 Program
description
 The
 Kearny
 Alliance
 Asia
 is
 offering
 two
 full
 scholarships
 for
 Myanmar
 students
 to
 study
journalism
at
Hong
Kong
Baptist
University
(HKBU)
in
Hong
Kong.
 The
scholarship
will
provide
full
tuition,
visas,
airfares,
living
expenses
and
housing
 for
students
in
the
following
course:
 
 Masters
of
International
Journalism
Studies
 
 Programs
 in
 the
 School
 of
 Communication
 at
 HKBU
 aim
 to
 prepare
 students
 for
 a
 career
in
media
and
communication.
Students
have
the
choice
to
either
concentrate
 in
international
journalism
or
business
and
financial
journalism.



 The
Communication
programme
is
designed
to
develop
each
student's
potential
for
 critical
 thinking
 and
 creative
 ability,
 in
 accordance
 with
 the
 University's
 overall
 philosophy
 of
 "whole
 person"
 education.
 Objectives
 specific
 to
 the
 Communication
 course
are:
 1. To
 provide
 students
 with
 a
 systematic
 analysis
 of
 communication
 and
 media
in
contemporary
society,
with
a
primary
focus
on
China,
including
 Hong
Kong;
 2. To
educate
competent
communication
professionals
to
meet
the
needs
of
a
 community
 undergoing
 rapid
 socio‐political
 and
 technological
 changes;
 and
 3. To
 help
 students
 to
 cultivate
 a
 proper
 sense
 of
 social
 consciousness
 and
 ethical
 responsibility
 as
 they
 prepare
 for
 careers
 in
 professions
 which
 have
a
profound
impact
for
good
or
ill
upon
the
contemporary
world.

 Eligibility

 Applicants
wishing
to
apply
for
the
Masters
of
International
Journalism
should:
 (a) hold
a
Bachelor's
Degree;
AND
 (b) be
 able
 to
 communicate
 in
 English
 at
 an
 advanced
 level,
 possessing
 one
 or
 more
of
the
following
qualifications:
 (i) A
 minimum
 score
 of
 580
 (paper‐based)
 or
 237
 (computer‐based)
 or
 92
 (internet‐based)
in
TOEFL,
or
 (ii) A
 score
 of
 6.5
 or
 above
 in
 the
 International
 English
 Language
 Testing
 System
(IELTS),
or
 (iii)

A
qualification
judged
equivalent
by
the
Department
of
Journalism.



 All
applicants
must
be
committed
to
returning
to
Myanmar
for
a
minimum
period
of
 three
years
to
undertake
work
related
to
media
after
graduation.

 
 Application
instructions
 To
 apply
 complete
 the
 attached
 application
 form
 together
 with
 the
 following
 documents:
 (a) One
 copy
 of
 all
 your
 academic
 transcripts.
 You
 will
 be
 required
 to
 produce
 original
 transcripts
 at
 a
 later
 date
 but
 please
 only
 send
 copies
 with
 your
 application;
 (b) Two
completed
HKBU
reference
forms
which
should
be
sent
to
us
directly
by
 your
referee.
Your
referees
should
know
you
well
and
one
should
have
been
 your
teacher.

 (c) A
 500‐word
 self‐statement
 in
 English
 outlining
 your
 academic
 interests
 and
 objectives,
 and
 a
 sample
 of
 a
 piece
 of
 journalism
 and/or
 research
 paper
 if
 available,
 Where
 possible,
 short‐listed
 applicants
 will
 be
 interviewed
 by
 a
 faculty
 panel.
 The
 interview
serves
as
a
cross‐validation
of
the
evidence
given
in
the
above
documents
 and
helps
to
ascertain
an
applicant's
commitment
to
postgraduate
studies.
 The
Course
Director
may,
with
endorsement
of
the
Course
Management
Committee
 and
 the
 Academic
 Registrar,
 waive
 any
 of
 these
 requirements
 for
 applicants
 with
 unique
 qualifications
 that
 warrant
 special
 consideration
 as
 evidenced
 in
 an
 applicant's
outstanding
professional
practice
or
publication
record.
