What is Iron?
It is second most commonly found metal. The symbol of iron is Fe. It is related with Transition Element. The Atomic number of Iron is 26 in the Periodic Table. The Electronic configuration of Iron is 2, 8,8,6,2.
Minerals in Iron 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Extraction of Iron (Fe2 O3) The Ore is concentrated by Hydraulic Washing with steam of water to remove the unwanted particles Like Clay, Sand etc. After that Following Gases are released :Fe2 O3. 3H2O 2FeCO3 4Fe + 3O2
Fe2O3

The Blast Furnace Iron ore, coke ,limestone
Hot waste gases
HOT WASTE GASES
400 c Steel lined with heat resistant brick
1800 c Hot air blast Tap hole for iron
Hot air blast Molten slag
Molten iron
Tap hole for iron
Smelting
Smelting 1.
A mixture of Iron Ore, Coke and Lime Stone is fed from the top of the furnace. C + O2 CO2 (Carbon) (oxygen) (Carbon dioxide)
2. Coke is converted into Carbon monoxide. CO2 + C 2CO (Carbon dioxide) (Carbon) (Carbon monoxide)
Slag
Slag Lime stone decomposes to give Calcium oxide and Carbon dioxide. CaCO3 CaO + CO2 (Lime Stone) (Calcium oxide) (Carbon dioxide) Calcium oxide reacts with Silicon dioxide to form Molten Calcium Silicate Known as Slag. CaO + SiO2 CaSiO3 (Calcium oxide) (Silica) (Calcium Silicate)
Pig Iron
Pig Iron The iron obtained from the Blast Furnace is Called Pig Iron. The temperature of upper part of Blast Furnace is 875 K.
The following reaction is occurred:Fe2 O3 + 3CO2 (Ferric oxide) (Carbon monoxide) dioxide)
Fe + 3CO2 (Iron) (Carbon
