To: UBC Masters of Educational Technology Re: Dustin Hyde Statement of Intent The landscape and delivery of education is quickly changing. I have been involved with Aboriginal Education program for 10 years in school district 67. I have witnessed the gradual implementation of online/digital/technology based education filter into our classrooms, schools, and district. It is my personal, professional, and philosophical belief that understanding and embracing educational technology is critical for the industry of education. It is also critical for myself and other teachers to better understand how technology is shaping the future of education and further, how technology can both streamline and engage both teachers and students. Perhaps what I am most excited about, and in specific response to the goal portion of this statement, is my desire to bridge my own Aboriginal perspective with the educational technology literature. Can I better utilize educational technology in culturally sensitive and appropriate ways? Can educational technology help the delivery of our district Aboriginal Education program in School District 67? Further to this, I know that the UBC MET program will broaden my perspective, skill set, and professional leadership. This program will aid in the accreditation process associated with public education and thereby open up continued opportunities for professional growth. Another notable reason for applying to the UBC MET program is my personal and professional situation. I am a full time teacher, father of three, and basketball coach. Life is incredibly busy. The opportunity to engage in research and learning in an that I am passionate about, while maintaining the ability to holistically balance the quadrants of my life is very important to me. Travelling, weekly meetings, annual visits etc. are a challenge to manage at this point in my life. The fully online structure of the UBC MET program is absolutely ideal for a person in my situation. Ultimately, I fully believe that UBC Masters of Educational Technology will provide me with the opportunity to explore multiple different points of interest that will tap into both my professional and personal growth plan.
