About ISABS Indian Society for Applied Behavioural Science (ISABS, http://www.isabs.org/) is a national, non-profit, voluntary, professional organisation, founded in 1972 by a group of behavioural scientists engaged in applying their knowledge and skills for the well-being of persons and organisations. ISABS events focus on human processes and aim at helping people to understand themselves better and discover more creative and satisfying ways of working and relating. ISABS utilises group- and experience-based learning as its main training method. Experiencing, reflecting, hypothesising, conceptualising, and experimenting--rather than lectures--are the chief ingredients in this process of learning. ISABS also trains professionals to facilitate such experiential learning in organisational and societal contexts.
About XIMB Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar (XIMB, http://www.ximb.ac.in/) owes its origin to the initiatives of the Government of Orissa and the Society of Jesus. XIMB has focused on quality and rigorous education, academic infrastructure, technology, and innovation. Human Process Laboratories In a human process laboratory, a group of around 8 to 12 participants work together along with a facilitator to learn about human processes and discover more about themselves, their strengths, their styles, their interpersonal and group interactions, how they perceive and are perceived by others. While this is the primary task, there is no pre-determined agenda and the group uses the “here and now” experience to derive this learning, using each other as a resource. The facilitator helps to create a climate for such learning. There are also some community sessions where members from all the laboratory groups are invited to participate. Facilitators: Facilitators for all the Human Process Laboratories will be Professional Members of ISABS. Co-facilitators may include Interns and other participants in the ISABS’s Professional Development Programme. Fee: Participation fee for residential participants covers accommodation, morning tea, breakfast, mid-morning tea/coffee, lunch, mid-afternoon tea/coffee, dinner, and participation in the laboratory, including programme materials. Participation fee for non-residential participants covers mid-morning tea/coffee, lunch, mid-afternoon tea/coffee, dinner, and participation in the laboratory, including programme materials. Any other expenses incurred by participants during the course of the event would be to their own account and must be settled before departure.
(a) Basic Laboratory on Human Processes (BLHP) (5 days) Objective: To enable the participant to: (i) become aware of his/her patterns of behaviour and its impact on others; (ii) improve his/her effectiveness in interpersonal interactions and derive greater satisfaction from them; (iii) recognise feelings, diagnose needs and improve his/her ability to deal with conflict; and (iv) discover his/her potential to live life meaningfully and effectively. For Whom: The Laboratory is meant for any person interested in developing his/her personal and interpersonal competence. Personnel, HRD, and training professionals, executives in different functional areas, students, doctors, lawyers and other professionals who work with people, faculty in management, psychology, sociology and social work, university and school teachers and persons in rural development, voluntary and social service organisations are some of the people who typically attend this laboratory. (b) Advanced Laboratory on Human Processes (ALHP) (5 days) Objective: To enable the participant to: (i) enhance learning and experimentation initiated by him/her in the Basic Laboratory on Human Processes; (ii) develop greater awareness of behavioural processes associated with his/her life and work on dilemmas faced in the context of perceived realities; and (iii) practise skills of observation of human processes and interventions. For Whom: Individuals who have participated in a Basic Laboratory on Human Processes or its equivalent (LGroup/Human Relations programmes in the laboratory mode, etc.) Participation Fee: Corporate: Residential (AC Single Room): Rs 10,000; Non-residential: Rs 8,500 Non-profit/Self-sponsored: Residential (AC Single Room): Rs 5,000; Non-residential: Rs 3,500
(c) Intimate Space: Effective Relationships at Home and Work (5 days) Facilitator: Snigdha Pattnaik; Co-facilitator: Khirod Pattnaik This laboratory creates a space for couples to explore their relationship and plan where they would like to take it. Participants learn to support each other in moving towards their individual goals while balancing between the requirements of work and their personal lives. It would be open for participants to shift to a more intimate, trusting, sensitive, and exciting future. It is not necessary that a couple should have experienced some problem in their relationship to join the laboratory. Good marriages can also become better. For organisations, the payback is an employee with a happier home life and a whole new outlook on relationships. Such an employee would be less stressed, more effective at the workplace, and also easier to retain. Objectives: To enable the participants to: (i) look at the closest relationship in their lives as also their own expectations and desires from it; (ii) explore ways to make the relationship free flowing and mutually supportive; and (iii) learn to extend the dynamics of building and nurturing mutually supportive relationships to the work place. For Whom: This laboratory is meant for married couples. Participation Fee: Residential (AC Double Room): Rs 13,000 per couple Non-residential: Rs 8,000 per couple Snigdha is a full-time faculty-member of XIMB and a Professional Member of ISABS. Khirod is a participant in the Professional Development Programme of ISABS, having relevant experience in facilitating experiential learning and organisational development processes. Snigdha and Khirod have been married to each other since 1985.
(d) Personal and Organisational Learning Processes (3 days, Sep 6-8, 2006) Facilitator: Madhukar Shukla The ability and openness to learn, unlearn, and relearn from experiences is a prerequisite not only for personal growth and efficacy, but also for organisational effectiveness. Both individuals and organisations have their unique styles to process and lean from their experiences. This laboratory provides a space to explore how learning occurs, the learning styles and processes, and the factors that facilitate and inhibit learning. It aims to help the participants master learning processes in personal life and in the organisational milieu. Objective: The enable the participants to: (i) gain an insight into learning as a process of personal and organisational growth and change; (ii) explore and learn about their unique learning styles and processes; and (iii) appreciate the human and cultural processes in organisations that facilitate and block learning. For Whom: This laboratory will be useful to professionals who are in learning-related fields, for example, HR professionals, educational leaders, trainers, management consultants, teachers, researchers, and students. Timings The Laboratories commence at 9.30 a.m. on September 4, and close at 6:00 p.m. on September 8. Participants may choose to arrive at the venue in the evening of September 3, or early in the morning of September 4. (For the 3 days’ laboratory on Personal and Organisational Learning Processes, participants should arrive at the venue in the evening of September 5, or early in the morning of September 6.) Check-out for all participants: 6:00 p.m. on September 8. Participants wishing to stay longer should arrange it separately with the venue manager.
Caution A person who has experienced continuous mental stress, or has been under psychiatric treatment, or has a history of mental disorders, or has had a coronary or heart attack(s), must not be nominated to or join the BLHP and ALHP laboratories. ISABS will not be responsible for any of such problems developed during or after participation in any ISABS laboratory. It is implicit that each participant joins the event with informed voluntary consent and owns responsibility for his or her own health.
