East Asian financial crisis  Started in Thailand with the financial collapse of the Thai baht

  In June 1997, Indonesia seemed far from crisis.

  Rupiah came under attack by speculators after govt. widened trading band from 8% to 12%

  Moody's eventually downgraded Indonesia's longterm debt to 'junk bond’

  Indonesia lost 13.5% of its GDP that year. 

Indonesian rupiah  Freq. used Rp 1000, Rp 5000, Rp 10 000, Rp 20 000 Rp 50 000, Rp 100 000   Also called "perak" ('silver' in Indonesian)   Rupiah is subdivided into 100 sen   US$1 generally worth about 10,000 rupiah

Bank of Indonesia  Founded on July 1, 1953   The banking system of Indonesia consists of Bank of Indonesia (the central bank),   Commercial banks, and regional credit banks.   Head office is located in Jakarta 

Evolution 

Under Act No.13 Year 1968 assisted the government to achieve several goals.

 

On May 17, 2000, the Act No. 23 Year 1999 was enacted making it a independent central bank free from the interference of other parties or the government.

    
