Stories of the City WEBSTER STATION AS THE 21ST CENTURY URBAN PROTOYPE It began quietly and without fanfare. A few, long-standing stalwart businesspeople along with the caretakers of historic church congregations kept the heart beating. Names such as Requarth, Mendelson, Woessner, Lorenz, Miami-Jacobs, St. John’s and St. Joseph, and others anchored what had become somewhat of an urban wasteland – neglected but not forgotten.

Along came a few impassioned, visionary baby boomers and Xr’s and the heart began to beat stronger. The Cannery was followed by FifthThird Field, then the Firefly and Riverscape, the Second Street Market, Brixx, Real Art - all brought together and celebrated by self-proclaimed Mayor Charlie Campbell – the Webster Station march to vibrancy was well on its way.

The list continues to grow and Webster Station today seems more like a small town with an around-the-clock future. Beginning a new chapter in this story, weaving the past with the future – rehabilitation and new construction - jobs, amenities, housing, festivals, night-life, a green neighborhood, growing with the Oregon District – what a great model for 21st Century Downtown.
