Mondrian started as a painter of landscapes and trees.
He emphasised the horizontal and vertical lines and filled in the spaces with plain colours.

Joseph Beuys (1921-86) German installation and conceptual artist
Pushing traditional artforms beyond normal boundaries. Art and life are not separate things; Beuys lives his art and art became his life.

Oil-painted dots, specks and dashes of bright colours that blend together when viewed from a distance.
Semi-scientific approach to art. You, the viewer, have to make the effort to 'finish' the picture off in your own mind as you look at it.
Georges Seurat (1859-91) invented the technique, Paul Signac (1863-1935) also used it. Photographs in magazines are printed using dots of ink: look at one using a magnifying glass.
Drawings in crayon, charcoal; paintings in watercolour, oil.
Gradually reduced his compositions to the most basic simple geometric forms and primary colours.

Hard and soft materials including wood, metal and stone. All sorts of found junk, industrial felt, wax and animal fat.
Beuys lived his belief that art can change society; he was a philosopher as well as an artist.
Work included a Volkswagen van pulling some sledges. VW cars have featured a lot in art, for example see an example in Tom Wesselmann, Landscape No.2, on page 68.
All computer-drawn using 'Photoshop' software.
To represent popular culture: shopping, Lego, TV, toy commercials, computer games and the media.
Theo Van Doesburg (1883-1931) created isometric drawings in paint on paper for the de Stijl group in 1923.
