This News expired on 22 September 2008. Grand Final Here We Come MAGPIES SWOOP ON GRAND FINAL PLACE The Fremantle Magpies booked their place in the Wizard Home Loans Cup by beating YMCA Coastal City 2-1 at Perth Hockey Stadium on Sunday afternoon. It was YMCC that was on the front foot though as Fremantle defended deep, determined not to concede an early goal. YMCC controlled the tempo of the match, pressing in the midfield and building attacks down the right hand side, and constant pressure nearly told with twelve minutes played as the Fremantle defence was force to scramble clear after a save from an YMCC short corner. YMCC had another short corner saved just two minutes later as they ramped up the pressure as the umpires started to deal out the green cards, five in total for the half. Fremantle though, did manage to work its way back into the match but both teams struggled to create any clear cut chances up forward for the remainder of the half. YMCC managed to open its account before half time, with Mark Boyne lashing home a short corner in the last minute of the half to break black and white hearts. Fremantle came out with renewed purpose in the second half, attacking from the first whistle and was rewarded with just three minutes played as Patrick Ward dragged home a short corner to level things up. Matters weren’t helped for YMCC when it had Colin Begbie sent off just two minutes later, as Fremantle ramped up the pressure. Craig Davies slammed a short corner just wide with five minutes played as Ward continued to be a focal point up forward for the Magpies. Freo was controlling the tempo of the match as YMCC looked toothless up forward and the magpies took advantage of this by taking the lead with 17 minutes played. It was Cliff Bailey who scored the goal as the YMCC defence scrambled the ball away from a Fremantle short corner, only for the ball to fall into Bailey’s lap who smacked the ball home for a 2-1 lead. The goal spurred on YMCC which had a deflection go just over the bar with twelve minutes to go as YMCC pressed and Fremantle was happy to play on the counter. As the minutes flew by for YMCC and crawled for Fremantle, YMCC turned up the pressure, a short corner flying just wide with six minutes to go. As Fremantle packed its defence, YMCC just couldn’t find a way to goal and a diligent Fremantle ensured that it didn’t give away any short corners. As the final hooter sounded, a raucous Fremantle crowd celebrated as YMCC reflected on a disappointing finals series. Fremantle now face the Victoria Park Panthers in the Wizard Home Loans Cup, to be played at 3:15 PM Sunday at Perth Hockey Stadium.

James McGrath POWELL LEAVES WILLETTON FEELING BLUE Westside Wolves booked their place in the grand final of the Wizard Home Loans League by sneaking past Willetton 2-1 in extra time on Sunday afternoon. Wolves dominated early, Sian Smithson proving to be a nuisance to the Willetton defence as she and Elly Buckley combined well up forward. Smithson had a chance to put Wolves ahead when she bustled through the Willetton back line going past three defenders only to be thwarted by Willetton keeper Michelle Hinman with six minutes played. Willetton just couldn’t get it going up forward as some superb defensive play from Westside saw off any challenge Willetton could muster. Westside finally opened its account on 20 minutes when a cross found its way between keeper and defender for a diving Katrina Powell to put in. The goal seemed to spur Willetton on as they broke even in the mid field battle and Nicola Farrow looked lively while orchestrating Willetton attacks. Wolves though were unlucky not to double their lead on a couple of occasions leading up to half time, with Smithson unable to find the net after some great lead-up play in the last minute of the half. Willetton opened the second half in a vengeful mood, starting to take control of the game as defensive mistakes from the Wolves let Willetton put early pressure on. This pressure told after great midfield pressure from Harriet Collins lead to a succession of short corners. Willetton had a goal disallowed with seven minutes on the clock from one of these short corners after the ball was put in from a raised cross. The Willetton players and vocal supporters were already celebrating when the umpires deliberated and disallowed the goal. This fired up the Willetton players as they went in search of an equaliser, and only some great defensive work from Ollie Chiu stemmed the tide. Willetton weren’t to be denied though, as with fourteen minutes left Katy Symons smacked the ball home from a tight angle after choosing her moment to strike superbly. The goal shocked Wolves into action, and it wasn’t long before Smithson was amongst the play again. After failing to connect from a couple of crosses, Smithson cracked the ball agonisingly wide from a short corner with ten minutes to go. It was near yet so far for Wolves supporters as she went perilously close to connecting with a superb cross from the left four minutes later. As Willetton hung on for dear life, Wolves had a goal disallowed in the last minute of the game as a quickly taken free hit was deemed to have been taken too quickly for the umpire’s liking. To extra time, and Willetton had the best chance of the first period, Danica Mazzini just failing to connect with an inviting cross in the last minute of the first stanza. It was Powell who would break Willetton hearts, as she got the golden goal winner with a minute left on the clock in the second period, scoring with a deflection to take Wolves to

Finals excitement and great crowds despite the weather UWA REIGNS IN ‘08 UWA has taken the silverware this year, beating Westside Wolves 3-1 in the Grand Final of the Wizard Home Loans League.

Bulletin
Played at a chilly Perth Hockey Stadium, UWA came out all guns blazing and after just five minutes grabbed the first. Kelly Colgan smacked the ball low and hard from a short corner to send the large UWA contingent on the hill into raptures. Rapture turned into delirium five minutes later when UWA extended its lead with a superb individual effort from Jessica Shakes. After receiving a great pass from defence, she shook the close attention from her marker and rifled the ball into the roof of the net from just inside the circle. UWA didn’t have time to catch its breath though, as Sian Smithson pulled one back for Wolves when she was allowed time to pick her spot in the circle to make it 2-1. An absorbing contest followed, with both sides taking turns to wrest the momentum as a tough midfield battle ensued. As the half wore on though, it was the Wolves that were starting to control the tempo of the match, but they were unable to create any clear cut chances and were almost hurt going the other way when Caitlin Pascov had a shot saved after a good counter attack.

forward. The second half looked as if Wolves would tie it up, dominating from the outset but again they were unable to find a way to create clear cut chances. UWA managed to claw back some momentum, but Wolves ramped up the pressure, unlucky not to tie things up with fifteen minutes gone when an inviting cross went begging. Smithson almost added a second just three minutes later when she hit the side netting after a mazy run through the UWA defence put her in the clear. UWA almost had a third goal a minute later as Pascov just failed to connect on a teasing cross from the right, but UWA didn’t have to wait too long to wrap things up. They got the goal that made things safe with nine minutes to go after a scramble in the circle allowed Shakes to poke the ball home to send the leek-bearing UWA supporters into ecstasy. After the victorious UWA players belted out the team song with supporters, Shayni Nelson was pronounced the best on ground for the day and despite the loss, Wolves captain Jayde Taylor was full of praise for UWA. “It was a great game, we always look forward to playing them [UWA] because we know it’s going to be a tough one”. Victorious captain Kelly Colgan repaid the favour, while thanking retiring Kookaburra Bevan George for providing inspiration for the win. “We do love beating you girls [Westside], it’s become a bit of a Western Suburbs rivalry and we know it’s always going to be tough going against you”. PANTHERS ROAR IN FINAL The Victoria Park Panthers have taken the Wizard Home Loans Cup after a scintillating second half against Fremantle, eventually running out 1-0 winners. Things almost got off to a disastrous start for the Magpies when a scramble in the circle forced the ball off the keeper and off the upright, almost falling into the lap of a waiting Panthers attacker. Once things settled down, a tight and tough contest ensued as both sides worked hard in the engine room, but to no great avail. With ten minutes played though, Victoria Park was dealt a blow when Ian Burcher was sent off for a professional foul. Vic Park tried to hold onto the ball to minimise the damage, but almost gave away a goal six minutes later when a defensive lapse let in Patrick Ward, only for his reverse stick shot to be saved by the Panther’s custodian. After nineteen minutes played, Vic Park had a chance of its own with a delicious cross from the right just failing to be met after some great lead-up play from Tom Edwards.

Freo had a double chance to go ahead with eleven minutes to go when some frail defence from the Panthers gave Andrew Robertson a chance to shoot, only for his shot to rebound to Craig Davies who put his shot wide. Fremantle looked like it may go ahead in the final few minutes of the half, but a superb tackle from Edwards took the sting out of a quick Magpies counter attack. Attack was the message from the dugouts in the second half as both sides adopted a more free flowing approach, an audacious chip from Burcher being helped over the bar from Andrew Robertson after five minutes. Just a minute later, Vic Park had a glorious chance to go ahead, but Travis Taylor missed the target despite given time and space to contemplate his shot. It was the first of many missed opportunities for Vic Park, which went inches to going ahead on nine minutes when a cross-cum-shot from Jason Gabriel ricocheted off the keeper and trickled across the goal face. Five minutes later though, the Panthers had their goal when a cross from the right found an unmarked Brodie Sarre who was on hand to make it 1-0. The goal opened the game up as Fremantle worked hard to get back the goal, but were unable to create up forward thanks to some great pressure from the Vic Park midfield and some poor execution on the final ball. As Fremantle threw numbers forward, they left the back door open and the Panthers were quick to exploit this, working well on the counter attack going close on a number of occasions, Taylor blazing over the bar with eleven minutes to go. Try as Fremantle may, they couldn’t find a route to goal while it seemed only a matter of time until Victoria Park grabbed a goal on the counter. Fremantle never stopped trying though, and almost grabbed a dramatic equaliser with three minutes left on the clock when Paul Nicholls shot wide after some sustained pressure from the Fremantle forwards. It wasn’t to be though for the Magpies, and the Panthers grabbed the 1-0 win and the cup. Darren Parkes grabbed the Merv Adams medal for best on ground as Panthers captain Phil Hubert complimented Fremantle on a tough-fought match. “It was always going to be a tough encounter, my neck is telling me that right now” His opposite number in Darryl McCormick congratulated the Panthers on their win while finding pride in the way his team fought to stay in the match. “Hats off to you guys [Panthers], you deserved the win". James McGrath Many Thanks to James McGrath for his match reports each week and Hockey WA wishes
