17 sts. Repeat Rows 5 and 6, 72 times, then repeat Row 5 once more: 305 sts. Do not finish off. BOTTOM BORDER Note: This border is worked perpendicular to the bottom edge of the shawl. Each K2 tog at the end of Row 1 decreases the number of sts along the bottom edge of the shawl. When using a variegated or hand painted yarn, it gives a color block element to the edge. Turn; with right side facing, cast 3 sts onto left needle. Row 1 (Right side): K3, K2 tog.

Row 2: Turn; K4. Row 3: Turn; K3, K2 tog. Repeat Rows 2 and 3 across bottom edge of Shawl until you come to the marker, ending by working Row 2. Work Corner as follows: Turn; with right side facing, cast 3 sts onto left needle. Row 1 (Right side): K3, K2 tog. Row 2: Turn; K4. Row 3: Turn; K3, K2 tog. Repeat Rows 2 and 3 across remaining half on bottom edge of Shawl until all the sts have been used, ending by working Row 2; do not finish off. TOP EDGE Foundation Row: With right side facing, knit across the 4 remaining sts of Bottom Border, picking up 3 sts for EACH 2 garter ridges along first side of Top Edge on Body of Shawl to cast on sts, pick up 5 sts along cast on edge, continue picking up 3 sts for EACH 2 garter ridges along other side of Top Edge on Body of Shawl to cast on sts of Bottom Border, pick up 4 sts along cast on edge of Bottom Border. Note: I have not given a stitch count here. It does not really matter if you are exact. As long as you have picked up 3 sts for EACH 2 garter ridges along the edge, it will work out. You should have approximately 243 sts (4 border sts, 115 sts to cast on, 5 cast on sts, 115 sts to border cast on, 4 border sts). Next Row: Knit across. Work Corner as follows: Turn; with right side facing, cast 3 sts onto left needle. Row 1 (Right side): K3, K2 tog. Row 2: Turn; K4. Row 3: Turn; K3, K2 tog. Repeat Rows 2 and 3 across the sts on Top Edge of Shawl until all the sts have been used, ending by working Row 3. Bind off all sts in knit. These instructions are intended for the beginning knitter. Every effort has been made to insure that these instructions are accurate. ©2009, Kay Meadors/Naturalstateknits, [email protected].
