The cameras were large and clumsy compared with what we use today. They were made of brass and wood and the lens through and upside down image on to a ground glass screen at the rear. The photographer needed to put a black cloth over his head to be able to see that image

For most of the 19th century (until Kodak invented film) the image was taken on a glass plate which was coated with the necessary chemicals to make the image. In the early days these had to be prepared by the photographer as they were not made commercially.

Originally the camera was made to capture a moment in time quickly and exactly. Paintings often reflected the opinion of the painter in their art however photos show exactly what was happening..
