A nationwide petition was begun sometime ago and SMBA members were asked for their support. Walt Crider mailed our signatures to the Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee. SMBA members had an opportunity to sign the petition at the Dean Sapp concert in May. Thank you for supporting this endeavor.

Nominations for SMBA officers will be opened at the July meeting in Mechanicsburg and can be received up to the August meeting. Any member desiring to run for office can be nominated by submitting their name to the secretary or at a monthly meeting. The election will be held in October 2009. A new election process to be announced in June, if approved by the membership in July, will allow ballots to be included in the newsletter. It is hopeful that this change will allow all members an equal opportunity to participate in the SMBA electoral process. Seven Mountains Bluegrass Association “Hornpipe” is published by the Seven Mountains Bluegrass Association Inc., which is a non-profit organization. The SMBA mails this quarterly newsletter to the SMBA membership, music associations, other non-profit organizations, promoters, radio and print media at no charge. INSIDE THE SMBA THE PRESIDENT’S

MESSAGE

Walt Crider

Hi and welcome to summer. This is our favorite time of the year as there is plenty of festivals and outdoor shows to attend. An outdoor event you don't want to miss is our Seven Mountains picnic on August 15th. It will be at Allenberry as in the past. See more information in the newsletter. Our new monthly meeting/jam session format is proving to be a success. Come to one of our meetings at First United Methodist Church in Mechanisburg and join in the fun! Next year's concert series is a winner. Some returning groups will be on our stage and some new as well. Many thanks to the music committee, and especially Jon Raemore for his tireless efforts to make this a great lineup. Our recording secretary, Dick Neff, will be leaving the area this summer to live near his family in Vienna, Virginia. We would like to thank Dick for all the efforts he has put into our organization. His talents as a recording secretary will be missed by the club greatly. Best of luck Dick and I'm sure you will meet a lot of new friends to pick bluegrass with.

ARE YOU READY! It’s that time of year when SMBA members, guests, and bluegrass fans prepare for the Annual SMBA Picnic held at Allenberry in Boiling Springs, Pennsylvania. This is the largest event sponsored by the SMBA members. Each year proves to be a challenge in exceeding the previous year’s festivities and we’re inviting you, your family and friends, to be a part of this special day. August 15, 2009 will be a day for bluegrass fans to unwind and share a special day together. It is our sincere hope that you’ll join us for the 6th Annual SMBA Picnic. As always, the cost of the picnic is underwritten by the SMBA treasury and raffle ticket sales. The actual cost of a picnic ticket is more than what is charged to members. It is just one of the many benefits of membership in the SMBA. And, while the price of picnic tickets has increased slightly, raffle tickets are priced the same as in previous years. Raffle ticket sales are important, and, actually make up quite a bit of the short fall to hold the picnic. In addition, it provides for some great prizes. Please help support bluegrass music and the SMBA by selling raffle tickets. New at this year’s picnic; Some of our talented musicians will be holding workshop classes on playing guitar, banjo, mandolin, and fiddle. If you wish to attend a workshop class please contact Bill Aldinger at (717) 728-9039 or e-mail [email protected].

Visit our website www.sevenmountainsbluegrass.org as it is updated regularly. One page I especially like in the link page that can take you to countless videos, past and present, of bluegrass performances. It becomes addictive to watch bands and individuals available.

All musicians, of all skill levels, are encouraged to play onstage to entertain our guests. You can also join others in the field where many jams are held. As always, horseshoes, trout fishing, and volleyball are available.

Answer to previous trivia question: Flatt and Scruggs chose their band name Foggy Mountain Boys after the song "Foggy Mountain Top" recorded by the Carters.

Hope to see you at the picnic. Come out and enjoy the great bluegrass music, great food, door prizes, the raffle, the creekside setting, and the fellowship with other bluegrass fans.

Trivia question: What songwriter, who lived to be 101, wrote these great tunes? Nobody's Darling But Mine, Suppertime, Where The Old Red River Flows. (He also had time to be in politics.)

By now you should have received your Picnic/Raffle letter in the mail. For more raffle tickets please contact Bill Aldinger at (717) 728-9039.

Walt

Thank you, Bill Aldinger Picnic Chairman

INSIDE THE SMBA The Scholarship Committee has reviewed the applications we received and have approved the following awards of $135 each:

Each year, the SMBA awards several music scholarships to folks of any age desiring to further their skills in playing or singing bluegrass music. The notice is always made on our website and in the SMBA Hornpipe publication, along with an application and rules governing the selection process. After careful reviewing by the SMBA Scholarship committee, awards are made to individuals who meet the requirements. This year, the committee were SMBA members, Patricia Kline and Mike Lebo. On behalf of the SMBA Board, thank you for your efforts in helping to promote bluegrass music. Congratulations to the 2009 scholarship recipients. It is our desire to help everyone in furthering their skills in bluegrass music. SMBA annual membership dues pay for this valuable educational opportunity.

INSIDE THE SMBA

Central Pennsylvania has for many years been a hot bed of activity for bluegrass music and talented musicians. One of the areas best and most talented is Dick Neff. While he has been active in bluegrass circles here since the mid 1980’s music has always been a part of his life. Dick’s father, Harold Neff, played guitar for Fiddlin’ Dave & The Sage Riders many years prior. The band played mostly western swing music and were very popular at many square dances throughout the area. Harold had wanted him to learn how to play guitar, but it was the love of the banjo that drew Dick’s attention. At the age of twenty-seven he purchased his first banjo from Montgomery Ward. A Silvertone model, Dick used a piece of bone to fashion his own bridge. Self taught, Dick would sit for hours playing his LP’s at slow speed and lifting the needle arm to pause. (A little different from today’s CD pause button, isn’t it?) Living in South Carolina for a brief time and attending graduate school in 1970, he discovered Earl Scruggs tabulature to aid his playing by ear. Today, Dick is a veritable walking encyclopedia of bluegrass banjo and old-timey tunes.

During his presidency, the SMBA jams were moved from Fishing Creek to First UMC in Mechanicsburg. Our Constitution, by-laws, non-profit and tax exempt status were all updated. The SMBA shows were moved to the Goodwill Fire Hall in York, and a Music Committee was appointed to schedule bands for the shows. SMBA membership, show attendance and the treasury increased dramatically. In 1985 Dick formed the group The Grace Notes a popular band featuring Laurie Yost, Dick’s son, Alex, Greg Rohrer, and Steve Ressler. The cast of characters may have changed over the years to feature musicians like James Good, Jean Snyder, Patricia Kline, Walt Crider and others, but the music was always top rate, playing a mix Gospel and secular music. They released two CD’s, “The Old Homeplace”, and “Trying To Get Your Attention”. A second band started in 2000 called the Stringtown Skyscrapers was originally a trio featuring Bob Bishard on guitar and Jean Snyder on bass. After the Grace Notes disbanded, Nelson Steffy joined the band, playing fiddle and mandolin. Named for the acoustic string music and Jean’s stand-up bass towering over everyone like a skyscraper, the S.S. play dozens of venues throughout the year. They are known for their tight vocal harmonies and lively instrumentals playing a mix of traditional bluegrass, a gospel repertoire, fiddle tunes, banjo tunes, and contemporary string music. The band also enjoys taking songs made popular throughout the past century and playing them in the bluegrass style. Dick and Ava want to live closer to their daughter and grandchildren in Northern Virginia. They are a wonderful couple and they will be dearly missed by everyone. Both Dick and Ava expressed that it is hard to leave so many friends.

By 1973, he and his lovely wife Ava moved back to Central Pennsylvania and Dick began teaching at the Cumberland-Perry Vo-Tech School. From 1987 through 1998 he taught at Messiah College in Mechanicsburg. In addition to his love for bluegrass music, Dick is an avid artist. His paintings have been featured at several gallery and arts festivals throughout the area. As a former president of the Seven Mountains Bluegrass Association, Dick served five consecutive terms from 1999 to 2003 and made some remarkable changes to the organization to keep it afloat.

www.sevenmountainsbluegrass.org

Dick and Ava enjoy retirement with music, painting, gardening, and playing tennis.

Friendship is treasured, and knowing Dick and Ava as I do, it won’t be long until they’ve touched new hearts in Northern Virginia.

SMBA MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Twenty year old, Russ Carson of Mechanicsburg became infatuated with learning to play the five string banjo at age nine after watching a PBS television show with Earl Scruggs playing with some other “super pickers”. His parents recorded the show for him, and Russ watched the banjo breaks over and over, finally declaring his earnest desire to learn to play. As his father, I’ve crafted handmade banjos and played fiddle and clawhammer banjo since the early 70’s, and as a result Russ was exposed to a non-ending string of jams and traditional musical events while growing up. Russ took banjo lessons from Nev Jackson from age nine until he was about seventeen years old. Russ played banjo and guitar in Nev’s Nev Jackson on guitar, Rachael Bailey youth bluegrass on fiddle, Sara Molitoris on bass and band, Ironwood Russ on banjo. Drive, for several years. An SMBA scholarship allowed Russ to attend Jackson’s summer Pennsylvania Bluegrass Academy camp where Russ made some musical friends that he still enjoys playing with today. As he was learning to play, Russ had the opportunity to meet and be exposed to a wide variety of players of different banjo styles, each of whom has had an impact on his own playing style, which is mostly “by ear”, as opposed to tab style learning. This included spending time with some of the great banjo players located in our region. Russ had lessons and mentoring sessions with Chris Warner, Tom Adams, and Mike Munford, each of whom had quite an impact on his playing along with what he learned from Nev. Page 6

During a five year period in his teens, Russ and I went to a number of music camps such as: Maryland Banjo Academy, Banjo Camp North, and Kaufman Kamp. At these camps, Russ met and learned from, and in some cases became friends with, other well known players, such as: Jens Kruger, Bill Keith, Tony Trischka, and Alan Munde, among others.

Russ playing with Bill Keith, left, Banjo Camp North in 2006.

During the past several years, Russ has attended the Clifftop and Galax festivals where he has been exposed to some great traditional musicians. I am is still very involved with custom banjo heel carvings, and pearl and metal engraving work, often working with other banjo builders. This has provided Russ with the opportunity to meet and befriend a number of well known banjo builders from across the country, such as: Chuck and Tanya Ogsbury (OME Banjos), Will Fielding (Fielding Banjos), Bob Anderson, and Gary Price. [email protected]

SMBA MEMBER SPOTLIGHT, continued In the last several years Russ has been fortunate to place within the top three positions at several contests on bluegrass and clawhammer banjo as well as flat-picking guitar. These included some first place finishes at the Deer Creek contest and a second place finish in clawhammer banjo during a finals round at the first Old Time Banjo Festival Contest held in Washington, DC where he was happy to beat his father!

L-R: Russ on banjo, West Virginia state champ fiddler Jake Krack, Glen Carson on second fiddle, and Micah Dunn on mandolin.

Along with finishing his first hand built dreadnought guitar project, Russ’s major musical goal for 2009 was to find a touring bluegrass band to play in to gain that experience. Recently he had the opportunity to audition for and was offered the banjo position for the bluegrass band, Gold Heart.

Russ has also been influenced by some great clawhammer and fiddle playing friends of mine, such as Reed Martin. All of these experiences have resulted in Russ developing a real passion for traditional music. His primary focus is for bluegrass, but he’s had a healthy exposure to traditional fiddle tunes as well. Although he has taken some ribbing from his peers at times, Russ is continuing to press ahead to learn and expand his banjo playing, and most recently has been working hard to become proficient on clawhammer banjo, flat-picking guitar, and some mandolin and bass.

Russ with Gold Heart in Florida, May of 2009, in about 100 degrees, and playing right off the beach.

Russ on guitar, Glen Carson on clawhammer banjo, and Todd Clewell on fiddle at the Deer Creek Fiddlers contest in 2007.

Gold Heart is a young, up and coming band based out of northern Virginia, and is comprised of three sisters: Analise, Jocelyn and Shelby and their father, Trent Gold. Analise plays mandolin, Jocelyn-guitar, Shelbyfiddle and Trent-bass. The girls write much of their own music and have some wonderful soulful and bluesy harmonies. Russ is really enjoying having the opportunity to play music with them. Gold Heart has an extensive touring schedule, and Russ is looking forward to a great summer playing bluegrass music with the band.
