December 1, 2009 Hiring Attorney Dear Sir or Madam, I am a first year law student at Chicago-Kent College of Law and am interested in applying for your firm’s summer associate position in patent law. Prior to attending law school, I gained valuable work experience as a mechanical engineer in the automotive and motorsports industries. My passion for cutting-edge technology and design has prompted my desire to enter the field of patent law. After receiving a degree in mechanical engineering from Purdue University, I accepted a position with Motorola, Inc. in their Automotive Engineering Rotational Program. While at Motorola, which was later acquired by Continental AG, I gained product experience from the design conception stage to mass-production manufacturing of powertrain control modules. The experience I gained in product design, computer modeling and simulation, and failure analysis has resulted in an intimate understanding of the product design and development process. This experience has provided me with a firm foundation for assisting clients in prosecuting their patents. In addition to technical experience, I have been proactive in developing my leadership and technical writing skills. While at Purdue, I served on the executive board of the Purdue Student Engineering Foundation and was awarded the lifetime achievement award. At Chicago-Kent, I am serving as the Intellectual Property Law Society’s 1L section representative and as an associate editor of the Journal of Intellectual Property. Prior to joining the Journal of Intellectual Property, I wrote a paper that was published by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to discuss my qualifications in further detail. Please do not hesitate to contact me at
