SOCIAL MOBILIZATION Social Mobilization and organization of farmers is the most important element. Small farmers are to be organized and empowered at village level by establishing self managed Village Organizations (VOs), registered under Cooperative Societies Act 1925. These VOs will be able to take part in various economic and business activities for their better livelihood. In district Rahim Yar khan, responsibility is given to NRSP for social mobilization and organization of farmers.

What isisaaVO? What VO? •

A VO is a statutory body registered as Cooperative Society under the Cooperative Society Act 1925



A VO is a representative structure of farmers in a village and is formed, owned and administered by the farmers themselves



A VO is a mouthpiece for the economic rehabilitation of resourcepoor farmers



As a legal body, VO can do various economic activities like: – Running a business (input sale centers etc) – Buying, selling and hiring a property – Getting into agreement with any trading partner, and – Getting loans from commercial banks and so on.

WHEAT PRODUCTIVITY ENHANCEMENT

WHEAT PRODUCTIVITY ENHANCEMENT Targets  Plantation of 100 Acres bumper Wheat crop in each of 10 core villages and 60 acres in each of the project village.  Establishment of 10 Farmer Field Schools for Wheat crop in core villages.

Achievements  Aggressive campaign for productivity enhancement of wheat through adoption of improved production technology is launched in CMP-II area.  10 Farmer Field Schools have been established in CMP-II area for training of farmers through participatory approach.

CAPASITY BUILDING OF FARMERS

20 FFS were successfully established for cotton crop 200809 to train 500 farmers. 45 VOs are trained through 3 Days training course.

• 20 VOs are provided with RF management training. • 3 field days for cotton, 1 for wheat followed by aggressive wheat campaign and regular farmer meetings are being held.

LIVESTOCK SERVICES/FACILITATION

ESTABLISHMENT OF ANIMAL FIRST AID CENTER Project Support • Establishing Animal First Aid Centers • Selection of Village Veterinary Facilitators • Livestock health services & productivity enhancement facilitation

Achievements • 8 clusters have been notified for AFACs • Candidates for 1 year diploma course have been selected • Services are being provided to the member farmers & close collaboration has been established with the Govt. Dept.

Establishment of Revolving Fund • Project Support

• Achievements

• Establishment of Revolving fund in each project village to enable the VOs to provide input loans, to member farmers for adoption of production technologies, initiate small enterprises and establish market linkages.

• 18 VOs have partially received revolving fund amounting Rs. 9.9 Million • RF will be made operational within month

FARM IMPLEMENT POOLS • Clusters have been identified • Implements needed at village level have been decided through the respective VO • Collection of 20% farmer’s share is under process

Establishment of ISMC Project Support • Building 02 physical sale and marketing centre for the provision of quality inputs and better marketing of member farmer’s produce.

Achievements • Preliminary information and concept for the establishment of ISMC has been shared with the VOs and introductory workshop will be conducted within a month. • Potential locations for the establishment of ISMC have been identified and further discussions are under process.

Income Diversification Interventions Project Support

Achievements

 Initiation of different Income Diversification Interventions in each project village i.e Dairy/ Goat/Sheep farming, Bee keeping, Milk Collection, off seasonal vegetables, animal breeding, floriculture etc.

 Regular field visits are being made to assess the feasibility of suitable interventions for each village and resources are analyzed for the initiation of these interventions.  Hopefully 3 interventions for each village will be completed upto 30th June 2010, and then 3 interventions will be initiated each year.
