Izzy Lorthioir Mrs. Sienkowski AP Eng III 29 July, 2017 In Cold Blood Review Detective Alvin Dewey is on the hunt for two murderers, after the murder of the Clutter family. In Truman Capote's murder thriller, In Cold Blood, Murderers Perry Smith and Dick Hickock are on the run, before being caught and tried to Death Row. As Perry and Dick are preparing for the murder, you may feel like screaming at the Clutter family, "Run! Get out of the house before you're murdered!" Capote throws into a novel full of suspense, and is guaranteed to hook and reel you in to the very last page. Capote sets the murder scene in dun and isolated Kansas, where the home of the Clutters lies in the farming town of Holcomb. Mother and father Bonnie and Herb Clutter are prepping for Thanksgiving with teens Kenyon and Nancy, on the day before they meet their end. Dick and Perry arrive late at night in a hunting gear, and ask to use their phone. Soon, all four of the Clutters are found dead in the bedroom; with graphic details of their death by a shotgun. The two murderers run to Mexico to escape the law, and Dewey follows after. Soon, they're caught in Las Vegas and admit to their crime. Why did they do it? What compelled them to commit such a horrendous murder? The answer to those questions are money, at least for Dick. Perry wanted to find a former inmate that understood him, but he could never be found; and so he was just along for the ride. Dick heard that Mr. Clutter had a secret safe filled with money, as he was a wealthy man. Soon after , Perry and Dick are sent to Death Row, and their plan comes to an end. Capote sets up In Cold Blood in a different way than the

average murder mystery. Capote tells us "whodunnit" in the beginning, giving the book to unique taste. Capote's vivid imagery makes you feel as if you were in the room of the murder, shielding your eyes from the gruesome sight. What makes the reader frustrated and absolutely hooked, is the use of dramatic irony. On the day the Clutter's murder would occur, Capote switches between the point of view of the Clutters and the murderers. This creates a frantic and maddening mood to the reader, because they are not in control of the situation, and that the inevitable will happen. One aspect of the book that I enjoyed the most is that it gives the feelings and insights of Perry and Dick. The "In Cold Blood" title contradicts their nature to "kill in Cold Blood." Overall, the book was unique and very captivating, and I completely enjoyed it.
