EXECUTIVES’ CHALLENGE DETAILS AND MECHANICS OF THE CONTEST Qualified Participants

 Interested schools can have at most two (2) teams to participate in the quiz contest. Each team must be composed of three (3) members and one (1) alternate (optional). Members of each team can be of the same or of different engineering courses. Each team can have one (1) coach only.  Participants of the quiz contest should be registered engineering students of the participating school for the 2nd semester, Academic Year 2007-2008. A certification verifying the previous statement should be submitted upon registration. Valid certification includes school I.D’s with picture or any document of school registration.  Only the first 60 teams to confirm their participation will be accommodated. Walk-in participants will be entertained in case of available slots. Contest Mechanics  The coverage of the quiz contest includes Engineering Mechanics (Statics and Dynamics), Strength of Materials, Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Materials of Engineering, Mathematical Methods in Engineering and Engineering Graphics.  All participating teams will be evenly grouped into two rosters: Roster A and Roster B. Roster designation will be done randomly provided that no two (2) teams from the same school will be assigned in the same roster. Designated roster classification for every team is final.  There shall be two (2) major elimination rounds (1st Elimination Round and 2nd Elimination Round) and a final round.  Questions for each round shall be categorized as easy, average and difficult rounds. For every correct answer, questions for the easy, average and difficult rounds are each worth 10, 20 and 30 points respectively.  Hard copy of questions shall be provided for each team by the proctors. At the same time, questions will be flashed on a big screen. Numerical constants shall be specified in the question. The corresponding time allotted for each question may vary and will be indicated on the screen to be read first by the quizmaster and the question thereafter.  Final answers should only be written on white boards. Final answers in correct form, correct units and correct number of decimal places as specified in the questions will be awarded the question’s corresponding points.  Scores of each team shall be reset for each round.  Whiteboards, markers, erasers and scratch papers will be provided for the teams throughout the contest proper. Contestants are required to bring their calculators during the contest. Only scientific non-programmable calculators are allowed. Calculators will be checked by the proctors before the contest starts.  Alternates are allowed to substitute only for the team they are registered with. In case, there is more than one team for a school, switching of alternates between teams is strictly prohibited. Qualifying Rounds

 There shall be two (2) major elimination rounds that would determine the final teams qualifying for the final round: 1st Elimination Round and 2nd Elimination Round A. First Elimination Round

1. There shall be two (2) rosters at the start of the first elimination round: Roster A Elimination Round and Roster B Elimination Round. While the elimination round for each roster is going on, a separate room for the contestants from the other roster shall be reserved. 2. The first elimination round shall be composed of seven (7) questions for each easy and average category and five (5) questions for the difficult category. 3. At the end of the first elimination round, the top 20% of the teams from each roster would make up the first two (2) sets of teams that will automatically advance to the final round. Subsequently, the top 50% of the non-qualifying teams from each roster shall proceed to the second elimination round. 4. Knock-out system will be imposed eliminating the teams with wrong final answers. B. Second Elimination Round 1. The second elimination round shall be composed of the top 50% of the nonqualifying teams from each roster. 2. The first elimination round shall be composed of seven (7) questions for each easy and average category and five (5) questions for the difficult category. 3. At the end of the second elimination round, the top 20% of the qualifying teams will join the previous sets of teams that have already qualified for the final round. 4. In case of a tie, a tiebreaker (“sudden death”) question shall be given until the last set of teams that will advance to the final round is declared Knockout system will be imposed eliminating the teams with wrong final answers. C. Final Round 1. The final round shall be composed of three (3) sets of teams that qualified from the first and second elimination rounds. 2. The final round will be composed of seven (7) questions for each category. 3. The top 3 teams with the highest scores at the end of the final round shall be declared as the winners. 4. In case of a tie, a tiebreaker (“sudden death”) question shall be given until the top three (3) teams are declared Knock-out system will be imposed eliminating the team/s with wrong final answers. Awards and Prizes

 All individual participants (quizzers and coaches) shall be given Certificates of Participation.

 The teams qualifying to the final round shall be given Certificates of Recognition.  The top three (3) teams with the highest scores at the end of the final round shall be awarded the following:

3rd Placer: trophy, medals, Certificate of Award and Php 10 000.00 2nd Placer: trophy, medals, Certificate of Award and Php 20 000.00

1st Placer: trophy, medals, Certificate of Award and Php 30 000.00 and a special gift package for the school Contest Rules and Regulations  Failure to present a valid certificate of school registration or identification shall penalize the team resulting to a “handicap” at the contest proper. The team will automatically have a score of zero (0) for every first question of the easy, average and difficult round.  Final answers having incorrect spelling, incorrect units or incorrect number of decimal places will not be granted any points.  Final answers can only be erased after all queries have been resolved by the judges. Queries regarding a specific question shall only be entertained after the answer to that question has been revealed and right before the quizmaster reads another question. Once the next question has been read, queries pertaining to the previous questions and other protests will no longer be entertained. Queries should first be addressed to the quizmasters and then the quizmasters will relay the question to the judges. For further clarifications, the teams can only approach the judges’ table after they have been acknowledged by the judges. The judges’ decision shall be final.  Contestants are strictly prohibited from using their cellular phones while the contest is on-going. In case any team member is caught doing so, the team will automatically be disqualified from the quiz contest. Registration Procedure A. Pre-Registration

 Interested schools must confirm their participation on or before January 25, 2008 for early registration and February 8, 2008 for the late registration through e-mail, snail mail or express mail.

a.) Registration forms and information sheets can be downloaded at www.uplbceo.org.ph. Accomplished registration forms and information sheets can be sent as attachments via electronic mail at [email protected] with the subject EC08_REG. School logos and 2x2 pictures can be attached to the downloaded information sheet or can be sent as different attachments in jpeg file type with the following file name format:  School logo: <school acronym>.jpeg ex. UPLB.jpeg  Contestant and Coach: .jpeg ex. CANLAS.jpeg

b.) Downloaded registration forms and information sheets can be printed and reproduced if the school would like to send more than one (1) team. Information sheet should be properly accomplished and must include the attached school logo (for new participating school only) and 2x2 pictures of the contestants and coach (optional).  Schools who will participate in the quiz contest are required to pay the registration fee on or before February 8, 2008. The table below summarizes the fees of registering participants.

 Only the schools which have completed the contest requirements (including registration fee) on or before February 8, 2008 shall be referred to as registered participants and will be included on all advertisements (posters and streamers), flash presentation and programme. Furthermore, only the registered contestants and coaches shall be given certificates of participation.  Amendments in the line-up of quizzers can only be entertained until February 8, 2008. B. Registration form and information sheet should be properly accomplished and a payment of the late registration fee shall be made.  Contest kits of the participants will be given upon validation.

Housing Arrangement

 The organization shall offer housing accommodation for participants coming from faraway regions at the Local Government Academy (LGA), University of the Philippines Los Baños with the following rate of accommodations: ROOM A B

 For the teams with housing reservations, the organization shall arrange a free transportation service to fetch the participants from OLIVAREZ PLAZA to UPLB campus on the date and time of arrival, and from LGA to EE Auditorium on the day of the event.  If your team/s are interested to avail the housing accommodation, kindly fill-up the Housing Arrangement Reply Form which can be downloaded at the organization’s website. Accomplished reply forms can be sent through e-mail at [email protected] with the subject EC08_Housing. TERMS AND AGREEMENT

1. The team must confirm if housing arrangement will be availed on or before February 8, 2008 2. Housing reservations shall be entertained on a first-come-first-serve basis. 3. The team shall be charged of the housing fee upon confirmation. Payments should be deposited to the organization’s bank account. A copy of the deposit slip should be kept for verification purposes. The team will be informed if reservations were already made. Payments made for the housing reservation is non-refundable but are transferable. 4. The team shall be held responsible for payments charged for extended stays or any other fees incurred in the occupation period.
