IMPACT OF MILTRIZATION AND WEAPONISATION OF SPACE ON PEACE AND DEVELOPMENT Space is the only common boundary that borders every community providing an unexpected potential nexus for scientific achievement, economic prosperity and strategic stability. Space based assets are rapidly becoming part of our advance national and infrastructures. As our dependency on space assets has grown, so have legitimate concerns about the security is to secure sustainable access to and use of space and the freedom from space-based threats. As we move into the 21st century i.e. in an era of peace and prosperity, there is an increased militarization of outer space. United States is the predominant military power in space. Space has been militarized since the earliest communication satellites launched into orbits. Although space is heavily militarized, it is not yet weaponized. There is a distinction between militarization and weaponisation. WEAPONISATION is generally understood to refer to the placement in orbit of space, devices that have destructive capacity. The weaponisation of space represents a real threat to the security of everyone on Earth. It is US that stand to loose the most in such a race to militarization of the outer space. Weaponisation of outer space will destroy strategic balance and stability, undermine international and national security and disrupt

existing arms control instruments, particularly those related to nuclear weapons and missiles. Effects of these will inevitably lead to a new arms race. Space weaponisation would seriously disrupt the arms control and disarmament process. US ground and sea based defense have already increased tensions with Russia. The strategies and missiles deployment of US space based missile defenses will likely cause Russia as well to do so and increase their nuclear arsenals. China would likely be forced to build more warheads to maintain its nuclear deterrent which could in turn encourage India and Pakistan to follow suit. Right before our eyes, prospects of banning nuclear weapons is slipping through our fingers. Unfortunately most people are not aware of this vaguely heard arms control talks, thinking that the great powers are finally disseminating their weapons. “Nothing can be farther from the truth”. Sadly the superpowers are dangerously pursuing their goal of military superiority, even though there is not an enemy in sight. Space debris, resulting from 50 years of space activity, already posses a considerable hazard to spacecrafts. The time to stop this madness has come. Nuclear weapons scattered in atmosphere create shock waves violent winds and intense heat that can inflict severe damage and casualties. There occurs hazardous after effects on earth due to satellites and space debris that re-enter the atmosphere and do not burn up completely during re-entry and land on earth. Some satellites may be navigated in region of an ocean but most often the satellites randomly re-enters and it is very difficult to predict where it will hit earth. In march2007, pieces of space junk from a Russian satellite

coming out of orbit narrowly missed hitting over Pacific Ocean. These are having harmful on health also. Ammonium percolate, a toxic ingredient of solid rocket propellant that effect thyroid hormones function and can effect brain development of foetus. Its also creating space as well as atmospheric pollution. Pollution leads to “Global warming” –a major problem on earth. Global warming means increase in the level of Carbon dioxide. As a result of which ice on poles will start melting with the increase in temperature .On melting of ice, there will be more water in sea and that will lead to increase sea level and the earth will sink. So we should take some serious steps to stop this factor. Beside pollution problem in space, there is congested traffic in space so that satellites should be periodically nudged in there orbit. The greatest threat to the space environment is in testing and deployment of missile defense. In order to prevent an ecological disaster in space, international treaties must be strengthened so that they manage space debris and prohibit anti-satellite weapons on the ground or in the space. A weapons race or war in space would destroy the space environment. At last for the welfare of mankind we should commit to work together and make greater efforts to promote the peaceful use of outer space, devoting the previous resources in outer space, entirely to the peace and development of mankind, because one mistake can lead to a huge disaster about which man is still ignorant.
