Why is your patient getting this medication Treatment of edema

For IV meds, compatibility with IV drips and/or solutions N/A

Mechanism of action and indications (Why med ordered) Increases excretion of sodium and water by inhibiting sodium reabsorption in the distal tubule. Promotes excretion of chloride, potassium, magnesium, and bicarbonate. May produce arteriolar dilation.

Nursing Implications (what to focus on) Contraindications/warnings/interactions Hypersensitivity

Common side effects Dizziness, drowsiness, lethargy, weakness, hypotension, anorexia, cramping, nausea, vomiting, hypokalemia, dehydration, hypercalcemia. Interactions with other patient drugs, OTC or herbal Lab value alterations caused by medicine medicines (ask patient specifically) Monitor electrolytes especially K, Blood glucose, BUN, Additive hypotension with other antihypertensives. serum creatinine, and uric acid levels. Be sure to teach the patient the following about this medication Take at the same time each day. Do not double doses. Monitor weight biweekly, change positions slowly. Report muscle weakness, cramps, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea.
