JAMES E. WEBB INTERNSHIP PROGRAM for MINORITY UNDERGRADUATE JUNIORS, SENIORS AND GRADUATE STUDENTS IN BUSINESS AND PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION

The Office of Research Training and Services awards stipends to support internship projects at the Smithsonian Institution for U.S. minority undergraduate junior, seniors and graduate students in business and public administration. This program was established in honor of the late James. E. Webb, Regent Emeritus and former Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), to promote excellence in the management of not-for-profit organizations. These opportunities are intended to increase participation of minority groups who are underrepresented in the management of scientific and cultural organizations. Interns are placed in offices, museums, and research institutes throughout the Smithsonian Institution. Internships are full-time (40 hours per week), ten week appointments during the summer, fall and spring. Stipend awards are $450 per week, with additional travel allowances offered in some cases. Eligibility and Requirements: When they apply, applicants must be formally enrolled in as an undergraduate (with academic standing as a junior or senior) or in a graduate program of study in business or public administration or have completed their degree within the past four months. Students are generally expected to have an overall G.P.A. of 3.0 or its equivalent. The relevance of an internship at the Smithsonian to the student's academic and career goals will be an important part of the evaluation of an applicant. Applicants should note that it is not possible for the Office of Research Training and Services to arrange an internship project or award a stipend to all qualified candidates. Applying: The attached application form should be submitted to the Office of Research Training and Services with the required essay, résumé and transcripts (unofficial copies are acceptable; graduate students should submit both undergraduate and graduate transcripts). The attached reference forms and a copy of the applicant's essay should be provided to two referees. References in sealed envelopes, signed over the flap, may be submitted by the applicant with the other materials or sent directly by the referees to this office. It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that all required materials are received in time for inclusion in the review of the application. Summer applicants will be notified of decisions by April 15th. Applications must be submitted by the Postmark Deadline of February 1st for Summer or Fall and October 1st for Spring. Smithsonian

The Smithsonian Institution was established in 1846 with funds bequeathed to the United States by James Smithson. The Institution is as an independent trust instrumentality of the United States holding some 140 million artifacts and specimens in its trust for “the increase and diffusion of knowledge.” The Institution is also a center for research dedicated to public education, national service, and scholarship in the arts, sciences, and history. The Smithsonian is composed of seventeen museums and galleries, the National Zoo, and numerous research facilities in the United States and abroad. Nine Smithsonian museums are located on the National Mall between the Washington Monument and the Capitol. A three-level underground building houses two museums and the S. Dillon Ripley Center, which includes the International Gallery, offices, and classrooms. Five other museums and the Zoo are elsewhere in Washington, DC, and both the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum and the National Museum of the American Indian are in New York City.
