John Keats was the first son of a stable keeper. His parents both died when he was younger. He lived with his grandmother until she sold him to a couple who made him the apprentice to a surgeon. He gave up his medical career in 1814 to become a poet. Keats first poem was published in a

Keats received negative feedback on his first few poems. In 1818, John Keats moved to Hampstead Heath in Scotland. There he met a 16-year old girl by the name of Fanny. He found her completely attractive and fell in love. He soon after started writing his poems about love.

Interesting Facts  John

Keats worked in the shadows of past poets particularly Milton, Spenser, and Shakespeare.  Keats died of tuberculosis in 1821.  He was buried in Rome.  John Keats’ name was not printed on his tombstone.  Instead it read, “Here lies one whose name was writ in water.”

The Human Seasons Four Seasons fill the measure of the year;     There are four seasons in the mind of man: He has his lusty Spring, when fancy clear     Takes in all beauty with an easy span: He has his Summer, when luxuriously     Spring's honied cud of youthful thought he loves To ruminate, and by such dreaming high     Is nearest unto heaven: quiet coves His soul has in its Autumn, when his wings     He furleth close; contented so to look On mists in idleness--to let fair things     Pass by unheeded as a threshold brook. What is the main point of this poem? The main point of this poem is to show that a human is much more than just a human, it shows how the universe is connected everywhere throughout

Literary Analysis 



Keats uses a lot of metaphorical language. He relates the whole poem as stages of the human life process. Keats shows his poem as factual without using irony or humor.

Literary Analysis  Imagery

is used through out the poem The Human Seasons.  Spring is describing childhood.  Summer talks about growing up and maturing.  Autumn is showed as the stage where a person starts to admit that they are becoming older.  Lastly, winter, is shown as death.

Romanticism  Romanticism

is an author’s freedom of thought and expression, and an idealization of nature.  Almost all of Keats’ works are poems of romanticism.  The Human Seasons is so characteristic of romanticism because it relates human life to nature. It shows Keats’ imagination and free thought.

Evergreen of Life 

Prickling bristles of life pierce the air with every wave of a branch. Flowing hairs of life flutter through the air with every wave of an arm. The rough bark of life carries on throughout the four seasons. The smooth skin of life carries on throughout the four seasons. The sapwood of life carries water throughout the body. The veins of life carry blood throughout the body. With our differences aside, the world is a world of life, and we will live together in harmony.
