Correlation of Engineering Diploma Learning Outcomes with Industrial Trust Visits

The analysis confirms a significant majority of Learning Objectives’s can be achieved or reinforced by as few as 2 or 3 carefully designed company visits. A visit to a heavy engineering, automotive and other manufacturing company could cover all necessary out of class Learning Objectives’s. The teaching units can be enhanced at all stages by reference to “remember when we visited XYZ, we saw how ABC etc”. For a group of 20-24 students there could be 2 visits to host a company who make no charge plus one who does (many automotive companies do). Transport costs would be about £250- £300 for this group size. By matching a diploma visit with other available funding the Trust charges for defining, arranging, accompanying and evaluating the 3 visits could be approx £600. Thus the 3 visits could be achieved for a total cost to the LA of ~£2,000. This is approx £30 per student per visit and thus falls below 10% of the extra funding available for Diploma students in order to facilitate the extra costs of employer engagement. In summary this suggests that over 80% of employer engagement needs could be met for less than 10% of available funding leaving some 90% of funding to be spent on other employer engagement activities. The majority of learning outcomes will be delivered in school, but there is a specific need to understand how companies use computer technology in their business. This understanding can be delivered as part of every company visit. Most of these learning outcomes will be delivered “in school”. Most company visits can include reinforcement of them by confirming their practical application in industry.

Most of these learning outcomes will be covered in school. However most company visits can reinforce them and confirm their practical applications in industry. In particular LO.1 & LO.3 will benefit from in company demonstration.
