Kenya - Mombasa & Malindi

Kenya - Mombasa & Malindi

Beach life The picturesque town is built on an island and is attached to the mainland by two deepwater harbours. To the North it is joined to Tudor Creek by a toll bridge, with views over the harbour linking the town to the North Coast resorts, night clubs and restaurants. On the South side a ferry carries cars and passengers over Kilindini Creek to the entrance of the modern port area, en route to the splendid beaches and hotels on the South Coast.

i CAPITAL CITY: Nairobi LANGUAGE: English is widely spoken, with Swahili being the official language

Malindi Malindi is the second largest coastal town of Kenya and it is situated about 120 km north of Mombasa just a little south of the equator. Malindi conjures up visions of a great historic town that has journeyed through ages. The culture, economy and general setup of any given place changes with time, and Malindi has journeyed through these eras with much pomp and flair.

CURRENCY: Kenyan Schilling (Ksh). We recommend taking US Dollars as the preferred foreign exchange VISA: No visas are required for SA passport holders AREA: 586, 600 km2 TIME DIFFERENCE: SA Time + 1 hour HEALTH REQUIREMENTS: A yellow fever certificate is required, and anti-malaria precautions are recommended

BEST TIME TO TRAVEL Kenya is generally a dry area with pleasant overall conditions all year round. There is a wet season between April and June and a second in November and December. Temperatures are consistent throughout the year and cool for an equatorial region, ranging mostly in the high 20C to low 30C.

The Kenyan coast is lined with pristine white sand beaches fringing the warm inviting waters of the Indian Ocean. Here the wilderness meets the sea, and the ocean itself holds a world of spectacular coral reefs teeming with life and colour. The coast is a place with a long and exotic history, its calm blue waters the traditional passage of the Arabian Spice Trade. Along the length of this coast, Arab and Portuguese forts, Old Towns and the overgrown, deserted ruins of Swahili outposts bear witness to this fascinating history. In the winding medieval streets and bustling markets of Lamu and Mombasa Old Town, life has continued unhurried and unchanged for more than 400 years. This blend of natural beauty and living history creates an exotic paradise unlike anywhere else on earth.

From the time of the early Chinese and Arab traders to the Portuguese sailors and later on to European settlers who alongside other investors have transformed Malindi into a reputable destination of tourism importance. There is much warmth and hospitality of the people of Kenya to experience here in Malindi.

BEST TIME TO TRAVEL Seychelles lies outside the cyclone belt and enjoys stable weather year round with the temperature never dropping below 24C or rising above 32C. There are two distinct seasons, from May to September the South East trade winds bring dry and cooler weather and October to March the North West trade winds bring warm and humid weather. January and February are generally rainy periods on the islands.

White sand beach in Praslin The Seychelles islands are of the most beautiful islands in the world and still unspoilt offering days of perpetual summer and a rare combination of people and nature living in close harmony. The Seychelles is made up of 115 islands and they are located 1000 miles off the East African coast in the Indian Ocean. Of all of the islands, Mahe is the most developed and visited with many visitors venturing across to Praslin, La Digue and recently Silhouette Island. Mahe Island has 75 beaches in total with the most popular of all the beaches being Beau Vallon Bay. All the islands of Seychelles are unique with their own beautiful settings, crystal clear waters and shady swaying palms. Each island of Seychelles offers a unique experience with something to offer for every traveller. Although the Seychelles offer the full range of accommodation from self-catering apartments to luxury hotels, careful planning has ensured that the islands have retained the astonishing beauty and quiet charm that attracted the first tourists.

Right from the start, the government decreed that no new building could be higher than the surrounding palm trees, with the result that big-city levels of comfort and convenience have been achieved in thoroughly Seychellois settings. The Seychellois are connoisseurs of good food with the origins of their racially mixed backgrounds making interesting and exotic cooking. The main meal of the day is eaten in the evening and with so much of life in the Seychelles dominated by the ocean it is little wonder that many of the recipes include fish.

Getting There Air Seychelles flies direct to Mahe, Seychelles on a Friday and Sunday with add on options available from other major centres. Flying time is approximately 4 hours.

Stone Town street Fifteen miles from mainland Tanzania, the Zanzibar Archipelago consists of main island Unguja, Pemba and many small islands. Zanzibar is the largest coral island off the coast of East Africa. With centuries old sailing dhows still sailing the waters and ornately wooden carved doors still decorating many homes, the scent of cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg abounds. Zanzibar, “the island of spices” has a strong Arabic influence. The tropical island is about 85 km’s long and 30 km’s wide with a number of tiny islands around it, Pemba which is the largest and called Al-khudra in Arabic meaning the green island. Stone Town is the old city and cultural heart of Zanzibar where little changed in the last 200 years. It is a place of winding alleys, bustling bazaars, mosques and grand Arab houses.  The unique architecture of Stone Town fuses Arabic, Indian, European and African influences.  You can spend many idle hours and days just wandering through the fascinating labyrinth of narrow streets and alleyways.
