How Do You Yield Yourself To God? Romans 6:19 – I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; EVEN SO now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness. If you have asked yourself, ‘How do I yield myself to God?’ The answer is given, ‘the same way you gave yourself to sin.’ Bear in mind Paul is not talking about ignorant sin, for there would be no way of knowing how you yielded to something you were ignorant of. That wouldn’t be sin anyway for the scripture says, “…To him that knoweth to good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.” and, “…at times of this ignorance God winked at.” (James 4:17; Acts 17:30) All of us have had our experience with sin; indeed some of us are still in it. This experience of knowing to do good and doing it not is the experience Paul is addressing. And he says, “…As ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness…EVEN SO now yield your members servants to righteousness.” What does EVEN SO mean? It means ‘in the same way’. So the text may read thus, “…As ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness ‘IN THE SAME WAY’ now yield your members servants to righteousness.” How did you yield your members servants to uncleanness or simply how did you, knowing what was the good, still do it not? I hear you say, “It wasn’t me” or “I gave in to it”. That’s right. And just how did you give in to it? You answer, “The temptation was too strong to resist, and so I yielded.” Hence when you had lost all strength to resist the feeling to do wrong, you yielded and at once the sin was allowed to run its course. Well then, EVEN SO – IN THE SAME WAY- now yield yourselves unto God as those that are alive from the dead. It is not you who wills to do right! “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” (Phil 2:13) It is not you who wants or is able to keep you from falling! “Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy.” (Jude 24) And it is not you who possesses the strength to fight against the motions of sins in your flesh! “…Without me ye can do nothing.” John 15:5 Do you not yet even now this minute sense His presence seeking entrance into your heart? It will not be you striving against sin, you are yielding your members as “instruments of righteousness unto God” and God will use his instruments for righteousness ONLY (Rom 6:13).When you have yielded unto God, allowing him to have you, He will have His way in you, and by continually allowing him to have His way with you, He will take you onto victory to victory, from strength to

strength. “Many are inquiring, "How am I to make the surrender of myself to God?" You desire to give yourself to Him, but you are weak in moral power, in slavery to doubt, and controlled by the habits of your life of sin. Your promises and resolutions are like ropes of sand. You cannot control your thoughts, your impulses, your affections. The knowledge of your broken promises and forfeited pledges weakens your confidence in your own sincerity, and causes you to feel that God cannot accept you; but you need not despair. What you need to understand is the true force of the will. This is the governing power in the nature of man, the power of decision, or of choice. Everything depends on the right action of the will. The power of choice God has given to men; it is theirs to exercise. You cannot change your heart, you cannot of yourself give to God its affections; but you can choose to serve Him. You can give Him your will; He will then work in you to will and to do according to His good pleasure. Thus your whole nature will be brought under the control of the Spirit of Christ; your affections will be entered upon Him, your thoughts will be in harmony with Him. Desires for goodness and holiness are right as far as they go; but if you stop here, they will avail nothing. Many will be lost while hoping and desiring to be Christians. They do not come to the point of yielding the will to God. They do not now choose to be Christians. Through the right exercise of the will, an entire change may be made in your life. By yielding up your will to Christ, you ally yourself with the power that is above all principalities and powers. You will have strength from above to hold you steadfast, and thus through constant surrender to God you will be enabled to live the new life, even the life of faith.” {Steps to Christ pg 47 -48.}
