upport Newspapers in Education and win a Vespa Scooter at this year’s

show. The final drawing for the schoolbus-yellow Vespa Scooter, benefiting, The Union’s Newspapers In Education program will be held at this year’s Fall Home & Harvest Festival. The raffle, which is aiming to raise more than $4,000 for the program, will support local teachers participating in Newspapers in Education. Donated by Sierra Motor Sports, the scooter has been seen all around town at popular events since the Nevada County Fair and will be on its final display this weekend at the home show, where one lucky winner will take it home! So far, the scooter raffle has raised more than $2,500 for the NIE program, and needs your support to help the program reach goal! NIE is a nationwide program providing teachers with lesson plans and materials for using local newspapers in the classroom. The program is a win-win for local newspapers and local educators: It enables newspapers to cultivate readers at a young age, and it gives teachers a free teaching tool to use in their classrooms. Teachers use newspapers in lessons ranging from math based on stocks to writing about news stories.  The Union sends out packets to K-12 classrooms every year, giving teachers the opportunity to sign up for the program at no cost. Newspapers are delivered to classrooms on days specified by the teachers. The Union staff members also visit classrooms by request to discuss journalism and newspaper writing. NIE is funded solely by donations from businesses and the community, including periodic fundraisers like this one. The Union subscribers going on vacation also can donate their missed papers to the program. In support of the program, Sierra Motor Sports’ yellow Vespa will be raffled off at The Union’s Fall Home and Harvest show this Sunday, Oct. 18. Tickets can be purchased for $5 each, or five tickets for $20, in The Union’s office lobby at 464 Sutton Way, Grass Valley; and from Sierra Motor Sports at 2121 Nevada City Highway, Grass Valley, or all weekend at this year’s Fall Home & Harvest Festival. for the kids

ob Keyser, known to most as Farmer Bob, has a reputation for generosity bigger than his modest personality would imply. Thanks to his faithful customers who come and buy from him at his fruit and vegetable stand, Bob — for a second year — is in a position to donate more than 700 pumpkins to the Fall Home & Harvest Festival. But this isn’t the first time he has donated to the community. Keyser’s contributions to the Interfaith Food Bank this summer totaled more than 3,000 pounds of organic heirloom tomatoes. “I don’t know,” Keyser said, “It’s a shame to throw something away or feed it to the hogs when someone in need could eat it.” “God’s been good to me, and most people have never had the opportunity to have a vineripened heirloom tomato . . . I am happy I can share what I am able to with the people in need. It takes all of us to feed the hungry in this county and in the world.” After wandering through a hay maze, donated by Ridge Feed Farm Supply Co., you can find Farmer Bob’s pumpkins at this year’s Fall Home & Harvest Festival in the Enchanted Pumpkin Patch, where children and adults, can pick up one of Farmer Bob’s FREE small pumpkins. Follow the maze inside the Northern Mines Building to Paint-A-Pumpkin, where participants can paint their pumpkin for a donation to Paint the Town Pink, The Union’s and Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital’s breast cancer awareness event. These festivities could not take place with out Farmer Bob’s generous donation. This past summer, Farmer Bob’s fruit and vegetable stand, located behind The Union building off Sutton Way — next to Empire Shoes, offered tasty melons, fragrant nectarines, and a wide array of organic heirloom tomatoes. One man stops in for watermelons and comments.“These are the best in the world.” Another woman confesses,“I’m addicted to these tomatoes and nectarines.” The exceptional flavor of the fruits and vegetables is no accident, as Bob explains it. He and farming partners, Brad and Judy Johnson, work about 80 acres in Gridley where the soil is friendly and the weather is warmer than the foothills. He is able to provide Nevada County a wide array of fresh vegetables early in the season. Bob confesses that he’s not great at all the paper work and praises his partners for completing the extensive forms that got their acres official certification for organic farming. “I like to do the farming,” Bob comments,“I used to leave the paper work up to (farming partners) Brad and Judy Johnson, but to be certified, I have my share to do also.” Locally, Keyser is able to provide fresh local produce, pumpkins, and Christmas trees while also providing jobs to laborers out in the fields during his busy seasons. The Union would like to thank Farmer Bob for his generous donation of pumpkins to the Harvest Festival at this year’s Fall Home and Harvest Festival. Be sure to visit Farmer Bob’s pumpkin patch at his fruit and vegetables and vegetable stand, and make Farmer Bob your first stop for your fresh silver tip, nobel, grand, and douglas fir Christmas trees this year. Located behind The Union Newspaper building off Sutton Way, Christmas trees will be available everyday from 8 am to 8 pm from the day after Thanksgiving through Christmas. Bob ensures quality service and a happy holiday greeting to every patron who walks on the farm. For more information , contact Farmer Bob at (530) 559-2246 or P.O. You too can raise chickens in your backyard A

t this year’s event, not only will Ridge Feed be participating as a regular vendor, they will also be participating in the newest component of the Fall Home & Harvest Festival, Back to Basics. As a participating Back to Basics vendor, Ridge Feed will be teaching people in the community how to raise poultry in their backyard. The demonstration, which will be held on Saturday from 12 to 12:30 p.m. and Sunday from 2:30 to 3 p.m., will focus on the care and shelter chickens and other poultry in your backyard. The demonstration will include basic care of chickens, ducks and other poultry, providing you with useful information on feeding and housing needs for your new backyard friends along with a short demonstration on how-to build a shelter. As a huge act of generosity, Ridge Feed has also graciously donated all the hay bales for a second year in a row needed to build the maze that leads to the field of free pumpkins, also donated to the event from Farmer Bob. This type of contribution is a reflection of the pride Ridge Feed takes in providing this community with excellent customer service. This family based business, which was established in 1964, partakes in many community events, ranging from the Home Show to the Fair, where they have had hay bail competitions. Owner, Curt Chittock purchased his father’s store in 1986 and later opened The Farm Store in Penn Valley in April of 1994. “I believe that in a way, the store is my home and customers are guests and should be treated

as such. This much I know, without customers, there is no Ridge Feed or Farm Store,” he said. The next generation of Chittock’s has stepped up to the plate to assist in this family business. Their son Nic manages the Farm Store while Mark Clement holds down Ridge Feed with the help from Curt’s daughter, Leslie, and sonin-law, Neil. Don’t miss Ridge Feed’s booth at The Union’s Home & Harvest Festival outside or at the Back to Basics demonstration stage on both Saturday and Sunday. Ridge Feed is located at 12892 Ridge Road, Grass Valley. To reach the Ridge Feed store call (530) 2733886, to reach the Penn Valley Farm Store call (530) 432-2835.

How to make and can your own homemade applesauce WHY CAN FOODS?

Canning can be a safe and economical way to preserve food at home. Canning homegrown food may save you half the cost of buying commercially canned food. Many vegetables begin losing some of their vitamins when harvested. Nearly half the vitamins may be lost within a few days unless the fresh produce is cooled or preserved. If vegetables are handled properly and canned promptly after harvest, they can be more nutritious than fresh produce sold in local stores. Proper canning practices include: • carefully selecting and washing fresh food, • peeling some fresh foods, • hot packing many foods, • adding acids (lemon juice or vinegar) to some foods, • using acceptable jars and self-sealing lids, • processing jars in a boiling-water or pressure canner for the correct period of time. Collectively, these practices remove oxygen; destroy enzymes; prevent the growth of undesirable bacteria, yeasts, and molds; and help form a high vacuum in jars. Good vacuums form tight seals which keep liquid in and air and microorganisms out.

oin A to Z Supply in their informative demonstration on making and canning your own applesauce on Saturday from 3:30-4 p.m. and Sunday from 12-12:30 p.m. A long-time vendor at The Union’s Home & Garden Shows, A to Z is joining the event on a new level this year as a Back to Basics vendor, where they will demonstrate their product line of canning materials and supplies, ranging from jars to water-bath canners to lids, bands and jelly strainers. They will have new suggestions from the U.S.D.A. and the National Home preserving on guidelines of how to can certain fruits and vegetables and how not to. Be sure to stop by the A to Z booth to answer all your questions about canning and home preserving.

Applesauce canning recipe The first and most important thing to do when making applesauce is to pick the best, sweetest tasting apples so that there is no extra sugar required. A good combination of apples would be red delicious, gala, Fuji, Roma are a good mixture. Try not to use just one variety because some are sweeter than others and others give off a great aromatic smell to the applesauce. 12 apples, peeled, cored, quartered and treated with either Fruit Fresh or lemon juice in water to prevent browning. Water Sugar - this is optional. 4 tbsp of lemon juice 8 - 16 oz Pint glass preserving jars with lids and bands. Prepare water bath canner. Heat jars and lids in simmering water until ready for use. Do not boil. Set bands aside.  Combine apples with just enough water to prevent sticking in a large stainless steel saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce heat and boil gently, stirring occasionally, for 5 to 20 minutes, until apples are tender. Remove from heat and let cool slightly, - 5 minutes. Transfer apples, working in batches, to a food mill or a food processor fitted with a metal blade and puree until smooth. Return puree’ to a saucepan. Add sugar if using, and lemon juice. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring frequently to prevent sticking. Maintain a gently boil over low heat while filing jars. Ladle hot applesauce into hot jars leaving 1/2 inch headspace. Remove air bubbles. Wipe rim. Center lid on jar. Apply hand until fit is fingertip tight. Process jars in a boiling water canner for 20 minutes. Do not forget to adjust your cooking time depending on your altitude. Remove jars and cool. Check lids for seal after 24 hours. The lids should not flex up and down when center is pressed. To treat apples to prevent browning, apply Fruit Fresh or submerge cut apples in a mixture of 1/4 cup of lemon juice to 4 cups of water.

Gold panning How to pan for gold Submersion: Put about 4 handfuls of material into your gold pan. Submerse the pan in the stream. While holding the gold pan under water, move the pan in a circular motion so that the lighter materials will be carried out of the gold pan. Don’t move it too rapidly or you may lose gold along with the rocks and sand. Keep doing this until about half of the material in the gold pan is gone. Panning: Lift the pan out of the water and begin swirling it around with it tipped slightly to the side where the riffles are. When all the water is gone dip the pan into the water again, bring it back out, and start swirling again. Keep doing this until nearly all the material in the pan is gone Separation and Retrieval: Use a suction pipette to spray water into the pan and separate any nuggets or flakes of gold from the sand in the bottom of the gold pan. Submerge and Sift: Pour about 4 handfuls of material onto your sifter. Submerge the sifter into the water and proceed to rock the sifter up and down followed with a few vertical shake. This process helps loosen and remove the dirt and debris. Turn your sifter and repeat the process until all that is left are clean rocks, pebbles and gems. Placement: Once your material is clean, rock your sifter a few more times until the materials create a center line. Place your working sponge, smooth side down, into the sifter. Slightly tilt the sifter while holding the sponge to drain off the excess water. Retrieval: Using a variety of implements such as Popsicle sticks, brushes and tweezers, separate your gems from the rocks and pebbles.

California grown olives make a variety of intensities of oil Tenth anniversary of Apollo Olive Oil

N

ot only are their oils high in quality, they are also organic — grown with sustainable, chemical-free agricultural practices, and milled without any chemical additives. They are members of Slow Food and Buy Fresh, Buy Local. They regularly give demos and tasting classes through out the Foothill and Sacramento areas at various gourmet grocery stores. Apollo Olive Oil achieves their high quality by using the only mill in the U.S. designed to mill olive oil under vacuum. This advanced milling technique guarantees protection from oxidation during the extraction of the oil, which allows them to achieve levels of antioxidants and polyphenols up to three or four times that in other extra virgin olive oils. All Apollo Olive Oils are 100% cold pressed and hand picked from trees grown in California. Apollo Olive Oil produces three kinds of olive oil. Mistal is the lightest intensity designed to be used with white wine dishes. The Sierra is medium intensity and designed to be used with red wine dishes. The Barouni is the strongest intensity and designed to be used with stronger red wine dishes. 2009 marks the tenth year since the first Apollo Olive Oil and they are proud to be a participating Back to Basics vendor at The Union’s Fall Home & Harvest Festival to demonstrate to the community the precision that goes into every bottle of olive oil they produce. Be sure to stop by the Apollo Olive Oil booth to learn how to taste olive oil throughout the weekend.

How to taste olive oil

Olive oil tasting, like wine tasting, can reach high levels of refinement. Most of us can learn to distinguish good oils from bad ones and to appreciate the positive attributes of olive oils. The more you taste attentively, the more your senses will sharpen and the more readily you will recognize the various qualities. Tasting glasses Professional glasses are small, round, stemless and blue. This design has two purposes. Firstly, the shape fits in the palm of your hand, so the oil warms and releases its aromas. Secondly, the dark glass hides the color of the oil, since this is never and indicator of quality and since we all have preferences and associations with colors, some producers manipulate the color to be more pleasing. For these reasons, it is better to simply avoid any personal biases by masking the color during a tasting. The tasting preparations Wait at least an hour or so after eating or drinking anything to be sure your palate is fresh and ready for new sensations. To set up the tasting, first smell each empty glass to be sure it doesn’t have any off-odors. Pour a little more than one tablespoon of oil into the glass. Smelling Hold the glass in the palm of one hand and cover it with the other. Wait until it is warm. Whirl it a bit, bring it very close to your nose and take a couple of sniffs. Pleasant aromas come from healthy, fresh olives and are what we call “fruit.” When learning to taste, avoid describing the aromas as you would do when tasting wine. The palate tires easily with an oil tasting, and it is better to just concentrate on asking: 1) Does this olive oil smell something of the vegetable world? 2) Is it a fresh, ripe smell? (not old, tired or odd.) 3) How intense is this perfume? Depending on the different smells in your line up of oils, you may want to rearrange them for tasting. Generally, you’ll want to put strong or odd odors at the end and gentle odors at the start, with the oils that have no odor at all somewhere in the middle. Tasting When sipping the oil, take a very small amount and draw in some air through the molars while holding the oil on your tongue. This will create an emulsion, a sort of mayonnaise, providing better contact with your taste buds by overcoming the natural conflict between oil and water (saliva). Hold the oil for a moment in the mouth and then swallow. You want to pay attention to two things: 1. Bitterness: Perceived primarily at the back of your tongue. This is a positive attribute. The goal is a pleasant bitterness (this is a kind of “oliveness”, and not a harsh, tannic bitterness). 2. Pungency: Felt in your throat as a little hot, pepperiness. Again, it can be very nice, either spicy or gentle, but not too aggressive. In this moment, the important question is: Is this oil harmonious, balanced? When the oil leaves your mouth, the taste sensation has to remain clean and free from unpleasant residues such as greasiness, soapiness, metallic flavors, rancidity, astringency and hard bitterness. Old olive oils and industrially produced oils tend to leave a greasy sensation as well as other off-flavors, most noticeable after you swallow, by slightly smacking your lips and letting air into your mouth. Between each oil, it’s a good idea to rest and clean your palate with water or a piece of neutral tasting bread (not sourdough, better a sweet baguette) or a piece of tart apple. Remember that when you try oil in this way, you are singling out, and concentrating on the characteristics, in order to understand the profile of the oil. Don’t worry if you cough a bit, sometimes oils are jokingly described as 1-cough, 2-cough, or 3-cough oils. Keep in mind that olive oil is meant to go with food and then, if well matched, it will be entirely enjoyable, as a whole condiment in itself or enhancing flavors.

Learn how to transform alpaca fleece into yarn Presented by A Star Alpacas & Opus Two Alpacas

Alpacas are fiber animals, shorn each year similar to shearing sheep. Kerry Anderson of A Star Alpacas and Joan Clappier of Opus Two Alpacas will be demonstrating basic steps to turn that alpaca fleece into finished products. • Carding the fiber. The two businesses will demonstrate with both hand carders and a drum carder how to align the fiber to get it ready for spinning or crafts. • Spinning the carded fiber into yarn. This will be demonstrated with both a peddle spinning wheel and a drop spindle, while discussing the steps on spinning and plying the yarn. Once the carded fiber has been transformed into yarn, the yarn can then be used for knitting, crocheting or weaving. • Weaving the yarn on a loom. The ladies will explain the fundamental principles of weaving and demonstrate with a 4-shaft table loom. An enormous variety of items can be woven on different types of looms, from bookmarks to rugs, scarves to decorator pillows. The demonstrations will utilize equipment made by Schacht, one of the top manufacturers of spinning wheels, looms and accessories. A Star Alpacas sells Schacht equipment and offers spinning and weaving classes. Opus Two Alpacas & A Star Alpacas are pleased to be joining the Fall Home & Harvest Festival’s Back to Basics this year, demonstrating weaving and spinning of Alpaca fleece on Saturday October 17 from 2 to 2:30 p.m. and Sunday October 18 from 12:30 to 1 p.m.

Star Alpacas: A Star Alpacas in Grass Valley has been in business 12 years.  In 1997, Bob and Kerry Anderson purchased three alpacas. This was the start of fulfilling their dream of working together in a business that allowed them to enjoy a rural lifestyle, interact daily with wonderful animals and enjoy the exciting world of fiber arts. The Andersons participate in several shows each year, including the Estes Park Wool Market and the Grass Valley Christmas show at the fairgrounds.  The Andersons have a studio at their ranch where they sell alpaca yarns and fiber that are hand dyed and hand painted by Kerry. They sell Schacht looms and spinning wheels and offer a variety of beginning weaving and spinning classes. The studio is open by appointment.  A Star Alpacas is pleased to be able to participate in the Fall Home & Harvest Festival’s “Back to Basics” with Opus Two Alpacas. Both ranches will be demonstrating “Transforming Alpaca Fleece into Products.” Weaving and spinning are some of the oldest crafts and arts known to man. A revival of these basic arts has occurred in the last few years. They are rewarding, fun and practical. You can join the fun too! Opus Two Alpacas: Opus Two Alpacas in Grass Valley represents both the animal and fiber sides of the alpaca industry. Owner Joan Clappier is fulfilling a life-long dream of working with animals. She is a Board member of both Nevada County Grown and the local Alpaca Gold Association, and helps put on the educational alpaca booth at the Nevada County fair each year. Alpacas are gentle, curious, intelligent animals and each has its own unique personality. They are good with children, easy to care for and gentle on the land. Opus Two sells both breeding stock and fiber/pet alpacas. Clappier offers an Introduction to Alpaca Ranching class each year for people who want to learn more about alpaca ownership, as well as other classes. Education, mentoring, and aftersales support are priorities at Opus Two Alpacas. Clappier got into the alpaca business because of her love of animals but she is now equally in love with the wonderful fiber produced by her alpacas. She sells fiber, rovings, yarn and hand-made products from her own alpaca fiber. Weaving has become a passion. Her ranch store is open by appointment and at ranch open houses and she sells at local events including the Country Christmas Faire.

Kirsten Cousins, owner of Wise Worm Farm agreed. “Teaching people techniques that will help them deepen their relationship with nature and the understanding of the cycles of life are an important part of what we do. benefits of worms castings and reveal the amazing alchemy of worms turning waste (kitchen, yard, manures, paper, cardboard etc) turned into black gold. Starting with a review of the materials from around your home that can be used in the composting process, Kirsten will bring her enthusiasm and eagerness on the subject to show that with the right balance of moisture, temperature, air, waste and bedding, the process of composting with worms at home is easy, fun and something that everyone can do. (Kids love it!) Similar to regular composting, composting with worms also uses kitchen and yard waste, however with worms, they eat all the waste, it goes through their bodies (a biological wonder) and they excrete a nutrient rich PH balanced fertilizer, worm castings. The end result is a living fertilizer filled with beneficial microbials. It also breaks down quicker than regular compost. Worm castings are a supreme amendment for anything that grows in your yard and forest. You will never have to purchase soil amendment again. Following Kirsten’s demonstration, Joel from J. Appleseed Food Garden Company is going to give a step by step demonstration of the methods you can use at home using your compost to create your own beneficial soil for your garden beds. Marney Blair from Nevada County’s Green Gold Program, will introduce you to a wide variety of different composting systems available from commercial products to ones you can create at home with very little or no cost and how to use them. Marney will also provide an example of what to expect to see at the various stages of composting and the wonderful soil end product you will have at the end of the composting cycle. From there, they will show you how to introduce your worm castings and traditional compost into J. Appleseed’s low cost take home raised garden bed kits which will be available at the show at discounted prices for show attendees. J. Appleseed will demonstrate the advantages of raised bed gardening as well as: • Show how to set up a raised bed • Give examples of how to pest proof your garden • Demonstrate the ways you can extend your gardening season with hoop houses and row covers • Explain how to use the different types of irrigation systems and there advantages and disadvantages for what you want to grow Come by the J. Appleseed Food Garden Companies and Wise Worm Farm booths at the Union Fall Home and Harvest Festival to view their products, which are sale priced just for this event and ask them any questions you may have or just to say hi. Make your own soap F

rontier Angel Soap, established by Diane Longacre in 2003 near her home town of Mountain View, California, came about through Diane’s interest in history, traditional hand crafts, and a preference for natural products. She began by supplying friends and family with handmade soap and what started as a hobby soon grew into a successful home based business. All the products at Frontier Angel are made by hand from proprietary formulas with a naturalas-can-be philosophy in mind. Diane prefers to use only vegetable based raw ingredients, while striving to use locally sourced ingredients in her products whenever possible. Frontier Angel soap can be found in various specialty stores throughout Nevada County and at local farmers markets during the summer months. Diane is a participating Back to Basics vendor at this year’s Fall Home & Harvest Festival, teaching you the step of making soap from your home. Stop by and listen to Diane’s demonstration on “Making Soap from Grocery Store Ingredients” on Saturday from 12:30 to 1 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 1:30 p.m. Soap 101 True bar soap is made by dissolving sodium hydroxide (also known as “lye”) in water then combining it with fats or oils. The chemical process that takes place is known as “saponification” Once the process of saponification is complete, the lye and oil molecules have combined and chemically changed into soap plus glycerin. There is no lye present in the finished bars of soap. Glycerine The Good Most of the cleansing bars sold commercially are not real soap any more, called “syndet bars” or synthetic detergent bars and are made from synthesized chemicals, fillers, petrochemicals, preservatives, synthetic dyes and artificial fragrances. Synthetic detergent bars have had their naturally occurring glycerine removed during a milling process. The soap company then sells their glycerine to another company who uses it as a beneficial additive to their products. Glycerine is not only beneficial in soap, but it’s also good in lotion and cream as well. Glycerine is a skin soothing emollient, a humectant that draws moisture to the skin and while eliminated from syndet bars, about 20 percent of naturally occurring glycerine is retained in handmade soap. Scent Sense Most, if not all, commercial detergent bars are artificially scented, even some handmade soaps contain artificial fragrances. Some soaps may seem to be naturally scented but really are not. For example, fragrances such as cucumber or strawberry, most fruits, and some flowers (lilac, honeysuckle, etc.) are not available naturally and are actually created in the lab by blending sometimes hundreds of aroma chemicals.

Rare flower essences such as jasmine are available, but exorbitantly expensive and it’s not cost effect for soap makers. Real handmade soap should be naturally scented with essential oils. Essential oils are distilled or pressed from the leaves and flowers of plants and can easily be identified on an ingredient label as “peppermint oil” or “lavender essential oil.” Animal, Vegetable or Mineral? When choosing your personal cleansing product, also consider whether you prefer vegetable based products or animal. Some commercial cleansing bars contain tallow — also known as sodium tallowate. Tallow is the fat from cows. While animal fat is cheap and easily accessible, some handmade soap makers, such as Frontier Angel Soap, prefer to go the all vegetable oil route, utilizing olive, palm and coconut oils. The synergy of different oils combine to create unique soap offerings. Some soap companies make their soap with added mineral oil, which is a transparent, colorless oil, related to white petrolatum, and is also a by-product in the distillation of petroleum to produce gasoline. While this doesn’t sound like anything one would choose to clean themselves with, it shows up as an ingredient in detergent bars, baby oil, lotions and creams manufactured by prominent personal care companies. Frontier Angel Soap can be contacted at P.O. Box 827, Grass Valley, CA 95945, (530) 274-3711 or www. frontierangel.com.

Making Soap from Grocery Store Ingredients Using simple vegetable-based ingredients available from any grocery store we will make 3 pounds of soap. Ingredients include: Crisco, olive oil, coconut oil, water and lye, molasses and baby oatmeal. Equipment needed: an empty clean ½ gallon milk carton for the mold, proper safety gear (eye protection, rubber gloves and an apron, these are essential.) and a scale to measure in grams. Plastic mixing containers (do not use for food storage afterward), a non-aluminum spoon for stirring, and a hand blender (not necessary, but recommended). This craft is NOT recommended for children. Soap samples, a basic soap formula, how-to instructions and a mail order source list will be available at each demo. Lye needs to be mail ordered as it is not available locally. SOAP RUMORS There is no such thing as 100% glycerin soap. It’s true, there is not one on the market today nor is there ever likely to be. Glycerin is a clear thick liquid, similar in texture to corn syrup. It is simply chemically impossible to make soap using glycerin alone or with glycerin as the main ingredient. In regards to biodiesel soap, it is not made with 100% food grade glycerin and it should never be used as a cleanser for the body due to trace quantities of methane, food particles and other undesirable waste products which remain in the glycerin by-product. This type of soap should be reserved for industrial use only.
