1939 ● Germany invades Poland: World War II begins

1940 ● Hitler invades Norway, Denmark ( April 9 ), the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg ( May 10) and France ( May 12) ● The first official network television broadcast is put out by NBC.

1941 ●

Japanese surprise attack on Us fleet at Pearl Harbor brings US into World War II; US and Britain declare war on Japan.

1944 ● D-Day. ( June 6 ) ● Bretton Woods Conference creates International Monetary Fund and World Bank ( July 1-22 )

1945 ● Hitler commits suicide ( April 30 ) ●Germany surrenders ( May 7 ) ● May 8 is declared V-E Day

• US drops atomic bombs on Japanese cities of Hiroshima ( Aug 6 ) and Nagasaki ( Aug 9) • United Nations established ( Oct 24 ) • First electronic computer built.

1947 • Britain gives in to the demands; India and Pakistan gain independence.

1953 • Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay of Nepal reach top of Mt. Everest ( May 29 ) •Neil Armstrong lands on Moon

1979 • Revolutionary forces under Ayatollah Khomeini take over ( Feb 1 ) • Iranian militants seize US embassy in Tehran and hold hostages ( Nov 4 ) • Soviet invasion of Afghanistan stirs world protests ( Dec 27 )
