Institut Jujitsu Indonesia/Indonesian Jujitsu Institute. (IJI) I.

History

1. Kyushin Ryu Jujitsu During the Edo period (1603-1868) several Jujutsu styles became paramount. These schools focused their activities on various techniques that their masters had developed over time. The Kyushin Ryu school specialised in systems of Atemi waza (striking techniques). The art was practiced by many Shogun with the aim of refining methods of attacking the exposed target areas around the armour of their opponent. Founder of the Kyushin Ryu school is Inugami Sakon-no-shokan Nagakatsu during the Eiroku period (1558-1570). Nagakatsu was a Samurai from the Hikone area within the ancient provence of Omi. Special focus on the core principles of Kyushin Ryu Jujtsu is: Atemi waza or Kyusho jutsu - striking techniques. Koppo Jutsu – Breaking or scattering human bone. Katsu waza or Kappo jutsu - methods of resuscitation and first aid. 2. Kyushin Ryu Jujitsu From Bantaran Angin to Institut Jujitsu Indonesia • • •

In second World war Jujitsu came to Indonesian (nearly at 1942) brought by Japanese Army and teaching to Young Indonesian who Join PETA (Defense of Nation) as war program facing an Allied Force who want to take (to established Dutch occupation again in Indonesian soil after 350 years occupation) Indonesia from Japanese hand. Man who teach Jujitsu to PETA is an Japanese Officer named Captain Ishikawa, he bring Kyushin Ryu Jujitsu with him and teach this syle of Jujitsu to Indonesian PETA complete with Heiho / warfare tactics. Raden Soetopo young man a noble decedent from Ponorogo at east java, have been learn Jujitsu from Mr. Ishikawa when he Join the PETA. After Japanese Army is defeated by Allied Forces in the middle of 1945, Indonesia declared the Independence at 17 August 1945. After second world war is ended and Indonesia declare the Independence, Raden Soetopo back home to Ponorogo at east Java and established his martial arts School of Bantaran Angin. He have several of student who learn Bantaran Angin with him, several name of his students is: Mr. Firman Sitompul, Brigadir Jendral Polisi D.P.M Sitompul SH, MH, Mr. Heru Nurcahyo,

Mr. Heru Winoto dan Mr. Bambang Soeprijanto. As the time goes the name of “Bantaran Angin” was change into Institut Jujitsu Indonesia or IJI, the style of Institut Jujitsu Indonesia , is I Kyu shin ryu Jujitsu (some say letter I front of Kyushin ryu is Ishikawa to respect and remembering man who brought this Jujitsu to Indonesia and others have another argument, letter I front of Kyushin ryu is Indonesia). Techniques

IJI techniques is different from other Nihon Jujutsu, the style of Institut Jujitsu Indonesia is Spartan, simple and deadly effective, devoid artificial and theatrical posture, the stances is simply and efficient, basic techniques of Institut Jujitsu Indonesia was Atemi waza or striking human vital point with hand and foot . Until now some people still mistake`s Institut Jujitsu Indonesia with other hard style Karate, there is another different from Nihon Jujitsu is Aerial Kick who still practice in Institut Jujitsu Indonesia. Techniques of Institut Jujitsu Indonesia include: 1. Basic stances and body Movement

2. Kata`s 3. Atemi / Striking with human anatomical weapon ( finger`s, hand, elbow, knee and foot ) 4. Blocking, Parrying and Trapping techniques. 5. Break falls and escape techniques. 6. Throwing techniques. 7. Body Lock, Joint Lock and Wrist Lock techniques. 8. Breathing and Inner Force techniques, include braking hard object ( Tamashi ware ) 9. Self defense against single and multiple attackers. 10. Self defense against blunt and bladed weapon. 11. Bone setting, Massage and First Aid techniques ( Kuatsu or Kappo Jutsu ) 12. Weapon Techniques, include: a. Katana b. Tanto c. Shuriken d. Yari e. Bo f. Hanbo g. Yawara bo h. Flexible weapon ( Nunchaku’s, Belt and Chain ) i. Umbrella j. Side Handle Baton ( for Police )

At 1981 techniques of Institut Jujitsu Indonesia have been shown at Japanese Embassy. Japanese ambassador at the time gave an big credit and gave recognition Institut Jujitsu Indonesia was the Indonesian Jujitsu and same like Brazilian Jujitsu from Gracie Family. In 1997 IJI have been join with WCJJO (World Council of Jujutsu Organization) to introducing IJI around the world.

Jujitsu as a sports and self defense for civilian, is using too by of Indonesian Army and Police to complement their techniques for military or Police self defense. Until now IJI Dojo has been spread through out Indonesia.
