(a) Discuss the underlying principle in complexometric titration taking the example of determination of Ca2+ with EDTA. (b) What is the pH of a solution that is 0.04 M in formic acid &0.01M in sodium formate? (Ka of formic acid is 1.74 × 10−4 ) 2. (a) Define polarographic maxima.How is it eliminated in polarographic technique? (b) Describe the potentiometric titration of ferrous ammonium sulphate versus potassium dichromate. 3. (a) Explain froath floatation process with neat sketch. (b) Write short note on: i. Levigation ii. Electro magnetic separation. 4. (a) Explain briefly the ultimate analysis of fuel. (b) Bring out the difference and utility of proximate and ultimate analysis of coal. 5. (a) What are anti-knocking compounds? How can octane rating be improved . (b) A Sample of coal was found to contain the following C: 81%; H: 4%; O=2%; N=10%; the remaining being ash. Estimate the quantity of minimum air remaining for complete combustion of 1Kg of the sample. Find the composition of dry flue gas by volume, if 40% excess air is supplied. 6. (a) Name the different units of hardness and explain their interconversion. (b) Describe the disadvantages of hard water when used for steam generation in boilers. 7. Describe the various electric insulators and their uses. 8. An exhausted Zeolite softner was regenerated by passing 150 lit of NaCl solution, having strength of 150 g/L of NaCl. If the hardness of water is 800 ppm, calculate the total volume of water that is softned by this softner. ?????

Compare the lime-soda, zeolite and ion-exchange processes used for softening water. 7. (a) Enumerate the various properties of a refractory. (b) Write a note on the applications of solid thermal insulators. 8. Calculate the total hardness in o Fr and o Clarke for a sample of water that showed the following analysis:KOH = 0.0056 gm/litre; Ca(HCO3 )2 = 0.0162 gm/litre; NaCl = 0.585 gm/litre; MgSO4 = 0.024 gm/litre; MgCl2 = 0.019 gm/litre; Ca(NO3 )2 = 0.0164 gm/litre.
