IFC in Aceh Aceh Shrimp Project, Gandapura Subdistrict, Bireuen District

Shrimp farmer in Gandapura, Bireuen district. Many farmers participating in IFC’s shrimp project saw encouraging decreases in shrimp mortality during the first growing cycle. In the first month of the cycle, only six percent of ponds were affected by disease, as compared with 80% before the project.

Seaweed was introduced to the shrimp farms, a first for Aceh. Seaweed acts as a biofilter and improves the overall health of the shrimp. With sufficient volume, seaweed can also become a cash crop.

Removing black sludge, consisting of years of accumulated shrimp waste, improves the environment for shrimp. This backbreaking work was a key recommendation by the Project.

Project sign in Gandapura subdistrict. The site has been visited by other organizations working in the sector, including ADB, GTZ, and Red Ribbon, a Medan-based shrimp processor. More government and international organizations are planning to visit in the months to come to learn from IFC’s experience.

The shrimp sector supports approximately 100,000 throughout the production chain. These children may one day benefit from better management practices being implemented in their village today.

IFC implements an advisory services program in Gandapura, a subdistrict of Bireuen, to introduce better management practices to the sector. The first harvest in the summer of 2007 showed dramatic decreases in shrimp mortality. In FY08, the program will work on linking farmers to markets and access to finance.

Improving the Investment Climate

The Vice Governor of Aceh, Muhammad Nazar, joins IFC, BKPMD, BRR, the Chamber of Commerce, and the head of the IOO at its grand opening in April 2007. The IOO was established following an IFC/FIAS recommendation for its establishment.

The Investment Outreach Office (IOO) as seen from the Hermes Palace Hotel across the street. The IOO provides investor support services and has become a knowledge sharing point on investment issues for both the private and public sectors. The IOO is the first investment promotion agency of its kind in Indonesia. Its model is likely to be copied elsewhere in Indonesia.
