SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS Pain relieved by resting joints Heberden's nodes (on the distal interphalangeal joints) bony nodules or spurs on the dorsolateral aspects of the distal joints of the finger
Bouchard's nodes (on the proximal interphalangeal joints) nodules on the proximal interphaleneal joints
Enlarged edematous joints Smooth shiny skin
Normal function of cartilage Focal trauma to cartilage
Chondrocyte injury and release of degration enzyme
Destruction of cartilage; loss of proteoglycan aggregates
Loss of tensile strength
Microfracture of subchondral bone with loss of compressibility Abnormal cartilage function
DIAGNOSIS Normally done in x-ray
MEDICAL MANAGE MENT •Diet theraphy low calorie •Weight reduction •joint replacement surgery •NSAID Ibufropen Piroxicam
NURSING INTERVENTION •Maintain calorie count •Provide heat theraphy; moist compress,paraffin baths
